Forum Post: Millions of people!

I'm sure that there are a lot of folks in OWS but think about all the millions of folks that went out and bought on Black Friday! And all the millions that are buying stuff on Cyber Monday! In other words, you folks are still a very tiny group. If it comes between you and a 47 in Vizio flatscreen, the TV will win out. I also went to two large media news sites and the only thing they are writing about is the LA evictions. You must wear suits and change your image and go on TV morning shows with a leader. Tents just do not make it.

the people that have been conditioned, to think that things can gain them happiness- (like you) have no interest with fighting for their rights- or becoming free. or fighting for the rights for the future of humanity- Most Americans are still greedy little bastards-- except for strange people like me- ows is composed of very smart, educated young people-- training web page http://vgdhi.cjb.net thrasymaque

You got it wrong. I do not have everything. I have great credit because I don't buy if I do not have the money to pay for stuff. Also, I am happy. Most folks I know are happy. I don't even have a smart phone for $70 a month. Most kids I know do who have nothing do to twitter and facebook.

I'd replace "Most Americans are still greedy little bastards" with "Some Americans are still greedy little bastards".

[-] 1 points by thraysmaque (10) 12 years ago

i agree- you are correct- only some Americans are greedy little bastards- the vast majority of Americans, are a wonderful people- please except my apology- training web page http://tinyurl.com/7rvpv43 thrasymaque

Intelligence and education are possessed by people of all ages. Wisdom, however, is not. Most of the posters on this forum are acting out like teenagers who know better than their parents. The self-aggrandizing mini-manifesto posts about subjects which have been repudiated by history demonstrate little wisdom

a human's ( his essences) is the sum total of his beliefs- he is in fact what he believes- if someone says something different then what he believes- then his survival is threatened- he will close his ears, eyes, mind and open his mouth- some human posses the wisdom to realize that most of what they know, can't be true- and the more knowledge they posses the more they realize how little they really understand. i have a lot of knowledge, but i know nothing. training web page http://tinyurl.com/7rvpv43 thrasymaque

Would you mind elaborating a bit on which groups you're referring to? If you're talking about the anarchists, communists, tinfoil hat people, anti-Semites, or fools posting while high off their asses then I agree with you. I don't want this to become a forum for them to spout crap; that's what /b/ is for. Now, if you're merely lumping everyone who stands with OWS into one of the above categories then I have a real problem with that.

"Must wear suits"...

The concept of wearing a suit makes one instantly respectable? Yet the very facts are that the man in a suit carrying a briefcase can steal more than all the thieves in the world can at gun point.

So OWS must wear suits?

Yet these are working people, many working people wear blue jeans, boots, light or heavy jackets as weather dictates, some wear hats, some don't, some wear helmets.

You'd have people represent themselves as something they are not?

Some come to Occupy from jobs, wearing the same clothes they wore to work in that day, some come to Occupy from home, wearing the same clothes they'd wear if they had stayed at home...they are representing themselves honestly.

I, for one, have no problem with honesty.

All I am saying is that we see the news. We do not hear what you want. You need to be on 20 20 or 60 minutes. Otherwise, you are just sitting in a tent downtown.

Actually you appear to miss the grievances that have been on so many signs. End corporate personhood, reinstate Glass/Steagall, campaign finance reform are three I have seen on many signs.

There are a great many issues that are promoted by groups within the OWS, yet those three seem to be the core from which other resolutions may find a solution.

Too many people take a sound bite as representative of a whole, yet a sound bite can be manipulated to translate into just about anything other than what it originally meant. Many news crews are looking for a certain type of sound bite, interviewing many people until they find what they are seeking.

Assume a sound bite that gives the impression that OWS doesn't know what it wants is desired. Then ask people until you find someone who says, I don't know. It won't matter how many others have given a listing of grievances, it only matters that the desired response as been received. Then it gets presented on the evening news.

The major problem seems to be one of communication, the question asks "What are your demands?" Yet OWS hasn't made demands, doesn't have a list of demands, they have grievances for which they seek redress.

As it stands right now it's often fairly difficult for OWS to keep a healthy, nonthreatening presence in the media, and I feel like it's costing them a great deal in terms of public opinion and respect. It's already been stated here several times that the mainstream media has a nasty habit of going straight for the sensation, often at the expense of the truth. In our case, this means interviewing the most controversial people they can find. When you watch the footage of protests and the only people you see are idiots, anarchists, communists, tinfoil hat people, or high off their asses you're not going to think much of what you see and you're not going to be particularly happy with the movement in general. This is what's hurting us with ordinary Americans; they don't see that many of us that they can empathize with.

We can change that if we stand up and take control of the image we present to the world and the image of us the media presents to the world. I already suggested creating a PR workgroup composed almost completely of moderates and responsible for giving interviews, going on talk shows, etc. to promote us. The idea would be for OWS to shell out a couple of hundred bucks per member for a suit, a shave, and a haircut, and to require the members of the group to abstain from drugs and heavy drinking while involved. Essentially, if the face of the movement is clean, sober, articulate, clean-cut, and ideally comprised of people who were laid off of blue-collar jobs then it would be far easier for us to get support. If people felt it necessary to put checks on the PR workgroup it would always be possible to staff it on a rotating basis.

Glad you like it; if anyone here is part of a GA they should seriously consider looking at it.

Yes, so many people are afraid think for themselves, they are used to being told what to do. The idea of a leaderless movement completely baffles them. Having been conditioned from a very early age to obey. Basically, they will follow along with whatever they think everyone else is doing.

[-] 1 points by mandodod (144) 12 years ago

But you need a leader. Average people still do not know what you are about. No one going on TV to talk about your cause, We see just non working folk who do not shave in tents. I think it is good to protest but you need to find a better way to do it. All we see on TV is you folks being evicted. Or tents being pulled down. Also, most of us work so it does not look good that you camp out for 30 days at a time.

"All we see on TV is.." The simple solution is to Kill your television. It does not provide enough nutrients for proper brain function. Why ask TV what you should think, do, say, and believe?
