This needs to happen eventually. You will need to occupy congress. Call it the Occupant Party. Set up a web site that allows registered occupants to direct the Occupant Party candidates, and hold them accountable once in office. Perhaps the Occupant can post upcoming conressional votes to OWS and it's members can vote, the representative can then cast his/her congressional ballot accordingly. This ensures the people have a persistant voice in congress, not just a representative. Just food for thought. At some point the legislative process needs to change. Eventually this movement must evolve and grow. You can't steer a car by shouting at it and sitting in the road. You've got to take the wheel.

I agree. We have to form a new government, and then kick them all out. They won't step down without a fight. Count on it. We have to elect our own Congress, President and get rid of life-time judge appointments. (SCOTUS). As I understand it as a lay person, Constitutional law provides for this possibility. That is the only way to get them out through non-violence.

Great idea.. I agree.

The worst thing we can do is delude ourselves into thinking we can overthrow the government and start over; that's great rhetoric but it's not reality ... we are not Egypt, we have a democracy, it just needs to be fixed! The valuable efforts of OWS will be lost, and support eroded if we espouse anarchy. Our efforts should be focused on cleaning up the political mess we have and fixing it so it works. Direct Democracy (everyone voting on everything) is great for small groups, but is not reasonable for governing millions of Americans. Where we need direct Democracy is in choosing our leaders and holding them accountable, without MONEY controlling their actions. Eliminate the Electoral College; Presidents should be elected by popular vote! Shorten the House and Senate terms and limit how many terms can be served. Make lobbying by any For-Profit organization illegal and prosecute politicians that accept favors from Big Money interests. Also prosecute politicians that use their positions to enrich themselves. Make the media accountable for the information they distribute; everything must be truly factual. And most importantly, assure that our Constitution defines "the People" as human citizens and does not include Corporations. We don't beat the Wall Street Barons until we make permanent changes in how our Democracy works, not try to start over from scratch ... that's nuts!!

You are absolutely right!! Because time is of the essence, we first have to run off the most corrupt current members of Congress as soon as possible; many in 2012. Start with the Republicans who boast of their allegiance to the 1%, and then the Democrats who espouse support for the 99%, but take money from corporations and Big Money interests to influence their votes. Simultaneously develop a new Party that is based on OWS principals and focus on capturing legislative seats in Congress and throughout the States; as many as possible, and keep pushing for more. Also actively support an Amendment to establish that Corporations, and other legal entities are not people, and do not have the same Constitutional rights as human citizens. These things can be accomplished through the OWS movement, but emphasis must be on establishing the OWS principals as a permanent basis for the governing of our nation.

We need direct democracy to bypass the politicians, the banks and Wall Street. "When the government fears the people there is liberty. When the people fear the government there is tyranny."

The National Initiative empowers us to check and balance representatives, similar to ballot initiatives in 24 States, but at all levels from local to national and with major improvements. It gives us a "Plan B" whenever representatives don't represent us. Torture, perpetual wars and debt, domestic spying and bailouts for the rich do not represent us. People tried to get this power from Congress, both in 1907 and 1977, with no success. Rather than beg the existing 13 Legislatures to ratify the Constitution, the Founders had delegates of The People ratify the Constitution at the Constitutional Conventions. James Madison said "The people were in fact, the fountain of all power, and by resorting to them, all difficulties were got over." Please spread the word: http://vote.org/

What we need to do is oust all our current politicians, Quash all laws passed after the original bill of rights that do not honor the constitution and build a code of laws that is more suitable to handle the world we live in today. For those of you that don’t know we live in a Republic and always have. We do not live in a democracy and never have. The difference. is a Republic is governed by rule of law and a democracy is governed by Majority rule. A Republic is better because, it basically is a country without personal law. What that means is there are no laws telling you what you can and can not do there is only a bill of rights witch is basically a list of things the government can not do. Like the First amendment Free speech. What that means is the government cannot tell you not to express your opinion. Unfortunately they have passed many laws prohibiting free speech in certain areas over the years. The business community has hijacked our constitution and reshaped it so it only benefits them. The founding fathers would be disappointed. Silly laws like business licenses and permits are a strict violation of our right to work and do business and live the way we choose. The have taken our independent living standard away from us and forced us to live the way they want. Please watch this very well put together documentary on our founding fathers. It explains the vision the founders had for our country and you will see how it is nothing like what we have today http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_boAGNPmNQ&list=LL6euVIYI9kllZfwTYZsAj7w&index=9&feature=plpp_video

You people have so many "causes" and "ideals"......you are not organized and te best you cam come up with is a blog with forums as a way to "change a nation"?????????? Ou people are sad.....if you want to accomplish ANYTHING you would be wise to get more organized, elect a leader, and have some goddamn sense about how you go about business.

Isnt that an angrier, less constructive, version of what I said? Minus the insults of course.

E pluribus unum

[-] 1 points by OWSisawaste (133) 12 years ago

what do you mean....."out of many, one"......what do you mean with that?

[-] 1 points by Occupant22 (8) 12 years ago

This isn't "your" country. There are many of us that make up this nation. And in this nation majority rules. This is what OWS is really about. Only 1%rule. If you think your representatives care about you you are fooling yourself. Gradualy things will get worse, but theyll tell you to be greatful, and youll listen. Do you remember how much more freedom you had 10 / 20 years ago? Its the slow motion by which our government moves yhat tricks us into thinking things havent changed.

The fact that you think your gov is trying to brainwash you are turn this country into a mindless zombie is really moronic. I have seen this nation change, not necessarily for the better, but it is certainly not trying to brainwash its citizens..... and what are YOU planning on doing about it anyway???????

[-] 1 points by Occupant22 (8) 12 years ago

I never said brainwashing. You should calm down. Plus, this post is a discussion about the possibilty of representation. I think ill stop addressing you now. You seem unappeasedly angry.
