Forum Post: How the 99% can really flex our muscles...

Businesses will continue to follow their paths until we force them to see how important we are to them. A "99% Skip Work Day" with major buy would show the 1% just how vital we are. Think along the lines of "The Day the Earth Stood Still". I propose that on April 13th, 2012 we, the 99%, flex our muscles and show how strong we truly are.

The date itself has a couple storylines one can attach to it:

  1. Friday the 13th
  2. Last business day before tax day Anyone behind me?

I am the 99%

Autumn Times, if the 99% speak together then they must stand and act together. Imagine if African Americans that were living in non-segregated parts of the United States had chosen not to support those who were. The 99% must stand as one if not for just one day.

I understand if you want to stage a walkout of an employer that you feel is hurting the country, but I, for one, think my employer is doing a great job. Does he make a lot of money as a small business owner? He does well for himself. But he does well by doing good. He charges fair prices, works with several local social service organizations, and treats his employees with understanding and fairness. Walking out on him would be against my personal ethics of hard work and justice. Why would I hurt one of my own just because you work for someone you consider the 1%?

On the other hand, I intend to start using my buying power to support businesses and corporations (because not all corporations are evil!) that I agree with, and boycotting the ones that are hurting us.

To answer your segragation example, if it were just one or two busses that made African Americans sit in the back or just one or two schools that wouldn't allow African American children to attend, then sitting in the front of the bus or registering your children as an African-American would have very little significance in and of itself. The fact that discrimation was so widespread made the actions significant.

Let us be thoughtful in our actions and reactions.

Very good rebuttal and I appreciate your reply. I guess the next line of thinking would be to ask if you feel your employer is within the 1%. If your employer is not then perhaps they would want to show support by closing shop for a day in support of those who are making a stand. I respect your ability to differentiate between good business and bad business yet I also implore you to look at the impact that could be made by an all out work stoppage.

Now I think that is a compromise worth making! :-)

marsdefIAnCe, I understand the problems that people have in skipping work but at the same time those problems will never go away. Ever.

Also, the people occupying Wall Street right now--the people who started this movement--left their jobs in order to make a stand. Without some sort of sacrifice there will be no change at all.

The other thing to keep in mind is that not all businesses are part of the 1%. In fact, most people that work for small businesses work for the 99%.

Owning a business that makes money is not bad. Using money to buy power so that you can take advantage of the everyone else is bad.

um, most of the 99% live paycheck to paycheck and a huge chunk of them have to scrimp niceties to keep gas in the car. normal people can't afford to start skipping work.

this isn't very practical, people need an end to the stealth taxation that results the private federal reserve inflating the money and overt taxation used to finance moving factories overseas
