This is just one of many outdated social contracts our society depends on and must review.

This guy doesn't understand taxation.... We pay for public services, yknow, the 99% who have to work and can't take care of their kids at the same tie, so they have to do after school programs, or the working poor on welfare, or perhaps maybe the parks these "Occupants" trash. Not to mention the roads the police have to go down to try to help the Firemen who need to tap into the water lines the city had to pay for so they could put out the fire that was started in the homeless shelter that the city put up to help the homeless, so they would starve, or freeze, or so they could get access to meds from the clinic that THE GOVERNMENT had to build to improve quality of life

The ends do not justify the means. Theft is always wrong & will inevitably lead to bad results. A society in which plunder is the norm will degenerate into barbarism. Just look around you at what the US has become.

Not to mention that all the things that govt is said to be needed for can be better, more efficiently, more honestly, & less expensively be provided privately.

It'd be great if all of our taxes went to pay for the things that you just listed. Too bad the legitimate expenses of government are a tiny fraction of actual government spending. The vast majority is wasteful welfare/warfare spending that does no good to the people who pay the taxes.

When I wrote that I was thinking more on a local level, but in either case, local gets it from state, who get some from the big G and some from us. And welfare is not wasteful spending, neither is defense. If there was no defense budget, we wouldn't be nearly as powerful as we are now. I don't think we should be spending as much on wars that we start -much less starting any war with a weak enemy period- but that's where the special interests come in.

SS, Medicare, and Defense make up the vast majority of our federal budget. The rest is just a drop in the bucket.

So. Abolish SS and Medicare. Reduce the Defense budget to something less than the next ten countries combined. Problem solved.

The government already spent everyone's social security money. They are legally obligated to repay that money. To abolish it would be equivalent to the largest theft in US history.

I can get over that pretty easily if they would just find a way to get rid of it altogether.

[-] 1 points by hamalmang (722) from Lebanon, PA 12 years ago

Too bad that is not your decision to make. If you suggest that my parents who worked more than full time their entire lives and who are by law owed their social security that they have paid for should never be able to retire so some bank of america manager can collect on his derivatives than you can eat and choke on a flaming bag of dicks. Fuck you 1000%.

[-] 1 points by Daennera (765) from Griffith, IN 12 years ago

I don't recall saying that. Don't put words in people's mouths, you look foolish. I never said change the rules of the game while people are paying. You simply start phasing out and reducing benefits as new people join.

For instance, an 18 year old joining the workforce today may only receive 80% of what would be the normal benefit. 18 year olds joining the workforce ten years from now will only get 60% of what would be normal benefits.

It' not an all or nothing game, as most educated people realize. You can go through phase out periods and lessen the fallout greatly.

[-] 1 points by hamalmang (722) from Lebanon, PA 12 years ago

I said that they are obligated to pay that money and it would be theft if they didn't. Then you said that you could get over that easily as long as they get rid of it altogether.

You implied that you don't mind the government stealing trillions of dollars from working americans so long as you get what you want.

[-] 1 points by Daennera (765) from Griffith, IN 12 years ago

Correct, I personally wouldn't mind. I would find it a perfectly fine trade off to give up all the money I've paid in so far so that I may never pay another dime again. I am also perfectly aware of how much that would politically NOT fly. There is a difference between what I would be okay with and what would actually be feasible.

[-] 1 points by hamalmang (722) from Lebanon, PA 12 years ago

But you are still saying that you are ok with many millions of people being robbed of their futures and left to die. Or maybe you wouldn't want to leave them to starve or freeze to death but then there would be ridiculous increases to things like medicare/medicaid and government subsidized housing and the welfare state. I agree that people should not be forced to pay social security if they don't want or need it or they should be able to opt out of it at any time and collect what is rightfully theirs. If they don't get their benefits then social security would turn out to have been a secret tax to them and their employers for their entire lives. Some people have been paying into it for 4 or 5 decades. I apologize for my naughty words if this was just an error in communication.

[-] 1 points by Daennera (765) from Griffith, IN 12 years ago

I'm saying I would be ok with it in the sense that I would be okay with starting a phase out that said current 28 year olds would receive no benefits, current 38 year olds would get 25% benefits, etc.

It probably wouldn't fly, and that's fine too, just so long as we're doing something to get rid of this monstrous poorly designed program.

Wait till you need it....

It doesn't matter what you think is good to have or what would be good to have. What matters is what can we afford. We cannot afford to continue to spend the money we spend. That is reality. Welfare spending is mostly waste. I have more exposure to our welfare state than you do I would imagine as I work in healthcare in a poverty stricken area. Welfare is bad for poor people it is not good. Poverty increases with these social programs because it destroys people's sense of self motivation and makes them like children. It is terrible to watch. If you really want to help the poor then we need to GRADUALLY reduce welfare spending. As for defense spending I'm not talking about reducing our defense spending. I'm talking about reducing our needless military spending immediately. We do not need to have bases in Germany or South Korea. We do not need to be in wars in the Middle East. This spending will be the end of our country. Please think about this. I'm not some right wing nut or left wing wacko. I'm just looking at history and our balance sheet and we can't continue to do this.

I'm gonna have to agree to a point. When I was out of work, I needed to get welfare. I was actually there. I have first hand expierance with not only receiving it myself, but I also know people who have bilked the system because they can. As soon as I felt I was "close enough" I cut it off. Did I have some hard times?? Yup. Do I qualify to get it tomorrow because I make nothing?? You betcha. Will I?? Nope. The reason being 1. I, unlike alot of the people sitting in a park in freezing cold condition take responsibility for my situation and look for opportunities to change it. Not everyone who uses these services are out to jam the government. Welfare healthcare is only a quarter of what you can get. Now onto defense. I 100% agree that we don't need foreign outposts when we are not at war. I am one of those people who believe unless another Pearl Harbor happened, our people need to be here, and I believe a lot of them are like minded in that statement. the war on terror is a joke, you can wage war on an idea. The war on drugs is also a hole. I'm not about legalizing like Amsterdam, but something needs to be done.
