Forum Post: IRC Channel #occupywallst recent bans

This content is user submitted and not an official statement

Since perm-banning for opinions is becoming a daily activity in the irc channel, I've decided to start cataloging the incidences. If you have any logs to add, let me know.

Eventually someone will listen. If we can't have freedom of speech in our own forums, we'll never have a chance at fighting for it as a movement.

more to come, surely!!

This forum is not owned nor operated by any government or public interest that would afford you such rights. You are communicating on a privately held server, operated voluntarily, and with the caveat that you follow the rules that are clearly posted everywhere you look on this forum.

correct, and no where in any of those logs is there any indication of breaking any rules.

The reason I am banned is because the people who happen to be in power take issue with me defending Israel in debates. Their reason for the ban is that I am a paid shill (hasbarian, they call it) for the Israeli government and I'm paid $2000 to be in the channel to spread misinformation. Pray tell, which rule covers that?

This is about facism in the administration corners of OWS.

The IRC Channel is on Freenode. These admins are not paying for it, nor is it their private channel. It is the official channel of this website and movement.

All you're telling me is that this behavior is acceptable within the movement.

So is it?

you feel strongly about palistine go to palistine chat or actually go there. i'm sick of overseas shit when at home (us) we have domestic issues to solve. i wish i was a moderator and then i could kickbann you also so you don't disrupt every convo about palistine.

interesting you should say that.

  1. Your post is very indicative of the attitude of the moderators currently running the irc channel.
  2. Your post has the same kind of knee-jerk emotional reaction to a topic that causes a ban to happen. Very well illustrated. "you brought up a topic I'm sick of hearing so I'm going to permanently ban you.
  3. Your claim that I am talking about 'palistine' when I am not.
  4. I never brought up any of the issues that got me banned. They were brought up by the moderators and I got banned for joining the conversation and defending israel.

Someone help me understand this. Is this kind of behavior acceptable or standard for administration positions in this movement?

No one? Absolutely NO one has a problem with this?
