First of all, I must tell you that what the people of Occupy Wall Street are experiencing with the police is what happens to Black & Brown young men in this Police State every day. My son, a college Grad, has been stopped and frisked three times on his way to work, and he only works three blocks away! So, I am plenty outraged about what’s happening downtown, because “There but for the grace of god go I.”
I cannot understand how a “Supreme Court Judge” could support the Mayors eviction of OWS from a Public Park! While their Right to Freedom of Speech may not include camping in Public, the Right to Assemble Peacefully in Public to exercise that right most certainly does!
I didn’t go to Law school, but I did graduate from UCLA (The University on The Corner of Lexington Avenue) and I can read the Constitution. And, it clearly says that the “Government Shall Make No Law that interferes with the right of the people to peacefully assemble in public.” In my view that means that no rule, regulation, statute, directive, or local ordinance can possibly supersede a Right that is the First of our Rights enshrined in our Constitution. Therefore, any directive issued by any representative of Government that interferes with OWS’s right to assemble peacefully in a public space, is unreasonable, unlawful, and unconstitutional!
In addition, The Mayor is completely wrong to use my tax dollars to unleash the police, like a regiment of Gestapo, on Americans who are exercising their Freedom of Speech. The Mayor has exchanged Brown Shirts for White Shirts but a goon squad is a goon squad no matter the color of their uniforms. While it’s nice to know that our police force can handle a riot, this protest is nowhere near a riot. And, in a time when budgets are tight, and workers are being laid off, spending money on overtime to cover this peaceful demonstration is simply unconscionable!
The Police should be doing what they are paid to do which is to protect and defend the people! They are not paid to protect and defend a Public Park! What’s next Camel Jockey’s with whips? Does someone have to stand in front of a Tank! It is disgraceful to use our cities finest to harm and harass Americans in pursuit of their constitutionally protected rights! And, it has got to stop before someone gets shot 43 times for pulling out a Cell Phone!
As a tax paying citizen of this fair burg, I believe that if one more protestor is harmed in any way for any reason, the Mayor should be impeached for violating his oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution!
