I just don't understand why the police were called in by the UC because kids were sitting on the sidewalk. Why do schools and cities keep putting the police in these situations?

Let them sit there. People can walk around them if they are not in a wheelchair. My guess is they would move for someone in a wheelchair.

If they were totally blocking access to the school however then they deserve the peppa spray. The right to assemble does not usurp other’s right to education. Especially when the cost is so high.

It did not appear to me that they were totally blocking access. It is hard to tell from the video.

I have several thoughts on this but primarily the administrators are trying to prevent having a negative image cast on their schools by allowing tents and unsanitary conditions that DO develop over a period of time. They try to prevent a circus but instead they create an incident of perceptive martyrdom by those sympathetic to protesters.

The police were there to stop the formation of an encampment. I don't believe that the UC Davis Chancellor ordered a pepper spraying in this instance and that the cop took it upon himself to exert control in such a callous manner. They may have authorized the use if circumstances warranted it but it wasn't a directive.

The cost of these confrontations and the negative publicity cast on the school as a result shows that it would be a lot more effective just to work with the protesters and ensure that sanitation is adequate and that mischief is kept to a minimum.

The police just love to have their picture taken...here's one for this cop's family album...Gosh I'll bet his kids are really proud of him.

I watched a program on “Democracy Now” yesterday. There were both activists and police leadership from several cities. The police absolutely do not want to be in these situations. They are looking for ways to improve these confrontations. Some of the rules of engagement need to be updated or clarified. Pepper spray is the proper method of disbursing a crowd. It hurts like a bitch but it is not lethal.

The question I have is why were the police called in and ordered to disburse the crowd?

that police officer (who sprayed) was not looking for ways to improve confrontation. He acted with disdain and relish. He is a bigot.

I repeat. The question I have is why were the police called in and ordered to disburse the crowd?

Fear?

It's psy ops. The 1% wants the general public to fear what might happen to them if they speak out or complain. The 1% is making example of them.

Democracy Now is a fraud. It's linked to corporate foundations and the CIA.

Say what you want about "Democracy Now" they are probly more pro OWS than any media outlet that exists. The point is there were actual protesters and police on the show who were telling their stories. One was a judge that was pushed up against the wall. The second was an elderly woman who was pepper sprayed.

I am not sure where you get the idea that this organization has ties to the CIA.

They constantly play the race card at Democracy Now. It's their purpose to divide and conquer Americans. In addition, they are completely against 9/11 truth and insist that the Bush Cheney lies about Muslims doing it are true. They are funded by corporate foundations that are linked to the CIA.

Much better is Russia Today.
