These guys are moving fast to hijack OWS!! This is in collusion with government to placate the OWS movement. Buying us off.

MOVEON.ORG EMAIL:

Hi Subscriber,

I wanted to make sure you saw this important petition calling for forgiveness of student loan debt—a step that's sure to do more to stimulate the economy than giving more tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations!

The petition has over 450,000 signatures so far, making it one of the fastest-growing petitions we've seen in years. Will help us get to over 500,000 signatures by signing—and then sharing it with your friends?

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=263764&id=32074-6401674-mV5CTBx&t=1

For more information, see the below email from MoveOn member Robert Applebaum, who started the petition on SignOn.org.

Thanks!

–Michael

Dear MoveOn member,

Forgiving the student loan debt of all Americans will have an immediate stimulative effect on our economy. With the stroke of the President's pen, millions of Americans would suddenly have hundreds, or in some cases, thousands of extra dollars in their pockets each and every month to spend on ailing sectors of the economy.

As consumer spending increases, businesses will begin to hire, jobs will be created, and a new era of innovation, entrepreneurship, and prosperity will be ushered in for all. A rising tide does, in fact, lift all boats—forgiving student loan debt, rather than tax cuts for corporations, millionaires and billionaires, has a MUCH greater chance of helping to raise that tide in a MUCH shorter time-frame.

The future economic success of this country is wholly dependent upon a well-educated, prosperous middle class. Instead of saddling entire generations with debt from which there is no escape, let's empower the American people to grow this economy on their own!

That's why I created a petition on SignOn.org, calling on President Obama and Congress to support legislation seeking student loan forgiveness as a means of economic stimulus.

Will you sign the petition? Click here to add your name, and then pass it along to your friends:

Yeah, I dont get it either. There are many in our movement locally who dont go in for events sponsored by MoveOn....not because they dont agree but because they dont want to be seen as sponsored by MoveOn.....so.....I dont get the point.

I still don't have any income

in the grand scale of moneys I don't owe that much

just enough to tell my friend to send a chicken back when I drink hemlock

I believe they want to circulate a petition to get it on the ballet

no wait

Federal Government doesn't have petition the population can vote into law

these are advisory signatures

well that's one way to vote with ones name

but 500,000 sig is 0.16 % of the US population

What the heck are you talking about? This is really old, it was not sent out on October 17th cause I remember getting it and this has nothing to do with OWS. Epic reach, there, but FAIL.

It fell into my inbox moments before the post. It is called co-opting. Most people do not see or sense subtle political moves. Always consider that the opposition has geniuses at work--people much smarter than you.

MoveOn i s NOT the opposition. I know for a fact, I have been a MoveON member for years. This is crazy to say they are the enemy. MoveOn members have been working on economic issues for years--many many years. Seriously, stop being so negative and focus on the real enemy we all share: Wall Street and the big corporations.

I have been a Moveon member for years. They SUCK! Perfect example of tripe. Typical liberal bullshit, they are the communist arm of the 1% underground. No two ways about it. I have been paying attention since I was born. Get out of my way propaganda. Wall Street (T) needs regulated out of existence. Why do we need them to trade stuff? Geesh. Moveon VERY skillfully guides you off the path.

[-] 1 points by RockChick (6) 12 years ago

Great if you think they suck, but I don't. Here's the difference between us: I WOULD NEVER TELL YOU TO STAY OUT OF OWS. You are the very thing you claim to be against. You are acting like a total fascist. MoveOn is totally for regulating Wall Street, always has been, and has been fighting for real reform for years. if you don't know that, then you are not a MoveOn member and you're a big fake. MoveOn has never guided me off or on any path. They provide a way to get involved if you agree with them, and I happen to agree with them, just like I agree with OWS cause they want the exact same thing.

I don't understand. This doesn't even mention OWS. Are you opposed because MoveOn agrees with OWS on the issue of student loans? Is it because it suggests petitioning the government? I figure, the more support the better. What am I missing here?

There is zero chance that Congress would pass a law forgiving student loan debt and MoveOn knows it. The best we could hope for is to restore the ability to discharge the debt in bankruptcy.

As I see it, MoveOn passes around a petition for pie in the sky to make it appear that they care about this issue. Some people are suckered in by petitions and lip service in lieu of results. The petition is an attempt to seduce students with a heavy debt load into thinking that the Dems will really do something for them, (despite the recent dismal record of most Dems), and so they will vote for them again. I think the Dems hope people will stop protesting and working for real change because they think MoveOn has their backs. If that were to happen we would only be disappointed once again.

oh, so that's what happened. I guess you know what MoveOn is and isn't huh? Did you know that ANY MoveOn member can start a petition, like this one? that it is an open forum to do so? You think the MoveOn leadership started this petition, but you're wrong. You obviously don't even know how MoveOn is set up. So you're ignorant and divisive. You really should get real, and you should start by only talking about shit when you know what you're talking about.

I certainly have felt frustrated with repeated petitions to Dems in congress who nevertheless do nothing that their supporters request, such as forgiving student loans. You talk about "working for real change". What do you envision when you use that phrase?
