  • In the Congress today, both Senators from nine (9) states voted NOT to allow any rational debate about our gun laws, even though 20 elementary school children were killed by a crazed gunman in Newtown, even though 6 school faculty were killed in Newtown, and even though 3,300 other Americans have been killed by gun violence since Newtown.

  • These toadies for the NRA refused to vote to even allow any discussion on the floors of Congress, where debate is supposed to shape our democracy. No discussion. Can't be talked about. Nope.

  • BOTH SENATORS VOTED NO:

  • Alaska: Begich (D-AK), Nay; Murkowski (R-AK), Nay
  • Arkansas: Boozman (R-AR), Nay; Pryor (D-AR), Nay
  • Idaho: Crapo (R-ID), Nay; Risch (R-ID), Nay
  • Kansas: Moran (R-KS), Nay; Roberts (R-KS), Nay
  • Kentucky: McConnell (R-KY), Nay; Paul (R-KY), Nay
  • Nebraska: Fischer (R-NE), Nay; Johanns (R-NE), Nay
  • Texas: Cornyn (R-TX), Nay; Cruz (R-TX), Nay
  • Utah: Hatch (R-UT), Nay; Lee (R-UT), Nay
  • Wyoming: Barrasso (R-WY), Nay; Enzi (R-WY), Nay

  • And in twelve (12) states, only one of the two Senators voted to allow debate about gun violence:

  • ONE OF TWO SENATORS VOTED NO:

  • Florida: Nelson (D-FL), Yea; Rubio (R-FL), Nay
  • Indiana: Coats (R-IN), Nay; Donnelly (D-IN), Yea
  • Iowa: Grassley (R-IA), Nay; Harkin (D-IA), Yea
  • Louisiana: Landrieu (D-LA), Yea; Vitter (R-LA), Nay
  • Mississippi: Cochran (R-MS), Nay; Wicker (R-MS), Yea
  • Missouri: Blunt (R-MO), Nay; McCaskill (D-MO), Yea
  • New Jersey: Lautenberg (D-NJ), Not Voting; Menendez (D-NJ), Yea
  • Ohio: Brown (D-OH), Yea; Portman (R-OH), Nay
  • Oklahoma: Coburn (R-OK), Yea; Inhofe (R-OK), Nay
  • South Carolina: Graham (R-SC), Yea; Scott (R-SC), Nay
  • South Dakota: Johnson (D-SD), Yea; Thune (R-SD), Nay

  • Yes. In the final analysis we get the government we deserve.

  • Tolerating a government that fails to enact sound legislation aimed at protecting our bank accounts, our retirement savings, our investments, the pharmaceuticals we take, the safety of our food, and the fairness of our tax system ends up harming the 99%.

The prioritization of gun stories over home foreclosure stories denotes the media pulling the wool over main street. Yes, guns are an important issue.

But when the media waits for millions of foreclosure victims who are being unfairly harmed by Federal Hobbs Act violations, (the taking of property under the color of right), to crack up, get a gun, and then harm themselves, their own family, or someone else, they are wrongly prioritizing what matters most.

  • Why is sensible gun legislation and better home foreclosure rules and legislation an either/or proposition?

  • Should not our highly paid Congressional "representatives" be able to walk and chew gum at the same time . . .

  • And why do they need to take so many "recesses"?? I thought we moved beyond recess when we left elementary school.

The foreclosure story has been going ever since Obama took office. Gun stories come and go, that's why, and they are tied in to foreclosures.

Give people less of a reason to feel like they were stolen from or that they have no say, and maybe that is just as effective as forcing the issue via gun legislation. Ironically, it probably would be easier to pass gun legislation if people did not feel like the government was backing deep pockets over homeowners.

You are already taking homes you didn't earn, now you want guns as well?

"I do hope someone plans to mount a serious campaign designed to remove these nay saying fools from office in the course of their next election "

There are TONS of people doing just that, and they are still having meetings on a regular basis. I believe the name for them are "unicorn chasers"

Democide - death by government has killed 290 million people in recent history. That's quite a few more than the deaths at sandy hook.

defence against this is the main reason for the 2nd ammendment.

Good luck explaining that away.

Ninety-two percent of Americans favor background checks for all potential gun buyers, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll.

Universal background checks are one of the proposals that President Obama has called on Congress to pass as part of his proposal to combat gun violence in the wake of the massacre in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school in December.

"If you want to buy a gun -- whether it's from a licensed dealer or a private seller -- you should at least have to show you are not a felon or somebody legally prohibited from buying one," Mr. Obama said Wednesday, adding that "as many as 40 percent of all gun purchases are conducted without a background check."

I'll be willing to bet if the debate was about "youth violence and mental illness" there would have been a debate.

-Again. Congress needs to walk and chew gum at the same time.

  • (1) Pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that GW Bush not only failed to ask citizens to pay for, but he gave them a tax cut to boot;

  • (2) Institute reforms on handguns and assault weapons and gun show loopholes so we can reduce the number of children killed with guns in the future;

  • (3) Get to the heart of foreclosures. Institute Congressional investigations that hold regulators to task, hold banks accountable, and drill down to the core of the problem. A problem that includes Wall Street profit centers

  • (4) Education. How about beefing up America's flagging education system so it is not behind two dozen other nations around the world. And so we don't have to give Special Visas to foreign scholars who possess skills and knowledges that our population no longer has.

(5) How about repairing our deteriorating infrastructure? The American Civil Engineering Society now says America has hundreds of billions of dollars worth of needed repairs to buildings, bridges, roads, electrical grid, power plants, water systems, wastewater systems and much more

  • Every citizen should demand that their legislators not take a recess in Congress until they have addressed most/all of the above issues. Now. Do it now.

  • And how about instituting a "WAR TAX"??? The Iraq and Afghanistan wars will likely now cost some $6 Trillion. Even though Dick Cheney said the wars would pay for themselves in oil revenues. And even though GWB gave massive tax cuts, for the first time in a time of war. It is time to pay for the war. Got a problem with the deficit? Got a problem with the debt ceiling??? Check the costs of the wars and how those costs affected our budget and debt obligations.

  • WAR TAX NOW!!!

  • The 1% profited from the wars. Now it is their time to PAY!

Hey, Obama could have curtailed the wars when he was first elected - but he didn't.

With regard to handgunds and assault weapons and gun show loopholes - how about we focus on "Parenting" and those idiots who brought those children into this world without giving one damm "give a shit" about them,

As far as our deteriorating infastructure - the Federal Government is broke, the States are broke and the counties and cities are broke.

They all pissed away taxpayer money instead of focusing on what is important.

As far as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan -if you remember while both wars were in progress everyone was saying it was about "oil" while Bush was in office.

Now that no oil was used to fund the war it's about "Bush" again.

At present there is a disconnect between the stock market and what's really happening in this country.

PIssing away billions of dollars on failed green energy projects along with 49 million people on welfare with 90 million people no longer in the work force really says a lot about just how this administration has a handle on just how well the country is doing

He wants everyone to think things are just fine - after all jobs were the main focus on his campaign promises.

What's really happening in this country is businesses are pissed off at Obama and as a result are sitting on hugh sums of money and investing in the stock market because they can get a better return at a cheaper price.

With the way things are, small businesses aren't budging when it comes to hiring people and if they have to hire anyone it will be part time because of the bull shit Washington DC is handing them.

Have you driven around the country side to see just how many shopping malls have vacancies and for rent signs posted?

Obama invested in Wall Street instead of Main street and blew smoke up the ass of those who voted for him.

Things will change when he leaves office but not until then.

  • Ooooooo Weeee! Your incoherent rant does nothing to advance the public dialogue.

  • Just re-read and think about what you just wrote, above.

  • Take your first point about Obama not "curtailing the wars when he was first elected."

  • You don't seem to care about how the wars started. The Afghanistan war should have been about 9-11. But because George W. Bush took his eye off the ball, and started an ill-gotten war in Iraq, that represented no imminent threat to the US, and had no WMDs. Bush then gave Americans tax cuts in time of two wars, and that has raised our debts. And you obviously have no clue how massive a military presence is. And you have no clue what it takes to unwind this mess. And you seem to ignore the fact that those two wars, that GWB failed to ask Americans to pay for, and that GWP gave us tax cuts during time of war, will now cost some $6 Trillion.

It's monopoly money.

Ask the fed to print up another 16 trillion.

Paper and ink only.

Obama could have stopped the wars but he didn't - You can't deal with that can you?

Bush has more balls then Obama ever had - Obama is a wimp who has done what Hitler done - lead the sheep into thinking he is the greatest thing since sliced bread and the X and Y generation are his followers.

That's why this country is so screwed up - it is a result of the X and Y generation not giving a shit expecting someone else to do their bidding for them.

You reap what you sow and we are seeing that now.

[-] 2 points by Toynbee (656) from Savannah, GA 11 years ago
  • There you go again. You seem to have forgotten important facts about Hitler, like his invasion of Poland. The death camps that killed some 6 million Jews and others he deemed unfriendly.

  • You seem to have forgotten that Bush took his eye off the Afghan war when he moved US forces to a full-blown invasion of Iraq. That move cost more lives in Afghanistan and has stretched out the end of that war. Not to mention the costs of the Afghan war. And the Iraq misadventure was . . . well ... a really poor decision that cost American lives and Trillions of dollars... separate and apart from the Afghan war.

  • You are right. We reap what we sow. And we are now paying an extremely high price for Bush's botched Afghan war, Bush's war-of-choice in Iraq, and the bills for those wars that will likely exceed $6 Trillion.

  • Oooo Wee you have blinders on and a very selective memory.
