Netflix screwed the pooch. They jacked up their prices, against better advice and they lost 800,000 subscribers in weeks, and the stock is down 54% from it's high in June of 2011 because of it. Netflix is wounded and scared so it is time to pounce.

Even if you love Netflix, we can flex the muscle of numbers so fast that Wall St. won't see it coming. Cancel your subscription and pass on the word. By my amateur math, 3 Million lost subscriptions will cripple the company cash flow, destroy the market value, and make a HUGE statement - Don't fuck with us - we will cut you by the Millions.

This is not about shorting Netflix stock, it is about the statement.

Actually, shorting Netflix stock IS the message here; if we tank them hard enough investors may begin pulling their money out, forcing the company to shut down.Their profit margin on streamers is already really low; if we tank that too they'll most likely go out of business. It would definitely be a nice message to send to the rest of corporate America: make as much money as you want fairly, but screw with the American people and you'll regret it.

They switched their position back recently, though, with all the push back?

Some people in this movement are so misguided. This reminds me of the Monty Python Holy Grail movie where the townsfolk claim a woman is a witch because they dressed her up "a bit". Stay focused people.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NETFLIX - It is about a vulnerable publicly traded company, jesus fucking christ. OccupyWallSt is a platform for promoting #killnetflix - while I support Occupy, I'm just using the momentum to promote my movement. Stay focused on what? Occupy needs a milestone, it has only accomplished noise to this point, fucking do something

This is ridiculous, Netflix is still a great deal.

The people whining about it are a bunch of whiners.

I really do think you just want to short the stock.

[-] 1 points by the55 (22) 12 years ago

Again, it is not about the Netflix business model or that they raised their prices. It is about a vulnerable company that is ripe for a huge fall out. I don't have the money to short the stock, my money is goes to bills and beer. I'm just a pissed off American, with a great job in banking, that still gives a shit about other people.

Netflix has no competitive advantage other than that they are Netflix. If they are taken out, a competitor will step in.

Corporations must fear their customers.

Yeah, lets drive all of those people out of jobs because we are mad...about something. Did NetFlix create the housing bubble? Did NetFlix participate in the securities market? Is NetFlix a major trader on the futures market? So why would you take out your "rage" on a company that had nothing to do with the collapse or the corruption in DC unless you are either ignorant or just anti-capitalist.

[-] 1 points by the55 (22) 12 years ago

Paradigm shift - the only reason it is Netflix is that they are vulnerable. Washington only cares if you have money OR if you have the power to take it away from them. This is the way to prove that the masses can collaborate to change markets. You're the ignorant one. Can you explain to me what the "futures market" is, as you put it, and how your question makes any sense at all???

I love the idea of targeting particular companies and showing that American consumer's can collectively flex their muscles and make a crushing impact to these companies and their investors. I just cancelled my Netflix membership and I will also close my B of A account on November 5th. Don't feel guilty about this! The right has been promoting corporate Darwinism for decades. Companies that don't treat their employees well, that export their jobs overseas and that take massive profits without ensuring value to the general population will go away - if we vote with our wallets and stay coordinated. Let me say this about solidarity, I'm the President of a $100M company that is owned by a Private Equity firm and I can tell you first hand that profits always come before people. The only way to stop this is to create consequences for companies that don't do the right thing. Overtime this will empower people, voters and our elected officials. Jump on board this is good stuff!

I agree that profits always come before people, and not just as a hackneyed statement; it is the truth. I prefer to target publicly traded companies because it causes the most unexpected pain to the investors. I also believe that once the Instant Boycott is established as a legitimate giant killer, Open Book accounting can be demanded to ensure sustainability. New companies employing Open Book accounting will thrive because consumers will know where their dollar goes.

Yeah, let's drive unemployment up, force companies to send more jobs overseas all because you don't like the fact that businesses exist to make a profit. Why would anyone start a business other than to make a profit? That is what trade is; I create a product you want or need and you pay me a bit more than it cost me so that I can invest in my company to make more of those products and to expand. If you destroy the customer base, you guarantee that I go out of business and not only lose all of the jobs that I have created, but also ensured that my firm will never be able to create more jobs in the future. You are just as bad as those who took advantage of the system, or maybe worse. Those who took advantage of the system just wanted to make more, no matter who it cost, while you are willingly trying to put people out of work to fulfill your twisted sense of justice.

I cancelled my subscription. Most of the available movies are not worth viewing anyways.

[-] 1 points by the55 (22) 12 years ago

Investors WILL pull their money out, there is no question, they will have no choice. The next target will solidify a right to demand fair profit, and then "fair profit" can be defined by the masses.

[-] 0 points by jay1975 (428) 12 years ago

NetFlix also posted their largest profits this year since changing their plans. Shutting down a DVD/digital movie service will not show Wall Street anything. NetFlix is small potatoes compared to the real money powers. Does NetFlix lobby Congress and have enough sway to drive legislation? So the movement is going from getting money out of DC (where the protests should be) to now wanting to shut down NetFlix because they made a boneheaded business decision? And you wonder why the movement isn't going anywhere.

[-] 1 points by the55 (22) 12 years ago

It will show that it is possible and it will create a sense of accomplishment for being heard, measured in real $'s; bigger companies to kill later as the "Instant Boycott" movement takes shape.

This is not because of a bad business decision, it is taking advantage of a wounded company.

[-] 0 points by jay1975 (428) 12 years ago

It doesn't matter as DC has already shown that they will do anything and everything to save those firms deemed "worthy" of our tax dollars. If a large portion of BoA customers close their accounts on Nov 5th, DC will be right there to hold their hand and give them more of our money. These protests need to be in DC where the problems originate, otherwise they are wasting their time and voice.

[-] 1 points by the55 (22) 12 years ago

You are wasting your time in DC! They don't listen unless you have Money or you have the ability to TAKE MONEY AWAY! Yes, there will be bailouts, but if the people can show that disagreeing with a bailout that comes to fruition results in a crippling Instant Boycott, we have effectively Vetoed the bailout. Nothing beats the power of numbers and the buying power that they wield, nothing...

[-] 0 points by jay1975 (428) 12 years ago

The sad fact is, you will never be able to organize enough people to have an effective boycott. We can be mad at Wall Street all day long, but they are only doing what the government has either allowed them to do, or forced them to do. By ignoring the role Congress has had in bringing us to where we are now, you guarantee that nothing will change. Is it because the movement is afraid of being labeled "racist" like the TEA Party was for opposing Obama, or is it that this movement is really about just being a part of the Democrats DC machine and is proving to be a distraction from the real causes of the problems today?
