Probably not gone, but I'm willing to bet that once universal coverage kicks in they will start to drop precipitously (which as far as I'm concerned is a great thing) because so many more people will be able to prevent unwanted pregnancies rather than having to terminate them partway through. I doubt abortions will ever stop 100% because situations involving the health of the mother, rape/incest, and the health of the fetus will continue to exist (and there exists the definite possibility that one or both partners won't be in a position to access birth control because of the personal beliefs of their family or community), but the number of abortions performed outside of those circumstances should take a big hit.

Thanks ARod, now I don't have to say anything here:)

[-] 2 points by ARod1993 (2420) 12 years ago

No problem!

Why don't we teach abstinence? Why don't we teach delaying gratification? Why don't we teach our children how to more responsibly use their body? Why don't we teach our children that there are more important things in this world than sex?

Keep in mind this is a liberal from Taxachusetts whose gonna vote for Elizabeth Warren saying this. Besides, it's true that the only 100% effective birth control is abstinence, so abortions wouldn't become extinct.

Sounds like another off message topic brought to you by another paid for troll.IT is the BANKS

[-] 1 points by ThunderclapNewman (1083) from Nanty Glo, PA 12 years ago

Please explain how birth control is absolutely free (of charge?)

[-] 1 points by over9000 (20) 12 years ago

And you know what? I think even the craziest conservatives will be okay with that.

[-] 1 points by invient (360) 12 years ago

Depends, birth control pills stop the production eggs, increase mucous which blocks sperm, and or stops a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus wall...

If the birth control pill results in a high percent of the last option, and you believe life begins at conception.... then abortions will skyrocket...

[-] 1 points by gestopomillyy (1695) 12 years ago

the law doesnt take effect until 2014

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

I am sure you will be disappointed, but there still isn't universal coverage. Many millions still have no healthcare. But the number of abortions should start dropping.

Currently, 40% of all pregnancies are unwanted. Zero is a good goal.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

Very good goal, thanks. Who the devil wants to be an unwanted child? I was one, and so I know:)

[-] 0 points by aflockofdoofi (-18) 12 years ago

What if the rate doesnt drop?

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

It will conclusively show that the abortions that have been being counted are not real abortions in fact they are fake abortions. Some women psychologically abused by their puritanical fathers who believe their fathers don't love them and want them to fail. Abortion is the most profound failure that they can conceive of, their guilt and wanting to receive love from him in exchange for validation, have been staging fake abortions for his approval.

Doctors have been aiding them in this deception, recognizing it does not harm the woman since it is a fake and it gives her some psychological cover.

Only doctors know how high the percentage of the reported abortions are actually faked abortions. The percentage is presumed to be high.

Until these "conservative" fathers dial down the pressure on these young women, number of fake abortions may continue to remaim a large fraction of the total reported.

[-] 1 points by PretendHitGirI (13) 12 years ago

sorry republican fathers do this shit to their little girls and then act all 'no abortion' like and all 'it's not your choice' like

scumbags

OWS officially denounces all Republicans and hereby pledges all it's support to the Democrats.

DONKEY POWER!

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

Yeah, Olympia Snow?

[-] 1 points by PretendHitGirI (13) 12 years ago

I lost my virginity to her.

We'll she was on CSpan when it happened.

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

Good for you.

[-] 1 points by PretendHitGirI (13) 12 years ago

Scan me.....

[-] -1 points by PretendHitGirI (13) 12 years ago

Well don't you think honest counseling and assistance with sterilization would be effective?

I don't think I'll contribute if that option is irrationally removed from the table.

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

I believe that various forms of contraception including sterilization are offered.

You aren't going to start up with mandatory transvaginal scans are you? Why "irrational"?

[-] 0 points by PretendHitGirI (13) 12 years ago

Are you offering me one of those scans?

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

Sweet heart, you are on your own. The batteries are on the dresser.

[-] 0 points by PretendHitGirI (13) 12 years ago

You must be queah or not queah enough.

Just reach in with both hands.

[-] -1 points by PretendHitGirI (13) 12 years ago

Well, I think some useful and binding language needs to be in place so that when certain conditions exist, the sterilization will not be voluntary for those applying for the freebies.

I could make the case for it and would be the case for it if I weren't such a special democratic society princess.

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

Since you are, why don't you give it a rest? Some things work out better without our meddling, don't you agree?

[-] -1 points by PretendHitGirI (13) 12 years ago

Nothing works worth a damn unless democrats are in there getting stinking rich and preventing republicans from putting reptiles in office. Now about that scan.......... and do you ever dress up like sesame street characters?

[-] 1 points by brightonsage (4494) 12 years ago

We used to have this idea about a thing called good governance. Don't think it's ever been tried, but what have we got to lose?

Yeah, I was one of the two old guys without teeth in the theater. OK, I ADMIT IT, I WAS THE ONE ON THE LEFT.

[-] -2 points by BlackSun (275) from Agua León, BC 12 years ago

Finally. I can definitely support a benifits that includes voluntary sterilization.

[-] 3 points by GypsyKing (8708) 12 years ago

Ah, a ungenics Nazi, You finally revealed yourself once and for all. I saw a little rhyme dedicated to you by ancientmariner, you should read it a thousand times. This IS my last comment to you - you pathetic specimen of child and wife abuser... And you will soon know why.

[-] -2 points by BlackSun (275) from Agua León, BC 12 years ago

Ah, accusations of abusing women and children. What a wonderful, caring little liberal you are. And it has nothing to do with eugenics. What a piece of shit you are.

[-] 1 points by bigbangbilly (594) 12 years ago

Nope, it is actually possible to forget to use birth control or be denied birth control by people known.

[-] 0 points by aflockofdoofi (-18) 12 years ago

Its free, how would it be denied?

[-] 0 points by bigbangbilly (594) 12 years ago

Relatives, friends, religious leaders, and/or those that believes that birth control is evil. Besides like anything even though the supply is huge it is not unlimited.

[-] 0 points by aflockofdoofi (-18) 12 years ago

But you do agree abortions will drop by a huge factor, maybe 80%?

[-] -1 points by BlackSun (275) from Agua León, BC 12 years ago

Why would they?

[-] -1 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

None of the people you named can deny anyone access to birth control unless they are committing the crime of kidnapping which is a felony with harsh penalties. There is NO excuse for not using birth control other than laziness. I doubt the abortion rates will go down. There's a LOT of lazy people in the USA.

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

Other than poverty and miseducation.

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Poverty no because you can get BC for free if you're poor. Miseducation isn't denying BC. It's still available regardless of someone's knowledge.

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

Have you ever applied? Do you know what the enormous hurdles are to qualify? I do. You make it sound easy. It is ANYTHING but that. It is a long, drawn out humiliating process, that is designed to keep as many people off the rolls as possible. And NO teenager qualifies unless their parents do. And it is STILL not available AT ALL in a couple of states unless there is parental permission.

In my state, if you are single you don't qualify if you have an income greater than $140.00 dollars per MONTH. Real easy.

Keep living in your myths.

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Look dumbass. In my town there's a free clinic where the poor CAN get it for free.Sounds like you need to move. You're a conspiracy freak ey? It's all designed so as to keep people off the rolls.Yeah it's all a plan to keep poor women and teenagers pregnant. That sounds prettty stupid dude.

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

Your town is not the rest of America, you myopic moron. You right wingers can't seen to look past your own noses to see problems outside of your own insulated little worlds.

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Neither is your dumbass. You can't tell me jack shit about being poor. I bet you've never even truly been hungry.Bet you never spent winters with no heat. You don't know shit you arrogant little fuck.

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

You make some pretty hefty assumptions, asshole. In fact that's all you make. I have not only gone hungry, I was raised in a single family home in which my mother was forced by circumstances to go on welfare. She was so ashamed that she refused to call it by name.

Still I was lucky compared to many others. But unlike you right wing motherfuckers, I don't judge them. I happen to know I was simply luckier.

So you can go fuck yourself.

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Sure you have.More likely you're some spoiled brat just looking to protest something, anything. You've never been hungry a day in your life lol.

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

Just another one of your false, evidence free, stupid fucked up assumptions.

But thanks from coming out from under your bridge, troll.

Now go fuck your sister again.

and religious stupidity. I doubt abortions will drop by more than 20% in the "deep south" because of the indoctrination that everyone goes through here.

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

Absolutely. That's what I meant in part by miseducation. The abstinence only sex education taught in the Bible Belt has nasty consequences. More teenage girls get STDs and pregnant who are in those programs than anywhere else. Teenage pregnancy in the South and Southwest occurs at 2 to 3 times the rate as in the North.

http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/FB-ATSRH.html

[-] 0 points by Perspective (948) 12 hours ago "None of the people you named can deny anyone access to birth control"

In fact that's not true. (What a surprise.) Texas and Utah - two of the states with the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the country - require parental consent for contraceptive services paid for with state funds. So parents in those states can effectively block a kid from getting the pill, since teens aren't likely to be able to pay for it on their own.

Despite all this, teen pregnancy rates have been dropping for 20 years largely due to easier availability of contraception and education in regions other than the South and Southwest, other than in the Bible Belt.

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Gee maybe the parents don't want their teenagers having sex. Who the fuck are you to tell someone how to raise their children?

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

Do you really believe that they won't have sex if they can't get contraception? THey're teenagers without major impulse control. I guess it would be better for them to get pregnant. You either prefer them to get abortions of go on the dole at public expense. Now THAT would be a real cost savings to the public!

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

That is not anyone's decision to make about contraception than the parent's. It's certainly not yours or the govts.

[-] 1 points by epa1nter (4650) from Rutherford, NJ 12 years ago

Yay. Go Teenage Pregnancy!

Isn't it funny that the states with the most restrictive laws also have the most unwanted teenage pregnancies?

I've never talked to an ostrich before. How does it feel keeping one's head in the sand?

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Indoctrination? You mean being raised going to church? You're just another left wing moron who wants to make everyone believe how you do. Arrogant fuck.

[-] 0 points by XenuLives (1645) from Charlotte, NC 12 years ago

Religion is a bunch of fiction that was used as a mechanism for control in ancient times. I don't care if you want to believe in people who walk on water and other ridiculous fiction, but keep it in the churches where it belongs and out of my government.

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

Ah see what I mean. You don't believe so no one else should. Who the fuck are you to tell people how to live their lives you fucking atheist? Keep the govt out of religion dumbass. You're a pathetic person trying to impose your beliefs on others. FUCK YOU,you're nothing but a simple pimple on the ass of humanity and you don't know shit.

[-] 0 points by XenuLives (1645) from Charlotte, NC 12 years ago

Struck a nerve, have I? Is believing in fairy tales and make believe so important to you that you have to attack everyone who doesn't buy into your delusions?

Like I said, keep your beliefs out of government, and I'll keep my beliefs out of your churches.

[-] 0 points by Perspective (-243) 12 years ago

How is religion getting into govt on this issue? Like I said, you dumbass. The govt is sticking it's nose in religion's business. I could care less if you believe in anything, that's a personal decision you have to live with. Once again."Who the fuck are you to tell people how to live their lives you fucking atheist? Keep the govt out of religion dumbass. You're a pathetic person trying to impose your beliefs on others. FUCK YOU,you're nothing but a simple pimple on the ass of humanity and you don't know shit."

[-] 0 points by XenuLives (1645) from Charlotte, NC 12 years ago

No, religion is sticking its nose in government business. Its you religious shits that want to force non-Christians to be discriminated against when it comes to health care. I would rather kill myself than work in a Christian hospital based on the amount of HATE that you idiots spew on a daily basis. Go back to church where you can exclude anyone you want and make up any kind of fiction that suits your deluded selves.

.....no. Not everyone uses birth control

[-] -2 points by FreeDiscussion5 (12) 12 years ago

I think that there should be a LEGAL issue with this. Like a "contract." The contract would mean that IF we pay for YOUR birth control and YOU dont use it correctly then you owe US money or YOU pay for YOUR own abortion. I like contracts. You break the contract and YOU pay.
