What does it mean when others can't see you forum comments and only you can see them? Is this a site glitch?

Its a form of banning people that the mods have engaged in on and off (I experienced this myself and posted a thread).

It makes you think you have not been banned because you can see the comments when you are logged in. Its an underhanded way of doing it. They usually do it if you post anything remotely critical to a story on the front page - presumably because outsiders and media look at these stories and they want to create an appearance that every one is super united.

I did find this over at NYCGA. It appears people have started to notice that occupywallstreet.org has been banning people and there has been questions about accountability and whether the site reflects the movement

http://www.nycga.net/groups/accountability-transparency/forum/topic/whats-with-the-occupywallst-org-website-are-they-accountable-in-any-form/

And I saw they are posting DNS WHOIS up to try figure out who really owns this site.

That's funny because most of the time when I come on here the forum is dominated by occupy bashing and people who never bothered to read the rules.

[-] 1 points by neizuc (52) 12 years ago

They don't ban obvious trolls and bashing - it when someone posts criticism to a front page story that the bans happen.

In fairness, it gotten a lot better in the last week.

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

Amen to that. But I don't mind critical voices. Only through dialogue can we move to consensus. I would like to be able to flag posts and/or hide threads. That would be awesome.

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

That is horrible? So who can you ask about getting unbanned. And that would make sense that they'd want to censor it but why not just delete the offending comment instead. Is the only solution to start a new account from scratch? Do they give warnings? I wonder if they'll ban this account for asking and discussing the new tactic.

[-] 1 points by neizuc (52) 12 years ago

They don't give you warnings - at least not to me. I complained in a thread (in which several others also complained) and then my ban seemed to get magically lifted.

I doubt they will ban this thread - since then it will be obvious they are banning threads for reasons other than, say, hateful language. The point of the tactic being used is so that the poster does not know they are banned initially.

yeah it's a form of oppression no different than the media

I'm sorry, what did you say?

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

Sorry I was noticing some people can't see what others posted in replies but I can. I am assuming it is bad if you are the only one who sees your comments and others cannot.

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

That would be bad. Banned?

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

So the question is how go you get unbanned? The sites a bit vague on that.

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

Interesting. That would be bad. There is no info on what it means. I was curious. I saw thrasy complaining he was getting banned but I am guessing it is not banning login just banning public comment. Thanks!

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Many times. Are you the new Thrasy?

[-] 2 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

No obviously not or I would not have asked the question. I just was wondering why I see people making multiple accounts and saying they got banned. But why make a new one if you would get banned for that one. Also I made a new account when my friend said he thought his comments were not getting published. And sure enough I can see them but he can see his own comments. I did not want to ask the question with my regular account and risk having that one banned for asking the question.

More interesting is that most of the response here like above 'girl friday', are BOTS, at any given time 90% of the monikers here the respond are BOTS, mostly ran by OWS, they're trying to fine-tune the BOTS, then license this software to other country's to manage protesters. OWS is ran by Kalle Lasn of Vancouver, BC ( canada ) he's got this same software running all over the world on CIA contract. The people here just guinea pigs to teach the BOTS how to take real protesters and create 'protest fatigue' so people not even bother. It seems to work, good people get frustrated and leave this site and quick. Anybody that has anything REAL to say is 'shadow banned', what your talking about about the fact that only the author see's his material.

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

Wait GirlFriday is a bot? Are you fricken serious?

[-] 1 points by 1169 (204) 12 years ago

sorry excuse my ignorance but what is a "bot"

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

Bots are computer programs that you can use to spam, comment, and like/dislike things. If you look at GirlFridays -points above, it was done allegedly by a Bot that Thrasy made. Basically it automatically does that you script it to do. How I have no idea. Does that help?

[-] 1 points by 1169 (204) 12 years ago

thanks that helps I tried to answer right away but my connection had trouble

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Shut up, thrasy. I'm not a bot. You moron.

[-] 2 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

And that answers that. I was going to be impressed if anyone was able to build a bot that was able to post coherently. Most chat bots are pretty obvious. They have a single tracked dialogue with minor variations based on keywords.

SEARCH ENGINE blocks are also important.

This is certainly not a "karma" user-rating issue.

Consider these forum posts:

-- Forum Post: TEST: Do your posts register on search engines?

-- Forum Post: SEARCH ENGINE TEST: a post that right wing criminals will hate

Right wing attacks are done by professionals, low-paid though they are.

Interfering with the search engines is a standard attack.

Please check your own Forum Posts and comment at the "TEST: Do your posts register on search engines?" posting. Thank you.

The moderators will shadow ban you if you criticize OWS. It's especially dangerous to criticize the protest in the news articles section of this site. Having many forum characters is useful for many reasons:

  1. You can use an alternate user to post criticism in news articles.
  2. You can use one character to check if another one has been shadow banned.
  3. You can go under the radar at anytime by using a different character with a different style of writing. (I have many characters no one suspects are Thrasymaque.)
  4. You can escape stalkers by switching to another skin.
[-] 2 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

That is ridiculous? Why would moderators do that? So basically if you don't agree with something posted in a News Article you risk getting banned? Do you think the media actually cares what people post here?

Who can my friend talk to about getting his ban lifted? I am glad I am not using my personal account because I'd be pissed to lose all my karma and start from zero again. Also, how come April who has been super critical in her posts never be banned?

[-] -1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

DJStarDust is Thrasy. He has been banned several times and has a good 15 accounts. It doesn't have anything to do with criticism. It has to be because he is a known troll.

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

Thanks for the info. I generally don't believe in censorship. If you have the ability to like or dislike something you can promote consensus filtering by the group at large. Freedom of speech is one of the things the Occupy movement is all about. It's ironic we see moderators doing this shadow banning.

Although I just saw that you got -16. Which is what happens when someone uses all their accounts I guess.

[-] 1 points by dickheadgates (21) 12 years ago

So is RebelRebel. He's having a conversation with himself. Seems like masturbation to me.

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

I guess I would it I was banned and didn't realize it. I would wonder why nobody was replying like friend did.

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

I thought so. But that is good to know. You thrasy as well?

[-] 1 points by RebelRebel (25) 12 years ago

So this is what you meant earlier. Got it I can see my previous comment about like and dislike things is pretty much pointless.
