The link is below and the story below that.Love how it says "We've expressed our concerns about the treatment of all those being arrested who were exercising their rights to peaceful protest," State Department spokesman Mark Toner. Is this Mark Toner mentally retarded?? Does he even know about the protesters treatment here in his own country??? Or do they just not care how Americans are treated?? .US concerned over arrests of Russian protesters ..The United States has voiced concern over the treatment of protesters rounded up in Russia amid major opposition demonstrations to contest the results of parliamentary elections.

"We've expressed our concerns about the treatment of all those being arrested who were exercising their rights to peaceful protest," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters on Wednesday.

"We would obviously support the rights of anyone to peaceful protest -- emphasis on peaceful -- anywhere in the world," Toner said. "Russia's no different."

Toner said he was not aware of any formal diplomatic exchange about the protests. But Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has publicly questioned the fairness of the election, angering Russia.

Riot police in helmets dragged over 550 protesters into detention vans Tuesday evening in central Moscow, during what commentators have described as the biggest opposition rallies since the chaotic early 1990s.

Despite the arrests, the opposition has pledged more rallies to protest what it sees as fraud in Sunday's election, in which Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party won, but with a reduced majority.

Several leading US senators criticised the arrests and the "blatant fraud" of the election in a joint statement.

"We condemn the sweeping arrests of hundreds of opposition leaders, journalists, and human rights activists in Russia and the use of violence against peaceful protesters," Republican John McCain, Independent Joseph Lieberman and Democrat Jeanne Shaheen wrote.

"We call upon the Russian government to release all of the political prisoners it has unjustly detained and clarify the whereabouts and condition of those individuals in its custody," they added.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party won the polls, but with a sharply reduced majority, an indication his popularity might be waning.

International observers said the polls were slanted in favor of United Russia, and the opposition says that the ruling party's performance would have been even worse in free polls.

Its always a favorite tactic of those in power to try to misdirect or distract.

Besides its fun to point the finger at somebody else, then try to run and duck for cover.

But in all it is very hypocritical.

Ok I have to disagree with you on this. These kinds of protests in Russia are historic for that country which has never know true freedom. Russia is an authoritarian regime that regularly oppresses it's people. The US is somewhat authoritarian, it has the highest incarceration rate and these crack downs are certainly not right, but it pales in comparison with Russia. For one thing, OWS is only being evicted by state governments, not the federal one, and the movement itself is not under attack, just the occupations, while in Russia, human rights activists have turned up dead, and it may have a lower incarceration rate than the US but the conditions are far worse. Russia has a tendency to use LETHAL violence against people that oppose it's power, while in the US is using NON-LETHAL measures to evict protesters. I don't know about you, but for me a few watery eyes is much more preferred than bullet holes and baton beatings. I applaud the state department for condemning these obviously rigged elections and exposing the joke that is Russian democracy.

Its just political fluff. I would bet money that even Hilary Clinton understands that nobody in Russia is taking anything the US says on democracy seriously anymore... its quite obvious that the USA does not even have the illusion of democracy anymore.

The moral high ground is long gone.

The hypocrisy is boggling. And McCain has to be the biggest hypocrite of them all. What a piece of shit. He was in Nam for Christ's sake. You'd think he would be on the side of the American citizen. See what politics does to a person? It's moral poison.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvnj5VIDsNI Maybe they are watching too much fox news or maybe it's conspiracy propaganda to attempt to overthrow Russian government...Nee, that would be too stupid. Or would it?

When citizens in other countries protest, they are said to be fighting for democracy. When citizens in the US protest, they are labelled anarchists or increasingly, as terrorists. Looks like the US govt. only "protects" democracy when it exhibits a potential to profit the corporations. All else is either ignored or suppressed, as we have already seen (and not on TV!), by any means necessary.

The US sets itself up as super cop and morality monitor. Reports were that the Russian demonstrations were respected by the authorities.
