(CNSNews.com) -- MIT Professor of Linguistics Noam Chomsky, a long-time left-wing writer and activist, told Al-Jazeera that he does not believe President Barack Obama has a “moral center,” and that he is running a “global assassination campaign” using drone warfare.

“There’s some nice rhetoric here and there, but you look at the actual policies, they’re pretty shocking,” Chomsky said, speaking of President Obama. “The drone assassination campaign’s a perfectly good example. It’s just a global assassination campaign.”

In an interview on Saturday, Jan. 12, with Al-Jazeera’s Rosiland Jordan, Chomsky was asked, “Does President Barack Obama have a moral compass? And if he does, is he ignoring it at his own peril, at the country’s peril?”

Chomsky said, “It’s an interesting question. During the last election, I happened to be talking to a well-known black activist very much involved in civil rights and other activism, and he told me a story. He said that after Obama’s first election in 2008, he was visited by a group of African American women leading activists who wanted to talk to him. He said he was there when they came out of the meeting and asked them what he was like.”

“And their answer was this man has no moral center,” said Chomsky. “That’s their reaction and I think they’re right. If you look at his policies, I think that’s what they reveal.”

“There’s some nice rhetoric here and there but you look at the actual policies, they’re pretty shocking,” Chomsky said. “The drone assassination campaign’s a perfectly good example. It’s just a global assassination campaign.”

Noam Chomsky has been a professor of Linguistics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) since 1955. He has also lectured and written on economics, U.S. foreign policy and international relations. In his current post at MIT, he is Institute Professor & Professor of Linguistics (Emeritus).

He has described himself as “anarcho-syndacalist,” which calls for the organization of workers to combat the anti-working class interests of the State.
