Forum Post: International Monetary Fund strongly suggests countries tax the rich to fix deficit

Tax the rich and better target the multinationals: The IMF has set off shockwaves this week in Washington by suggesting countries fight budget deficits by raising taxes.

Tucked inside a report on public debt, the new tack was mostly eclipsed by worries about the US budget crisis, but did not escape the notice of experts and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

“We had to read it twice to be sure we had really understood it,” said Nicolas Mombrial, the head of Oxfam in Washington. “It’s rare that IMF proposals are so surprising.”

It's been a nail-biter of a week, but last night Congress finally made a deal that will re-open the government and keep the nation from defaulting on its debts.

That's the good news. The bad news is it sets up several more rounds of budget talks that could mean cuts to your Medicare and Social Security benefits.

I'm already hearing reports about trading cuts to your benefits to pay for other government spending.

After all the debt ceiling drama, I want to know: How confident are you that your members of Congress will reject efforts to cut your hard-earned benefits?

Very

Somewhat

A little

Not at all

All the back and forth to get to this deal has practically given me whiplash, but here's how it will work:

This new deal calls for a congressional budget committee to reach an agreement on a budget framework by December 13. That committee will take its recommendations to the rest of Congress, but the rubber meets the road when government funding expires again on January 15.

What do all these deadlines mean for you? Some politicians want to cut your earned benefits to replace across the board cuts in government spending made as a result of the so-called sequester. Others want to cut your benefits to reduce the deficit. Whether it's cuts to your benefits to reduce the deficit or to pay for other government spending, you deserve better than Washington politicians bargaining away your hard-earned benefits.

So take a minute to let me know what you think will happen next, and I'll be reaching out to you over the coming weeks with more ways you can take action to prevent the budget committee from cutting your benefits.

Thanks for letting us know what you think.

Sincerely,

Any future negotiations in Congress should be addressing raising taxes on the wealthy - wealthy people and corp(se)oRATions. Ending fossil fuel subsidies and taxing wallstreet transactions.

LAGARDE: But creative accounting is not the solution. And markets know that. The counterparts to the United States know that. And when you are the largest economy in the world, when you are the safe haven in all circumstances, as has been the case, you can’t go into that creating accounting business. You have to honor your signature, you have to give certainty to the rest of the world, and you have to make sure that your own economy is consolidating that welcome recovery that we have seen in the last few days because it impacts the entire economy.

Of course not.

"You have to honor your signature"

Like the truth, honor doesn't much matter to the (R)epelican'ts these days.

Misplaced pride and bull goose loony they have an overabundance of.

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

They aren't big on truth. It's a bunch of bullshit.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

Well of course.

You did notice the return of Ms. Palin.

And the increased media notice of Ms. Bachmann.

As if Cruze and Paul aren't enough.

100% pure bullshit.

Uh, ya and how they hijacked the protest. Idiots.

The party that cut all it's benefits, now thinks it can use it, to further cut it's benefits???

I'd be mad as hell too!

I don't think these folks fathom how much they are despised. I don't think they quite get it.

But, they will.

These guys still like them a lot.

http://www.politicususa.com/2013/10/13/republicans-impress-kochs-harming-nation-government-shutdown.html

And don't forget what's still ongoing in the various States.

It never ceases to amaze me how little attention that actually gets.

The last thread on Detroit fell like a rock.

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

Well, that is going to be the kicker as the state governors are trying to distance themselves to save their own asses and much of the media is desperately trying to pretend that this is separate. But, when you look at the states responses then you realize it is the same shit.

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

I tried to warn people, that they would bring what's happening to Detroit to other cities.

Don't look now, but they are on the brink of bringing it not just to the Nation but, unto the World.

And just think........it was the (R)epelican'ts that brought on the last crash.

Isn't Occupy against the whole system? What's the point of picking on particular parties. They're all bad!

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

Some's just worse than others.

I'm surprised you didn't notice.

The other thing you didn't notice, is that I pointed out certain deluded individuals. It good though, that you notice they belong to a particularly egregious "party".

If they are all equally bad, please show another party that's as nuts as those that I mentioned.

You see........it's not the party........it's a bunch of fucked up lying conse(R)vatives and libe(R)tarians.

[-] -2 points by jamesDee (-6) 10 years ago

You misunderstand. I never said all parties were equally bad. Some are more rotten than others, granted, but the system makes it so that everyone is rotten to a certain degree. The political system is like a machine that generates rotten apples, some might be more rotten than others, but they are all rotten.

Occupy is about trying to replace the system so rotten apples aren't generated automatically. It has a much deeper goal than yours.

It's OK to aim for the lesser evil, the least rotten apple. That's a game you can play within the political system. It's just that Occupy is much more than that. Occupy fights from outside the system in order to change it completely.

Your fight for the lesser evil would make more sense in the traditional political arena. Perhaps you should start a political party, or push for one you support?

Your fight for the lesser evil undermines Occupy. Occupy doesn't care for the lesser evil, it wants to eradicate all evil.

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

Hmmmm.

If you think they're all bad, and they are made up completely of us, then one must conclude that you believe that you are intrinsically bad.

I don't buy that.

Although, that may be true in your case, it's not true for all of us.

Then you blend in religious concepts, like evil.

Blah..................pointless drivel.

You see, I name names and call it as I see it.

You don't.

You completely avoid doing that........there's nothing of applicable value in what you say.

Time.........as they say.........is of the essence.

We will change little, with any expediency, by waiting for conditions to allow us to completely incorporate a new and different "system". If we could do that at all under those conditions.

We........as they also say..........Are the "system".

Therefore we are in no way outside of it.

You may live under a rock and eat fallen oak leaves.......I do not.

Like it or not...........that's an accurate appraisal.

So why are you so damnably afraid of it?

.

[-] -3 points by jamesDee (-6) 10 years ago

If you don't think the system is broken, that it automatically generates bad politics, then you have no relevance in regards to Occupy. You're an "inside the system" player, and those people should start their own political parties or clearly support one. Your position is antithetical to Occupy's, so why spend time here?

If you think they're all bad, and they are made up completely of us, then one must conclude that you believe that you are intrinsically bad.

Your analysis is off, because not anyone can become a politician, especially one with a lot of power. The system is made so that those who don't become corrupt are not accepted in. An honest person could not become President in US. Impossible. The system does not permit it.

The system is not made up of all of us like you believe, it's made to promote those of us who are corrupted.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

So, just so we are clear. You're still trying to isolate and attack Shooz.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha,.

Teanuts roasting on an open fire.........

[-] -2 points by jamesDee (-6) 10 years ago

Not an attack. Just asking questions. Shooz is a moderator, so he's using power over others. I think it should be alright to ask him questions. You don't like debates, questions, etc...? You think we should all march in lock-step like the Korean army?

[-] 1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

Woooo hooooo!

Questions!!! Yippeee!!!

I sure do get people mad at me when I ask questions.

Let me ask you one, since I at least attempted to address most of yours.

Tit for tat being fair and all, would behoove you to answer it, at least if you are a person of honesty.

How many other nameplates have you posted here under and what where their names?

[Removed]

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

The whole Worlds broke.

We, the "system" of the World, broke it.

From here to there, we did it. From peeing in the stream, to shooting rockets at each other.

That's accurate.

Not what you said.

What is your "concern" here?

Who is it you think you're representing?

OWS??

I don't think so.

I think it's you who's corrupted here. You need to address that.

[-] -2 points by jamesDee (-6) 10 years ago

We can have different opinions, that's fine, but I don't understand why you pretend to support OWS when you don't. If you don't think the system is broken and should be changed from outside, then you're not supporting Occupy philosophy. If you think you should ban other users instead of promoting an exchange of ideas, then you don't support Occupy. So, why are you here?

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 10 years ago

I have shown unequivocally what the (R)epelican'ts have done in Michigan....

It's not a question of opinion.

You have shown to be 100% opinion, fact free, opinion.

Now I suppose this means you agree with Ms. Palins opinion.

Since that was the opinion I originally opined about.

You changed the subject, to a bunch of "concern" bullshit....

I tried to get you back on track.

To get you to make some semblance of .....sense.

It seems I failed you.

I'm sorry for that.

But I still feel that your concern trolling is a sign that it's you that's corrupted.

I'm a moderator. Not a robot. I have a very strong distaste for your baiting and concern trolling. That's my opinion.

Keep it up and I will ban you.

That's just a fact.

Now, if you actually want to discuss an issue or two, please do.

I like that sort of thing.

Was I being honest and open enough for you?

You sure haven't been for me.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 10 years ago

So, just so we are clear. You guys are getting your asses kicked and you don't want to talk about it. Would you like to meet for lunch in Englewood too?

[-] -3 points by HCHC4 (-28) 10 years ago

haha. Like thats what their plan is. Its all the same racket.

Its trick or treat on the population.

Who ya gonna call?
