Forum Post: Monsanto and GMO Monsters Out to Corrupt Labels

Posted 12 years ago on Feb. 22, 2012, 1:49 p.m. EST by HitGirl (2263)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

This is about your right to know what you're buying at the market. This is about your right to know what you're feeding your child. This is about corporations trying to take away your rights!

Don't let it happen! Insist that GMO foods are labeled.

The FDA is accepting public comment right now.

In October 2011, the Just Label It campaign was formed when the Center for Food Safety filed a petition with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to require the labeling of all foods produced using genetic engineering. Days later, we asked citizens from around the country to join us and tell the FDA to "Just Label It."

Send the FDA a message through this link...

Thanks for the link - signed it - please watch The Future of Food to anyone who thinks this is a non-essential issue - the rabbit hole on this goes deep and flips your perception of the type of country we now live in - one where you can't even trust the food you eat and where seeds are being patented and spread across fields without small farmers knowledge then the small farmers are sued for patent infringement by these horrid monopolies that seek to control the entire food market and don't care if they poison people in the process because we and our children are just the casualties of profitable business.

Thanks for the unity. I'll check out The Future of Food.

selective breeding has been going on since farming

[-] 1 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

They have more sophisticated methods now. Genetic modification is not the same as cross-breeding.

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

it's a lot more selective in getting the traits a breeder is after

[-] 1 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

I'm sure some genetic modifications are completely safe, but you have to wonder about what the effect on existing ecosystems will be in addition to changes that aren't intended in a product. Right now I would not feel comfortable sitting down to steaming plate of the modified double-size Salmon. In addition, with a corporate mandate for profit instead of public responsibility, many people don't trust them.

Genetic modification actually changes the gene structure of the plant - they use either radiation, virus like e coli, or shoot gold particles to get the DNA molecules past the cell wall of the plant which is its immune defense system then they insert things like pesticides, suicide gene-meaning the plant won't reproduce itself, and plastics etc. into the genetic structure. When our bodies use the plant for food to create our own cells these inserted genes can reproduce themselves in our own bodies because they are so unstable. No one knows what the consequences of this could be Autism could be an example as could the growing emergence of e-coli contagion, and who knows what else. The worst part of this is that they are changing the plants structure so they will not grow without the pesticides - they call this round up ready seed, and it's been modified to contain pesticide in it and creating a pesticide treadmill since the plants won't grow without it. When the wind blows it carries the seed into other farmers fields. Science can be a wonder but in this case it's a garish nightmare. The patenting of life was once deemed immoral and forbidden.

Very articulate. I agree. Immoral and forbidden seems to be reserved for human sexuality these days. I think we need a good GMO horror movie before we start living one. I'm glad you're on the case, elf3.

caution with new materials is always warranted

food is necessary for health

Done. Thanks, HitGirl.

Knew would be in there, swinging.

[-] 1 points by ineptcongress (648) 12 years ago

the results will probably be scary. i think a great many vegetables and fruits are GE--including navel oranges, and the tomatoes in the salsa i just ate. one will need to check out the clever ways the food industry gets around this.

Thanks for posting this. While i do want labels, id prefer to not have GMOs. There is enough evidence pointing to some very real long and short term problems for people and the environment.

[-] 1 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

Agreed. They just want to bring this stuff to market without us being any the wiser because it's cheaper. They're putting profit before public health.

[-] 1 points by Faithntruth (997) 12 years ago

Its the profit they make by selling seed every year instead of farmers saving seed from year to year. It is why they are so intent on prosecuting any farmer to whose farm their seed has inadvertently spread, or suffered pollination by GMO crops from upwind. They are evil.

[-] 1 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

That's why they don't want labels. They know we won't eat their canned profit.

[-] 1 points by Faithntruth (997) 12 years ago

I just do not eat anything made with corn or soy, and I buy organic sugar.

Done.

Thank you for the link I signed it and added my 2 cents to the comment as well: It is gene engineered wheat that many people can not digest properly are even allergic to it, there is something wrong with the gluten. So please require prominent and highly visible labeling.

Then I posted it on my Facebook page ( the link ) http://justlabelit.org/takeaction

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in common cause direct action.

Sharing has always been good and uniting is the only way to win. Love your enthusiasm ;)

[-] -3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 12 years ago

It is easy to be enthusiastic about pro-action. It is a heartwarming thing to see and take part in..

[-] 2 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

It's our government and our tax dollars and we should be letting them know what we want as often as we can. And, besides, it's cool to send a letter off the FDA about something important.

[+] -4 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 12 years ago

Yes it is. I am going to look for or perhaps author something about banning dye in foods and drinks. They add nothing of value and can be life threatening. The only value would be visual appeal and I believe that we really don't need that over good health.

[-] 2 points by HitGirl (2263) 12 years ago

There are some create petition sites that would be good for that.

Here is a start from change: On red food dye.

Yep. That is where I will look 1st; create, care2 & others I can't pull out of my noggin at the moment.
