Forum Post: Occupy Wall Street Gets More Violent

The true colors of the Occupy Wall Street movement are starting to shine through, both in actions and affiliations. The picture that is developing is one of increasing violence married with extremist affiliations that is anything but representative of the 99 percent of Americans the movement claims to stand for.

Occupy is not using it's greatest weapon. Withholding their dollars from the same corporations they claim to be at war with and instead support the enemy by buying their goods and services.

I've got about $1.50 in my pocket. Who should I boycott?

I just dented their bottom line by about twenty cents! That'll show 'em!

Seriously though, while it'd be great if everyone boycotted every company that did bad things, it isn't going to happen. People have to live. It becomes a form of lifestyle activism that in nearly all cases they simply can't afford and don't have time for. Combine that with the existing resources of said companies, and their investment in preserving this status quo, and it's obvious depending on one friendly tactic won't get you far.

For me, I may never have enough financial wealth to wave in their face pretending that I'd only buy xyz if the company became more benevolent. I may never have a government willing to serve its people. But what I do (at least in theory) own and control, though it isn't much, is my voice, my mind, and my body. You'll find each of these blockading those pursuing and committing exploitation against my fellow workers, our earth, and capitalizing on the needs of life.

Because we yet have no real control. Boycott. Strike. Occupy.

You are absolutely right that there are some things that you simply cannot boycott without making your life miserable. For example, I would love to say "fuck you" to the oil companies, but I can't until I get the money to buy an electric car. I can't protest against my utility company for raising rates AGAIN, because I have no alternative. Its either pay the bills or go without AC this summer.

There are things that you can do, depending on your particular situation. For example, I have stepped foot in Wal*Mart a total of 2 times this year to spend gift cards that I got for Christmas. I don't shop there at all otherwise. In protest of the EA working conditions issue I haven't bought any of their games, choosing to spend my consumer money elsewhere. I have my money stored in a credit union instead of a "too big to fail" bank like Bank of America. I prefer to eat at places that have free-range chicken and organic foods (like Jason's Deli) over the processed stuff. Heck, I've been slowing phasing meat (especially beef) out of my diet because after reading texts like Fast Food Nation, I got tired of contributing to the horrors that those meat processing workers endure.

Just think about what your dollars are funding when you buy your products, and see if there are alternatives that are better for society as a whole.

There are a lot of criminals showing up in financial institutions. Affiliated with international criminals and money keeps coming up missing from failed firms. Guess we should be shutting them down too.

Doesn't matter, violent small groups are bound to form as frustration increases and few changes are made. There is no intention to develop political power so it doesn't matter what anyone thinks of Occupy.

99% of Americans aren't pacifists, violence being right and wrong depends on personal philosophy

Someone should be policing the violence but no one is
