Forum Post: One demand: America Conservation Corps

I suggest one simple, realistic, and positive-minded demand that can stand for the best ideals of this country and this movement:

'America Conservation Corps', a year of service for all American youth after high school, a draft for nation-building at home, and a fight against youth unemployment and undereducation.

This would build on the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s, and the more recent AmeriCorps program, by developing a universal American experience of service in "conservation" of both America's great natural and human resources.

By uniting behind this one program as an expression of American community and brotherhood and sisterhood, we can stand as a positive counterpoint to corporate greed and the abuses of laissez faire, and work fundamentally toward uniting rather than dividing our people.

In broad terms, I assert that modern society, acting through its government, owes the definite obligation to prevent the starvation or dire want of any of its fellow men and women who try to maintain themselves, but cannot. ~ FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT

America and the world really needs this program! Many young men and women here lead lives of quiet desperation. No program exists today that will provide them with the needed supervision and guidance to be accountable for their actions and become responsible citizens and stewards of their lands and waters. We now also have to have our future generations repair our mess or perhaps perish. Check out a site that calls to bring this program back at www.wecantakeit.org.

I strongly agree "What our vision has to be most of all is something positive; and so much more than just an expression of understandable anger".

What our vision has to be most of all is something positive; and so much more than just an expression of understandable anger.

That is why I think we need a specific program built on the strength of the national youth and communities which we represent, rather than focus on retribution for past wrongs (as serious as the injustices of recent years have indeed been).

A mirror-image of Tea Party bile will not serve our cause, we need something radically different!

Good idea, great program of the New Deal type. But first the Corporate Aristocracy needs to be occupied and disassembled, its historic crimes revealed. Then there will be time and cash for all demands to be reviewed and a New New Deal structured.

And, in exchange for the work, Education for All! That is a nice start, but don't forget a stipend of spending money for the workers, single payer health care, tax the rich, end the fed... and on, and on... The purpose of one primary demand is to give us breathing room to explain it to the distracted masses. We should have no intention of giving corporate and government criminals any rest until our long lists of demands are met and their crimes are accounted for.
