Forum Post: Drones under 4.4 pounds were just given green light to fly in United States

This content is user submitted and not an official statement

New York Times article anout drones under 4.4 pounds now being permitted to fly in U.S. http://nyti.ms/AbU2Pv . Drone sales are expected to skyrocket.

I'm more of a Huxley fan myself. Orwell said this was done to us. Huxley said we would do it to ourselves by not putting up a resistance even though we had the power to do so and win. I think Aldous Huxley was totally right. I am also partial to him because of his masterpiece, "The Perennial Philosophy".

Target Practice......

May be misconstrued as a bird.

Shoot first?

[-] 3 points by Gillian (1842) 12 years ago

These drones ( some of them anyway) also have the ability to see inside your home, car and business and through your clothing. And to think that there are still some Americans fearful that we might become socialist and believe that this is what democratic societies do in the name of national security. Scary is what it is. 9-11 has been used to justify so many un-American policies.

[-] 1 points by Breadwinner (33) 12 years ago

Wow, I have been working with and around drones for years and I haven't seen the ones you speak of. What technology are you talking about?

[-] 1 points by Gillian (1842) 12 years ago

I don't know anything about them except that some may contain the same technology as the airports in order to detect weapons that someone may be carrying or storing in their homes. Apparently, here in VA, the police are already scanning every single license plate that passes by them on the roads and then storing that info in a data base. I'm not suggesting that this is the same technology that a drone would use but my point being that there seems to be a recent surge toward ' invasion' with no personal boundaries which I find it disturbing. maybe it's an attempt to replace soldiers and HLS with robots?

[-] 1 points by ZenWhoreDog (5) 12 years ago

I view this as just another reason for a serious discussion about privacy. If someone walked onto your property with the camera rolling, you could ask them off in the name of tresspassing.

Indeed. I've written my Congressman and will commence target shootiing in the Spring.

See though your clothing? What do they have X-ray vision? I'm sorry sir but that bit is Science Fiction, which makes me question the validity of your statement.

[-] 1 points by Gillian (1842) 12 years ago

Saw it on the news dear. Apparently many are quite upset about this.

[-] 1 points by Bullmooseparty (21) from West Orange, NJ 12 years ago

They can you thermal vision but they cannot see through your cloths.

[-] 1 points by Gillian (1842) 12 years ago

Not sure about that. I remember when the airport imaging was showing naked bodies and people freaked out so they were forced to change the type of imaging they used. I guess that means that IF they want to see you naked, they can do that. I wish they come see me because I can assure you that once they did, they would never return :D

[-] 1 points by Bullmooseparty (21) from West Orange, NJ 12 years ago

You have to understand those machines are massive. You can't put that technology on a 5 pound drone.

[-] 1 points by Gillian (1842) 12 years ago

I'm sure the technology comes in all sizes.

[-] 1 points by Bullmooseparty (21) from West Orange, NJ 12 years ago

No it does not.

[-] 3 points by richardkentgates (3269) 12 years ago

The law permits the use of those vehicles by a lot more than just military and law enforcement. There is actually an entirely new industry that has been on hold for 20 years, waiting on this green light. You will be amazed at how this changes society in more ways than you are concerned with at the moment.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Jeez. What exactly are you picturing?

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

I'd prefer no drones at all but if the police and other authorities are going to have them then we should definitely gear up.

When will Obama give the order to kill like he has in 6 other countries?

[-] 0 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

I suppose as the President, Obama is only doing what any other President would do to watch out for the welfare of the United States of America, Inc.

After all didn't Abraham Lincoln state: "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. . . . [¶] I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free.

Therefore, everyone must understand, Obama, like any other President, is doing what he is paid to do, no more, no less!!! We put these people on pedestals and expect them to do more than what they are supposed to...It is all fixed!!!

[-] 1 points by SteveKJR (-497) 12 years ago

Well then why are gasoline prices going up through the roof? I am sure he is doing his best to stop oil in this country from leaving the shores to be sent abroad.

I am sure he has a plan but it isn't a plan to help the people out in this country.

[-] 1 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

I doubt it...after all there is oil to be had right on these shores. There is a bigger problem here and it isn't about the oil.. All diversions lead to one thing...keep the people asleep.

[-] -2 points by SteveKJR (-497) 12 years ago

There was a report on cnn or one of the other liberal news media channels talking about why prices are high. We are using less and the companies here in the united states are exporting more to keep the prices up here.

The Obama Administration could do something about that but they won't. He made mention several years ago that he wanted to see gasoline prices reach $5.00 a gallon.

His reason for this was to push "alternative energy" and with low energy prices these companies can't compete without some sort of financial assistance from the government.

We don't need to be providing financial assistance to any company. What we need to do is build up our own oil resources to get prices back down.

Then we can focus on building nuclear plants to preapare for the massive use of electricity that will happen when all these "enviornmental friendly electric vehicles" get their act together and start mass producing them.

But you must remember everything you touch is made from oil so it will be impossible to completely stop using it.

[-] 2 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

Yeh, yeh, and President Andrew Jackson still believed the world was flat!! CNN, NBC, FOX, ETC. ETC.....perhaps everything you touch is made from oil, but I don't believe the hype or the BS. When are you people going to start thinking for yourselves??? We don't need oil, we don't need coal. You all are just afraid to create a way for yourself in life and like pointing the finger and putting the blame on the very ones you depend on for YOUR DIAPERS!!! You talk about how great this country was from the beginning with the ideas of your founding fathers, and now you are afraid of your own shadow from the advancement of those alleged ideas!! Make up your minds!!!

[-] -1 points by SteveKJR (-497) 12 years ago

So tell me - if we don't need oil and coil, what do we need? Tell me how you can heat a house in upstate New York with a chill factor of -13 degrees with solar panels? It isn't going to happen.

Tell me how you are going to make I-pod phones out of materials made of "non oil" products. Tell me for that matter how you can smelt steel without fossle fuel being used? Maybe an "electric heater" will work - yah, right.

You are living in a "dream world". Maybe it's time you travel across this great country of ours to really find out what it's all about.

[-] 1 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

Exactly, so what in the hell do you think will happen when all that shyt fails? oh, and believe you me...it will. You all are just ignoring the handwriting on the wall and think the news media is telling you EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!!!
So, what did New Yorkers do when the power grid went out?? Panic, suffer and die, or adapt and make it the best way they could?
You better think people...if you think all this is going to remain the same as it ever was....then surely you should go sit in a corner and put your dunce caps on and suck your thumbs. You know what....most of America is living in some kind of shangri-la plastic bubble anyway...So those who can survive will...and those who can't won't. It ain't my call....better keep an eye on the skies son!!!

[-] -1 points by SteveKJR (-497) 12 years ago

You still didn't address my questions - you can whine all you want but until you have an alternative - which by the way you don't - deal with it.

[-] 2 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

Yes, I did....you just fail to grasp reality...If you were stranded on a dessert island how would you survive. If you don't believe it can take place, then obviously you are still reading Harry Potter and cannot deal with what is taking place within your own country. Do you know how many people wake up in tents in the woods, with no heat, no fuel, no reason to believe their lot will be any better in this country? Do you know how many people do not own Ipods, Computers, Houses, Cars, or even have a place to wash their damn drawers? What the hell is wrong with you? Have you gotten so wrapped up in your silicone valley life style that you forget that there is a reality out here where people don't have food or a damn thing to call their own? There are people who are homeless and hungry and still surviving,, and all you can think about is some damn IPOD??? Corporate America and people like you keep your own BS illusions alive, while others suffer and die. For goodness sake...Get lost..oh...never mind...you already are!!!

[-] -1 points by SteveKJR (-497) 12 years ago

Well let me say this about that. Over my entire lifetime I have never been without a job. I lived in tents, campers, and a lot of other places but have never been without work.

Why, because I was brought up being taught to survive. Todays society especially the X-Y and mellineum generation don't know how to.

If I needed a job tomorrow I would find one - and if I had more bills then income I would change that also.

I am not afraid like most people to give everything up if I have to. I know I can survive.

And one more thing, I have always improved my income over the years by improving my "job skills" and as a result I have never been without a job.

Lots of people who whine today are satisfied working 15 or 20 years at 40 hour week job that they felt secure in. Well, nobody is secure when it comes to jobs or for that matter even owning your own business.

So don't preach to me about people living in tents without water or being able to wash their damm drawers. I've been there done that and am a survivor because of it.

[-] 1 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

Yeh, yeh...save your speech for your next political campaign..It falls on deaf ears because you are only living up to your own imaginary self righteous image and you are helping no one in reality... And perhaps if you received a little more preaching, you would come down off that pedestal you have placed yourself on and realize you owe whatever it is you have achieved to society and could not have done so otherwise...grow up!!!

[-] 1 points by SteveKJR (-497) 12 years ago

I have contributed to society greatly.

You see, I can boast and preach that, becasue I help build America. working on construction jobs. So I have contributed to the well being of America just as the rest of those other construction workers out there have.

[-] 0 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

Well good for you buckaroo......now....go eat your snack, pat yourself on the back and say....hooray!!! Shee.e.e.e.e.esh!!!

[-] 1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

Or we just want them to do what we voted them into office for.

either way....

pssshhh

[-] 1 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

That is the point...if we the people actually believe they are doing what we want them to then we are in a fool's paradise. Not everyone agrees on what needs to be done...now do they? Remember...GOP is the good ole boys and each group has its own special interest and most often these groups could care less about what the people want....it is all about "preserving the UNION" and getting theirs, i.e. capitalism!!

[-] 0 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

Lets not confuse an economic system that allows many to reach their potential to a few that abuse the government by an apathetic public.

[-] 1 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

That does not make any sense whatsoever. If the public is apathetic then how are many reaching their potential? Then who is the public and who is reaching their potential? Perhaps you meant to say apathetic Republic!

[-] 1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

Im saying that many are reaching their potentials. But the majority, including some of the succeeding, are allowing the 1% to destroy the system.

[-] 1 points by Neuwurldodr (744) 12 years ago

Ah.....the system...pray tell what is the system...what we have here is a group of people who were left to run the country as they saw fit and the public thought they were doing it for them.. There is nothing wrong with the system. per se, it is the fact that the people who utilize it, utilize it knowingly and wantonly and selfishly!!

[-] 1 points by alexrai (851) 12 years ago

Good point.

How can people not be pissed off about this kind of stuff? I mean odds are slim that you'll catch any discussion on the MSM, even for those who bother to flip past the Jerry Springer reruns... but argh, how far does it actually have to go before more people start complaining?

Is it going to take random unannounced home searching? Installing a video camera in your bedroom? Planting a barcode on your neck? And then there is the part of me that still thinks some people would just thank God for freedom and tell them to go right ahead.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

I actually think there is a line and there's an innate human instinct that is awakened when things go too far. You see it in the tea party although they of course see government as the enemy rather than their best defense (properly administrated) against the corporatists. The have the fire in the belly but it was appropriated by highly evolved corporate folks like Dick Army and his corporate finders.

The occupy movement is obviously more on the mark and is for the most part aiming in the right direction.

My main point is that that human spirit will awaken. It's just a matter of how and when. We who have woken up to the truth of what's going on can help shape the how and when if we're vigilant, patient and innovative. Think about how Gandhi and King provoked and always happened to have the press right there....

[-] 1 points by alexrai (851) 12 years ago

Well I really hope you're right, cause it looks like its going to be the year we get to find out. :)

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Yes. This is our moment. These 3 or 4 items coming up could be pretty big: http://occupywallst.org/forum/how-the-occupy-movement-can-grow-to-100-times-its-/

[-] 1 points by leandros (12) 12 years ago

Huxley & Orwell are both right on that one.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

I think you're probably right.

[-] 1 points by JanitorInaDrum (134) 12 years ago

Well the short range shotgun tasers can certainly be deployed from these drones.

[-] 1 points by TruthRightsFreedom (259) 12 years ago

Probably not. The power source for the electrical shock is at the end of a wire, that source would be on the drone.

[-] 1 points by nomdeguerre (1775) from Brooklyn, NY 12 years ago

I've sometimes wondered if Orwell was writing a roadmap for them, not a warning for us.

[-] 1 points by DanielBarton (1345) 12 years ago

i dont think it will be used like that i think it is for people like me who just want to build them like like model planes and gather useless data. It also can be used for movies farmers and man others.

i say this is a good thing i just hope that my plane is under 4.4lb thats gonna be tough

[-] 1 points by TruthRightsFreedom (259) 12 years ago

Digesting this gave me cognitive flatulence

You think the plane is for people like you because you JUST want to build them like models.

AND, that the planes you want to build are for gathering "useless data".

But, you think it is a "good thing", and are worried yours is not going to be under 4.4lbs.

Would'nt you rather the government feed some starving Americans with those $ or help with health care instead?

[-] 1 points by DanielBarton (1345) 12 years ago

no i think many different types of people will use them. But i agree it is silly to waste money on laws about this because its just models and they have cameras on them. When i was 10 i built a rocket that would take pictures when it reached a certain height it wasn't bad it wasn't for any evil purposes it was because it was fun.

and yes if it has to be under 4.4 lbs i may have to redesign my machine.

Me building a model plane/helicopter has nothing to do with the government from feeding the poor. If it does its the fact that they shouldn't worry about it. If anything regulate it so we can fly within in certain distance of a airport or something but really no need for regulation on this

Anyone can take pictures or video of you if they are in a place that is legal for them to be there. This includes "airspace". There is no presumption of privacy in public.

[-] 2 points by rayolite (461) 12 years ago

Does your acceptance of this include taxpayers financing such operations?

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 12 years ago

In Florida it's a felony to take a picture of a farm, even while standing on public space, such as a road or sidewalk.

This was done mostly to "protect", certain large factory type farms.

So yes, some corporate people DO get to presume privacy in a public space.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

That will soon change. Stay tuned.

[-] 1 points by Skippy2 (485) 12 years ago

how? there are several Supreme Court cases upholding it.

Cops have been using RC helicopters and planes for years.

[-] 2 points by rayolite (461) 12 years ago

Not for general surveillance. With a court order only or a known threat to life.
