Forum Post: How to get a mainstream nationwide POLL?

The Tea Party wasn't much better at defining itself than we are. I clearly remember it being seen as amorphous hatred of Obama until national polling data of Tea Party supporters was superimposed on the video-montages of nutjobs in tri-corner hats.

How does OWS convince the corporate media to do similiar polls of OWS sympathizers and supporters?

People want to know what the movement is about? Ask the sympathizers and supporters all around the country. Here are some sample questions that might be asked:

1.) Are you part of the Occupy movement? 1 - Strongly Agree ... 5 - Strongly Disagree

2.) Do you support the Occupy Movement? 1 - Strongly Agree ... 5 - Strongly Disagree

3.) We should increase the top marginal tax rate to Eisenhower levels: 1 - Strongly Agree ... 5 - Strongly Disagree

4.) We should institute 100% campaign funding and outlaw any private contribution to political campaign: 1 - Strongly Agree ... 5 - Strongly Disagree

5.) We should amend the Constitution to revoke corporate personhood or somehow legislatively address the Citizens United ruling: 1 - Strongly Agree ... 5 - Strongly Disagree

6.) We should re-instate the Glass-Steagal regulations that kept the finances of regular and investment banks seperate: 1 - Strongly Agree ... 5 - Strongly Disagree

7.) We should have lobbying reform that bans all monied or in-kind, paid lobbying (whatever, something along these lines), and the revolving door between government and industry: 1 - Strongly Agree ... 5 - Strongly Disagree

Etc...

So, how do we get this done? Why hasn't Gallup, ABC/WaPo, NBC/WSJ done this already? Could it be they have a vested interest in the movement remaining nebulous (/sarcasm)?

Does anyone have an in at Quinnipiac university?

What is Quinnipiac U? Do they have the capability to do a nationwide poll that would be trusted?

[-] 1 points by cmt (1195) from Tolland, CT 12 years ago

They do a lot of serious political polling.

It is a school in my area, but often quoted in national media.

We need a shout out to anyone out there who has any inside track to Quinnipiac U. There must be someone out here, an OWS'er that attends Quinnipiac U?

Quinnipiac University. Is there a local Occupy movement near you that might have some students or faculty from Quinnipiac U?

[-] 1 points by looselyhuman (3117) 12 years ago

That would be great.

Someone usually commissions these things I think, right? My understanding is it's usually the media, which comes out of their news budget, but I could be wrong. Any insight on this?

Polling staff contacts are listed on the brochure cited in the middle of this page, if you want to ask someone:

1) 1

2) 1

3) 3 (not sure it should be that high)

4) 3 (maybe from individuals?)

5) 2 (there may some legal problems or loopholes to work out)

6) 1

7) 2

Good feedback, thanks. I'm with you. I was just tossing out some examples.

Any ideas on getting someone to actually conduct a poll like this?

We could always do this in our communities. Go door to door or get permission to stand around high traffic public areas. With it nearing Christmas, it'll be easy to get a wide gamete of people to poll. Once we get all of the data together, we assign a group (maybe certain regional Occupy) to compile the data, and then present it to all Occupy sites, youtube, facebook, twitter, and send it to all the news organizations. Both national and foreign. We can even ask our foreign brothers and sisters to do the same for their region.

I know it sounds like a lot of work, but we do need to take that extra step forward to further advance and strengthen this movement and I think Loosely's idea is fantastic.

Its a good idea, for OWS internal purposes. I'm not sure this would provide the legitimacy that we would need for external purposes.

[-] 1 points by JonValle (133) 12 years ago

Maybe an internal poll is what we need. And said internal poll could be picked up by certain media sources.

I see where you're coming from and I do wish there was a way to make it more 'legit'.

[-] 1 points by looselyhuman (3117) 12 years ago

I think that would be a good thing, definitely. Only problem is it wouldn't be considered objective or scientific by the media, if we did it ourselves. No reason not to do it, but this professional polling is still needed IMO.

Thanks for your input.

[-] 1 points by JonValle (133) 12 years ago

What if we still do it ourselves, but have it sanctioned by a group that is authorized to do said polls. This way, we get the approval and respect without having to shell out any funds. We also get our members active.

[-] 2 points by cmt (1195) from Tolland, CT 12 years ago

No group would authorize something like that because (good reason) they couldn't be sure it was done right unless they supervised it personally and (reality bites) they have to pay their staff or they cease to exist.

[-] 1 points by JonValle (133) 12 years ago

Booooooo :P Unfortunately I did forget about those aspects.

Who needs polls anyway :) (kidding)

"The Tea Party wasn't much better at defining itself than we are."

This is a hilarious statement.
