Shell halts Arctic drilling after one day
LONDON, Sept 11 | Tue Sep 11, 2012 12:43pm IST
(Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell halted oil drilling in the Chukchi Sea in the Arctic on Monday just one day after starting as sea ice encroached on its drill ship, the company said in a statement.
"As a precautionary measure ... Shell has made the decision to temporarily move off the Burger-A well to avoid potentially encroaching sea ice," it said.
"Once the ice moves on, the Noble Discoverer (drilling ship) will re-connect to anchors and continue drilling."
Shell won a temporary permit to operate its drilling rig offshore Alaska just days ago. It has spent about $4.5 billion on its effort to drill Arctic oil, but has run into regulatory problems.
On Thursday the Department of the Interior allowed Shell to begin some "limited" drilling in the offshore Chukchi region, that is only navigable for a few months a year.
The company is still waiting for its oil-spill containment barge, the Arctic Challenger, to be approved by the Coast Guard. Without the containment system, the Department of the Interior said it would not allow Shell to proceed.
In light of the delays, Shell has asked the government to extend its oil drilling season beyond the Sept. 24 deadline.
So shifting Ice, is actually the planet "attacking" oil rigs.
Okay.. So then it's logical to say that hurricanes killing black folk in New Orleans is a message to liberals, the Earth hates blacks.
cuckoo cuckoo
Well obviously I wasn't serious about the planet attacking big oil (although it should). But to mention such a racist idea is so hateful. You know there were white people also in the path of Katrina.
Do you think that hurricanes and tornadoes also go after pro homosexual towns like Falwell and Robertson think.?
They think they are Gods!---LOL!
The Ice gods cometh!
They must be planning on living in luxurious bunkers underground, living on stored food. That is what they plan to leave behind for their grandchildren.Sorry-even the most luxurious bunker will become squalid in less than a year, and even the finest delicacies are disgusting when they come out of a can. Then there is the whole issue of large numbers of servants living in way crappier bunkers just a few feet away-the whole thing is beyond ridiculous!
It is. That's not the world I want for my child. It will not happen because we are gonna force change.
(Ahem)You are correct,sir!
We better. We can't allow our planet to be ruined by our shortsighted. We gotta get everyone to stop using so much energy.
Cutting back usage is the best thing we can do. And fight against big oil/gas of course.
(Ahem) I would agree with you, sir!

It's all been figured out. Here's the plan.
You have just caused a huge outburst of laughter that sounded something like this:LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL...
Sounds like a 'B' movie no?
Earth, in all its splendor, supports us, supplies us with everything we need to survive, is very patient and takes her time by letting us make all these damned foolish mistakes by abusing HER, desecrating her, manipulating her, and trying to deceive her and then......WHAMMO....She cries.......ENOUGH!!!!
"Domesticated violence".....personified!
Well like a good son/daughter who has forgotten moms b'day, or a husband who has wronged his wife, we better get with the program and make things right fast.
Or she will kick us out!
Exactly.....she is tired of the fleas!
Woof! We deserve everything we get.
I know! People don't want to take responsibility for anything...not even their own lives!.
A bunch of whoosies!
If every one (in the west especially) would cut their energy use we would accomplish more pollution reduction, faster, than any green tech implementation.
We can't do it. We are incapable of sacrificing even a little. Selfish, well developed sense of entitlement, weak, shortsighted, greedy, & lazy!
But let me let you how I really feel.
So, is there a possibility, which I heard when I was younger, that there could be such a thing as a major revolt by the Earth, to re-balance itself?
Is human nature that egotistical to believe that we are more important than the foundation we stand upon? Do we believe that the Earth has less inclination to save itself, than us? Just wondering at the immensity of it all!
It is immense.
I think we ARE egotistical enough, yes. And I think we are watching the Earth in revolt, rebalancing itself.
We will survive, but not unscathed. How much pain & suffering depends on how well we get beyond our egotism, to improve our use of our home.
Wonderful food for thought! Thank you....
Thank YOU!
