Synopsis

Orwell's final novel, 1984, is the story of one man's struggle against the ubiquitous, menacing state power (“Big Brother”) that tries to dictate nearly every aspect of human life. The novel is a classic in anti-utopian fiction, and a trenchant political satire that remains as relevant today as when it was first published. Annotation

Examines different aspects of Orwell's anti-utopian classic, with a biographical sketch of the author and critical essays on this work. Books of the Century; New York Times review, June 1949 - Mark Schorer

It is probable that no other work of this generation has made us desire freedom more earnestly or loathe tyranny with such fullness. 1984, the most contemporary novel of the year and who knows of now many past and to come, is a great examination into and dramatization of Lord Acton's famous apothegm, " power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrups absolutely. Excellent point - 1984 !!!! people from the way back generation talk about that a lot! Thanks for the links - i will re-acquaint myself again. I don't remember if I read the book long ago, I think so, but i did the movie, but I certainly need to see it again.

Thank you!

Poignant cautionary tale.

Every time you see a camera give it the finger. Try putting up cameras on your front porch and point them to the street see how long that will last.

[-] 3 points by RufusJFisk52 (259) 12 years ago

lol, i give the finger to camera's in my city constantly, they are everywhere here in lancaster pa

[-] 0 points by buik2 (66) 12 years ago

if you wanna get them, and let me just say i am fine with the cameras, rig a pool pole and a can of black spray paint or glue or somethin with some sorta trigger mechanism and go get em.

more effective than the finger, probably

[-] 1 points by friendlyopposition (574) 12 years ago

Why can't you put cameras on your front porch?

i think its security for them, not us, not the 99%.

Most people "in the know" claim the govt created this terrorism scare to control people, and as the Internet was coming in, they didn't want corps to make it private. Actually snooping by the govt is illegal according to the US constitution.

I don't feel any more secure with the govt programs. Only 14 US citizens (not military) have died due to terrorism since 9/11. ONLY 14!!! but 50,000 a year die in car accidents. That's 500,000 people in ten years!!! And if the govt puts in public transport in all major and medium sized cities, they know it will reduce deaths by over 80%. But the govt doesn't care about the lives of the 99%. You have been handed a myth - thats what most people think - and me too...

Your father was a wise man. But most people are perfectly willing to trade liberty for security. Of course it never is very good security but by then it's too late.

[-] 0 points by buik2 (66) 12 years ago

if you think having a few cameras in your town compromises your liberty, you should probably kill yourself, because they are not going away.

give you liberty or give you death, right? well, do it!

You are right. I'm putting the gun to my head right now. Jesus what an asshole....

The second person chosen to run the 9/11 Commission's "Investigation" was already an established expert in exploiting terrorism to strengthen governmental control. Recall that the first choice was Heinz.

I was at the World Trade Center 3 weeks before 9/11 with protest posters in hand. I was 10 years early....

[-] 0 points by fjolsvit (957) from Washington, DC 12 years ago

Anybody actually figured this out.

[-] 0 points by fjolsvit (957) from Washington, DC 12 years ago

Care to elaborate?

[-] 1 points by joe100 (306) 12 years ago

Loooong story. We were making a documentary film, and we have the video. Still have not put it up, but we need to. its a few hours long.....

VERY Short version:

Ever see that movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"? Or "Field of Dreams" - baseball movie w kevin costner?

In both of those movies the characters had this urge to go somewhere and do something, and they didn't know why, but they just HAD to follow their instincts.

My friend Phil, a basketball player, computer programer, like me. He is from Queens, and attends the "bello" basketball tournament every summer. Had had been telling me about it for years - I won't elaborate how NBA pros go there, and college stars, etc. it's fun.

And the year of 2001, for some reason, I felt I HAD to go that year. i didnt know why. We were both living in Atlanta, and going to NYC was a big trip. i had this feeling that economically things were going seriously downhill, because I was part of all the Internet corporate think tanks at the time. I am a very smart guy for hire. Without being arrogant, several people have told me I have the highest IQ of anyone they have ever met. Though I can be REAL stupid too... hahaha. But in software the largest companies in the world hired me to lead their mission critical software systems. Its what I do, places like Delta air lines, air traffic control, online banking for bank of america, UPS, ATT, etc.

And for some reason, I had this HUGE urge to write a book about Internet economics, and how if things were NOT done correctly NOW (meaning at that time in 2001) the 99% would suffer. Of course I didn't use the term 99% back then, but it was the same feeling.

So i made up some posters - thinks like

One World One Economy One Internet One Plan

and the first title of my book was "The Official Guide To Internet Architecture"

I wrote in such haste, it was not even edited - it had misspellings, I didn't have enough time to finish it before going to new york. I printed it anyway.

I had this overwhelming feeling I had to get these ideas out to the people. So I printed up books, made posters, and decided to go to the Bello basketball tournament in Queens.

Me and my hommies flew up to NYC -there were four of us.

Everyone at the tournament was African American, cept me. i was only "white boy", though I am half morrocan and half german, I am not WHTIE WHITE, just white.

So we go to the tournament in Queens.

And for some reason, I thought I should get the books to a street book seller, because its all I had time to do. I had to go back to Atlanta and work, etc. We took the posters, put them up where we could, and i got a reservation at a hotel on Gold street, near the World Trade Center. i think it was a holiday inn. and me and my hommies had no real business taking a trip. though I used to make $250k/yr in 1998, after the tech crash we were all broke.

But we managed to scrape by. I paid for most of the trip costs for me and my hommies.

Though I was born in NYC, like lots of new yorkers, I never really did the tourist stuff. Never went to the Statue of Liberty, cause I used to see it all the time. I finally went last year for the first time.

And I had NEVER been to the World Trade Center until that week.

So we booked the hotel, and I think I took a picture or two of the world trade center.

At the tournament I met Calvin Gooding Jr, who was in the towers, and who didnt make it. He left a pregnant wife, and now she is about 10 years old.

So we go to the tournament, have a great time, meet lots of people, and there were foreshadowing events that we caught on film that kinda foreshadowed Calvin's imminent end that would occur in three weeks.

then we go to the world trade center - do the book and poster thing, and return to ATLANTA.

Then three weeks later.... BOOM - we couldn't believe it. We just kept repeating to ourselves "We were just there three weeks ago!"

I will work on getting the film online - you can see it. It's interesting, but a little slow at first. I was new to film making. So the first 30 minutes is kinda slow, but then it picks up. We have shots at the tournament and us in NYC.

So that's the short version.

Yeah, it was weird. and I bet I was not the only one who had weird feelings three weeks before. Prophesying is real. It ain't no pretend thing. Some people, sometimes, feel the vibe of what's coming next.

A few weeks before that plane landed in the hudson I dreamt of myself being in a falling plane, but having trust in Gd that everything would be OK. And then the plane landed in hudson. I can't prove anything, and I don't care to, but once in while I get this vibe about stuff.

So that's the short story.

This is ironic candor on his part:

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Philip_D._Zelikow

from Emad Mekay for IPS, 29 March 2004:

"Why would Iraq attack America or use nuclear weapons against us? I'll tell you what I think the real threat (is) and actually has been since 1990 -- it's the threat against Israel," Zelikow told a crowd at the University of Virginia on Sep. 10, 2002, speaking on a panel of foreign policy experts assessing the impact of 9/11 and the future of the war on the al-Qaeda terrorist organisation.

"And this is the threat that dare not speak its name, because the Europeans don't care deeply about that threat, I will tell you frankly. And the American government doesn't want to lean too hard on it rhetorically, because it is not a popular sell," said Zelikow.

The statements are the first to surface from a source closely linked to the Bush administration acknowledging that the war, which has so far cost the lives of nearly 1200 U.S. troops and thousands of Iraqis, was motivated by Washington's desire to defend the Jewish state.

I woke up one morning and found myself surrounded by cameras. It was a bit unsettling, I can tell you.

It got so intrusive, that one day some clown actually took a picture of me, from directly over my shoulder. What could he have been photographing? The page of the paper I was reading?

WTF!?!

A friend of mine witnessed the event, and we used to joke about it. One day he tried to take my picture without my noticing.

This is that very picture:

I started a militia - and it will be a paid militia - let me know if you are ever interested. For all who survive: never have to worry about bills again! We are about the same age. I understand.....

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

I am a militia - why would I join yours?

[-] 1 points by joe100 (306) 12 years ago

Money, lots of it. Not really robinhood style, but we get back people's private property that was taken by govt and big corps. it's a rough life, but someone has to be a hero.

[-] 1 points by ronimacarroni (1089) 12 years ago

I'd like to join a militia

[-] 1 points by ithink (761) from York, PA 12 years ago

Cameras don't bother me, should they? I have never heard of anyone being harmed by a camera. I guess I have nothing to hide.

[-] 1 points by hchc (3297) from Tampa, FL 12 years ago

You will see what this leads to in the future...

[-] 1 points by joe100 (306) 12 years ago

Wow. My privacy is important to me. I refuse to let my government watch my every move. You are naive. It's not about having things to hide. I would imagine such a comment would be from someone quite young, and certainly less experienced than most of us on this forum.

My computer was confiscated by a US Govt agency because I write software that generates billions for corporations. They took my computer when I shipped it from Florida to NYC. No explanation was given. The UPS invoice said the computer was taken by a "US Govt Agency beyond UPS Control" You can find the invoice at OneRedPill.com - but it's deep in a big pdf file that is 500 pages, so it might be hard to find.

You sound pretty green ... just wait..... and live some more...

Maybe we could film you while you are pleasuring yourself or others... You wouldn't mind, would you? You have nothing to hide, right? Or maybe we can film you in the bathroom?

[-] 1 points by ithink (761) from York, PA 12 years ago

yeah i suppose i am pretty green. So, why would the us govmt care if you are making millions for corporations? Do you think they were they trying to stop you or steal your software for themselves?

No, the government does not think my life is that interesting. I am just another nameless faceless nobody.

[-] 1 points by joe100 (306) 12 years ago

i was supposed to be a big time playa - But the corps did steal my stuff, they bribed the judges to dismiss my patent case, and now I have to form a militia to get my money back. I have become a private security officer, and now I have rights to make an arrest for felonies done in my presence. it sucks. After I get my money, I will have to life very differently, always watching my back. But along the way, I am going to change the legal system, I hope. They wanted to see what I was thinking and writing. It was my personal computer. I was a lead architect for online banking for bank of america, I was a lead architect building air traffic controller software systems for Delta, I worked at UPS Headquarters.... yada yada yada.

You are YOUNG! You will make a name for yourself! You have time!

But for example, suppose I am with a friend, who is smoking a joint, or out of a pipe, and we go through a red light. I don't want that on tape! know what i mean? I am not embarrassed or ashamed of things I do, I just don't want to be monitored. And when you get older, not everyone, but sometimes you get involved in shit, for whatever reason. And if there is monitoring going on, your enemies will try to use that monitoring against you.

it's all software and all hackable. thanks for your posts! and good luck! If you ever need software advice... let me know!

Now, there's a constructive use for the Hoodie.

[-] 1 points by kingscrosssection (314) 12 years ago

Ummm not much you can do about it. A large portion of the problem is the availability of camera's now to the public. I.e. cellular phones

[-] 2 points by joe100 (306) 12 years ago

Thousands of people can smash many of the cameras.

Cell phones don't pose a problem because people are not doing monitoring and surveillance with them.

Can join a militia too.

[-] 0 points by kingscrosssection (314) 12 years ago

Where do you think a good portion of internet videos come from? Here's a hint. Not professionals.

[-] 1 points by joe100 (306) 12 years ago

Internet videos is NOT surveillance and monitoring. Videos on the Internet is not government monitoring.

The cameras referred to here are the police cameras, not any one's personal video camera, or anyone's personal cell phone, because those do not pose any constant surveillance threats, whatsoever.

Yes, someone can video you with there camera - people have been able to that for over 20 years. But the cameras at every stop light? This has only been around a little while. Sure someone can walk by and listen to your phone call, but we are talking about the NSA listening to everything.

Do you understand the post?

[-] 1 points by kingscrosssection (314) 12 years ago

The F.B.I. monitors youtube. And we know that for sure.

[-] 1 points by GoldmanSex (9) from New York City, NY 12 years ago

Join the police.

[-] 1 points by joe100 (306) 12 years ago

I prefer a private militia - but good point - and its what a lot of people do.

[-] 1 points by GoldmanSex (9) from New York City, NY 12 years ago

Or start your own secret society.

[-] 0 points by buik2 (66) 12 years ago

i am ok with the cameras, i dont know. i guess i am a very trusting sort. i am all for red light and speed cameras. its the only way that people will stop driving like assholes and killing innocent motherfuckers.

Did your father ever tell you about zionists? Zionists could give a rats arse about your privacy...

[-] 1 points by joe100 (306) 12 years ago

Zionism IS VERY controversial. A word is just a word. and the same work means things to different people. Though there are exact definitions and etymology for words, the same word may mean different things to different people. Zionism is a classic example. Some people see the word as being pro-Israel. And that's not bad. It's ok to want a country to exist, regardless of one's religion or background. Other define Zionism according to its etymology from Hebrew. in that sense, Zionism suggests an Israel for Hebrews only, and that's not right. Most orthodox Jewish Hebrews do not support Zionism as Jerusalem is a city for all people.

i don't know what Zionists have to with privacy - if you mean the military checks you out... Well it's a pretty volatile area... What you do if you were policing the area?
