Forum Post: NBC News Content To Be Provided By Billionaire Obama, MoveOn Donors

NBC has reached an agreement to broadcast news content provided by a media organisation run by a team that has ploughed millions of dollars into campaigning for Barack Obama and donated large cash amounts to organisations such as the George Soros affiliated MoveOn.org and the now defunct ACORN.

The LA Times reports that NBC has opened up the newsrooms of all its affiliates across the country to ProPublica, which describes itself as an “independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest.”

NBC affiliated and Comcast owned radio stations will also broadcast ProPublica content under the agreement.

“The arrangement comes as Comcast moves to fulfill its commitment to federal regulators to strengthen local, public-interest programming in the wake of its purchase of NBCUniversal earlier this year.” the Times report states.

NBC stations will also produce their own stories based upon ProPublica’s output.

“We put the reporting at their fingertips and they can do terrific local stories with it,” said Richard Tofel, general manager for ProPublica.

The development represents yet another infiltration of corporate news media by special interests with their own political agenda.

ProPublica already delivers content to more than 50 different news organizations, including 60 Minutes, CNN, ABC World News, USA Today, the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post, Politico, Salon.com, Slate, MSN Money, MSNBC.com, Newsweek, Reader’s Digest, Business Week, This American Life, and NPR among many others.

The organisation operates with a bounty of $10 million per year from married billionaires Herbert and Marion Sandler, who are the former chief executives of the Golden West Financial Corporation, formerly one of the largest mortgage lenders in the US.

The couple sold the company to the Wachovia Corporation for $26 billion in 2008. The ramifications for each party in the deal could not have been more contrasting when the financial collapse hit just months after the acquisition.

Though it claims to be nonpartisan, the intention behind Propublica’s output becomes clear with examination of other donations regularly made by The Sandlers.

Federal Election Commission database records show that they have donated hundreds of thousands to the Democratic Party and funded MoveOn.org to the tune of $2.5 million. They are or have also been involved with a host of other partisan organisations including ACORN, Media Matters and The Democracy Alliance.

The Sandlers also regularly contribute to the Center for American Progress, a Washington lobbyist group that has direct and weighty influence on Obama Administration policy.

As ever, globalist stalwart George Soros also has his tentacles in ProPublica, given that in 2010 it received a two-year contribution of $125,000 each year from Soros’ Open Society Foundations.

In a revealing piece for The American Thinker, Ed Lasky comments that the Sandlers “are not merely out to elect Democrats, but to also permanently realign U.S. politics and shift our society and culture in a far-left wing direction.”

The level of news content ownership and distribution by corporations and special interests groups has reached such an extreme that Americans can no longer turn on the television or tune into the radio without being bombarded by carefully crafted and paid for propaganda from both ends of the political spectrum.

It is no surprise or coincidence that we have witnessed a seismic shift in audiences away from the dinosaur media and towards the alternative online media. However, with groups such as ProPublica and MoveOn, we are now witnessing an attempt on behalf of powerful special interests to masquerade as alternative grassroots media sources, when in reality they merely represent an attempt at reinvention on behalf of the exposed establishment.

How It Is Funded

The Sandler Foundation made a major, multi-year commitment to fund ProPublica at launch. Other philanthropic contributions have been received as well, and more are needed. Click here to donate.

We spend more than 85 cents out of every dollar on news – almost the exact opposite of traditional print news organizations, even very good ones, that devote about 15 cents of each dollar spent to news. From a philanthropic perspective it is also worth noting that our model assures an unusually high level of accountability for a non-profit. Our stories have to be sufficiently compelling to convince editors and producers to accord them space or time. As they do so consistently, donors will be able to be confident that professional standards are being met and maintained, and that important work is being undertaken.

Beginning in 2011, ProPublica also accepts advertising. And we are constantly exploring possible new revenue streams, although philanthropy, in large gifts and small, will continue to be our principal source of income for the foreseeable future.

Governance

ProPublica is a non-profit corporation, and is exempt from taxes under Section 501(c)(3). It has its own Governing Board, chaired by Herbert Sandler. Mr. Steiger is a member of the Board. A Journalism Advisory Board of leaders in the field, and a Business Advisory Council has also been assembled.

What is the problem? This isn't hidden news.

ProPublica is an open book, and have won multiple journalism awards. The head is the former managing editor of the WSJ and managing editor was an editor at NYT - center right and center left. Objectivity and diligent fact-checking is what they're all about. Plenty of references here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ProPublica

They are one of the few media sources available that are covering issues like this: The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Colorado has opened a grand jury investigation into the practices of DaVita Inc., the country’s second-largest dialysis chain.

As we’ve reported previously, Colorado-based DaVita operates more than 1,600 dialysis clinics nationwide and controls roughly one-third of the market for care relied on by about 400,000 Americans with kidney failure.

The company disclosed the investigation Wednesday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, describing it as “preliminary.”

It’s not yet clear exactly where the government’s attention is focused. The company said the probe appears to overlap with another Justice Department investigation into possible overuse of Epogen, a drug used to treat anemia, as well as the chain’s relationships with doctors.

Jeff Dorschner, the spokesman for the Colorado U.S. Attorney’s Office, declined to comment on the case.

In an earnings call with financial analysts on Wednesday, DaVita Chief Executive Kent Thiry said the company would cooperate with government investigators.

“We are eager to educate them,” he said. (The company also provided ProPublica with a longer statement.) “We are comfortable and confident with our business practices.”

The company appears to be facing scrutiny on multiple fronts.

A whistleblower lawsuit filed in 2007 and recently unsealed by a federal court in Atlanta alleges that DaVita systematically wasted certain medications to collect hundreds of millions of dollars in additional Medicare payments. The company has denied the allegations.

Last year, ProPublica published an investigation on U.S. dialysis care, finding that patients often received treatment in environments that were unsafe or unsanitary, though these problems were not specific to any particular provider.

Our analysis of government inspections turned up hundreds of instances in which facilities were cited for breaches in infection control, as well as egregious cases in which lapses in care may have led to patient injuries or deaths.

The full text of DaVita's statement to ProPublica is below:

DaVita learned from the US Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado that it opened a grand jury investigation that covers certain activities of the company. The investigation is at a very preliminary stage. While its precise scope is unclear, it appears to overlap, at least in part, with the OIG Dallas and the Eastern District of Missouri matters regarding physician relationships, which we have previously disclosed. We do thousands of transactions and work very hard to get every one right and are comfortable and confident with our business practices, which go through extensive internal and external review. Our strong record of compliance over the last eleven years is well-established in the healthcare industry. At this time, there is nothing more that we can say about this matter other than that the company intends to cooperate with the investigation. http://www.propublica.org/article/federal-grand-jury-probes-major-dialysis-providerFollow @fieldsrobin

Pull your head out. You sure as hell haven't discussed any issues related to any of this or other topics that they cover.

[-] -1 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

How did you like it that they never warned you about Obama and lead people to vote for him?

[-] -1 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

You don't understand how misinformation works you use accurate news that leads you to false conclusion. Also disinfo sources don't always lie.

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

I understand perfectly how it works. A great example of spreading disinformation would be: Alex Jones.

[-] -1 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

Wow attacking one of if not the most accurate news people out there. I know you think Soros can do no wrong because you do none of your own research. Can you point out a lie Alex Jones has said minus the Y2K reporting of news story's that turned out to be untrue? Also the Y2K story's were from the MSM he just reported them?

[-] 2 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

Wow that is moronic at best did you hear the count down before they took down building 7? Also notice the guy yelling kill MM was making it so no one can hear him while also trying to discredit him... ((((COINTELPRO)))). Alex J also never advocates violence he actually condemns it. Here is a thought listen to the show one day you may just realize he is not what people tell you. Also instead of saying that can't be true research it yourself.

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Alex Jones likes to drum up fear. That is the reality. So, it's bad enough that people have to put mainstream media under a microscope with their information but now we have to contend with a lying fear monger Alex Jones.

[-] 1 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

If the truth makes you scared maybe you should stop seeking it. It is scary that we are headed into WW3, does that make me a fear monger for saying it? Watch the Obama Deception he was spot on about Obama. Watch it instead of looking for some debunker site.

Yeah, secondary device in a high school. You don't have a case.

Bombs on 911 many news sources!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8XBxw7k8rk

[-] 2 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

Did you notice he spliced a video together and it was extremely obvious both in the video and audio.

[-] 2 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

Alex Jones is a non-interventionist meaning against war. I know what you are now though a liar.

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Alex Jones feeds on warmongering. He has the intellect of a gnat. He cashes in on fear.

In his head there is a future WWIII because in his world it has to happen in the US. He needs to be at least up to the reality of the rest of the world.

The video is there for speed. I'm sorry if you don't like it. But, Alex took that shit out of context just so he could feed a conspiracy theory. That is dumb as all get out.

[-] 1 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

I guess you have nothing more then?

[-] 1 points by Infowar (295) 12 years ago

Fact is it is just about to happen Russia is saying they will defend Iran and Syria, China says it will defend Pakistan and both are preparing for war. If you deny this you live in a black hole devoid of any reality.

[-] 3 points by flip (7101) 12 years ago

don't be silly - nbc is a huge corporation - beholden to other huge capitalist corporations - they may support obama because he supports corporate capitalism but they are not in any way left wing! look at the coverage in the build up to the war in iraq - 1991 or 2003 - they backed both bushes all the way - the propaganda machine for the state - stop posting nonsense - we have enough trouble without you posting all you silly shit

[-] 2 points by AttorneyGeneral89 (2) 12 years ago

Golden West swamped Wachovia and ultimately caused them to fail and be bailed out and sold to Wells Fargo as part of a scam transaction arranged by Goldman Sach's US Treasury secretary and Bankster Hank Paulson ! There should be a "most wanted list" on this website for all the unprosecuted criminals that are running this Country !

[-] 2 points by raz (32) 12 years ago

Well the rights got faux news so now the left can have their channel, democrats are far less dangerous than republicans.

[-] -1 points by EXPOSED (222) 12 years ago

As if NBC, ABC and CBS weren't left already...

And I disagree with your last statement, democrats are far more dangerous than republicans, their propaganda is way more sophisticated and actually PRETEND they give shit about the middle class and the poor. At least the republicans don't pretend that they are for the poor, the democrats are in bed with the banks and corporations that loot the poor and middle class. The dems deceptive platform is far more sophisticated which makes them more dangerous...

yes, awful reporting. seems like more and more of mainstream media does this kind of thing, intentionally or not it doesnt matter. Its irresponsible and this type of thing could cause more tensions between countries.

whether its msnbc, cnn, fox, shrugs... they're no better than a rumor on Wallstreet sometimes.

[-] 1 points by Brandon37 (372) 12 years ago

And people still think there is no such thing as the left wing media. They are so busy targeting Fox News that they cannot see the real culprit.
