Forum Post: Hollywood Has Turned 'Cryptofascist'

Posted 12 years ago on Nov. 25, 2011, 2:24 p.m. EST by metapolitik (1110)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

(Newser) – They say Hollywood is liberal, but in fact it's more of a right-wing propaganda machine, writes Rick Moody in the Guardian. From Schwarzenegger to Spider-Man, “the message is there: Might is right, the global economy will be restored, America is exceptional, homely people deserve political disenfranchisement, and so on.” As a result, no one should be surprised by Batman scribe Frank Miller’s recent attacks on Occupy Wall Street, writes Moody.

Miller called Occupiers “a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists,” telling them to “wake up” because “America is at war against a ruthless enemy.” Many were shocked, but really, it’s in line with Hollywood’s message. Look at the film 300, based on a Miller graphic novel. It features the Greeks, American stand-ins, who must destroy a “ruthless enemy” from the Middle East “by virtue of the moral superiority of their belief system and their unmatched courage.” In fact, Miller’s comments benefit Occupiers, because it shows that our political system “requires a mindless, propagandistic (or 'cryptofascist') storytelling medium to distract its citizenry.”

The right thinks Hollywood is left wing, the left thinks hollywood is right wing, and the middle thinks hollywood is entertainment and nothing more...

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

Unfortunately for everyone else, the extreme left or "radical center" is the only group that sees how truly right-wing the Hollywood propaganda mill is.

There may be a lot of liberals and left-leaners in Hollywood, but the real MONEY is mostly in the right-wing, pro-business, pro-corporate end of the spectrum. As are most of the decisions about what memes to propagate and what films get made.

[-] 1 points by MercD (20) from Spanaway, WA 12 years ago

Radical center? What the hell is that?

Hollywood is entertainment, you watch what entertains you or you don't...

It is not radically right wing, nor is it radically left wing. It has elements from all walks of life. There are right wing and left wing movies and documentaries, there are right wing and left wing employees in the movie industry...

These comments "Its a right wing propaganda machine" "Its controlled by Zionists" "The Jews control everything" Only serve to make us and this movement look like wing-nuts to outside world.

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

You should try watching less television and reading more:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radical_center_%28politics%29

[-] 1 points by MercD (20) from Spanaway, WA 12 years ago

So the radical center means the center of the political spectrum... how does that make the extreme left the radical center?

However I love how you start to insult rather then argue a point... again, making the OWS movement look like chumps that don't know anything...

[-] 0 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

No, "chumps that don't know anything" are mentally-lazy people that ask stupid questions rather than looking up the answers and who then don't even bother to read the answers you give to them.

No, "radical center" does not simply refer-to "the center of the political spectrum".

Read it again.
Adherents of this philosophy claim to improve policy and general politics by not harboring a bias toward the precedence of either markets or the state, as can be characterized of right-wing politics and left-wing politics respectively.
Did YOU read the article?

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

This single paragraph does not sufficiently clarify the term any more than your paraphrasing.

There is a lot more to it than that, specifically:

"emphasis on epistemic virtue, by resolving false dilemmas, finding the excluded middle"

[-] 2 points by tomcat68 (298) 12 years ago

a few good movies doesn't make Hollywood any less liberal I think. they would make any movie for a buck. Its the constant flow of fresh homosexual movies and a queer in EVERY new show to convince the public that this behavior is "normal" that proves Hollywood is still 90% controlled by Liberals. You MIGHT find a liberal who isn't gay, but you'll never find a gay who isn't liberal.

[-] 0 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

OMG!

You are such a total Nut Job!

For all you right wingers out there, your homophobia is insane!

I am a straight white male and I love boning women. But I'm smart enough to know that homosexuals have been around since the dawn of time and that every species on the planet occasionally exhibits examples of homo-erotic behavior. This is nature.

I notice the same right wing nut jobs that spout all this "god hates fags" bullshit are the ones who start talking about Thermopylae and Xerxes as a narrative pretext for racist ideas.

All this jive about the glory and wonder of a bunch of ancient Greek cultures that have long-since died-out... Really just a jingoistic excuse for racist ideas about Muslims and various other "people-of-color" throughout the world. Which of course, always tends to serve as a pretext for building weapons, bombing the shit out of these people and then installing US corporations to govern the stealing of their resources.

http://occupywallst.org/forum/hollywood-has-turned-cryptofascist/#comment-430879

I always want to remind these people that the Ancient Greeks were NOTORIOUS for having a culture that openly acknowledged and accepted homosexuality.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

"Conservatism" is a plague upon this earth.

[-] 1 points by tomcat68 (298) 12 years ago

i didn't realize people with a mental illness were a specific Race. but if you say so. ok

Conservatism is when you pack a lunch, instead of eating at McDonalds. if That's a plague? then I'm sure you are just as infected, only not able to identify it.

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

Don't accuse me of racism.

Nothing in my post is even remotely racist (on the contrary) and for you to level such an attack only demonstrates that you either:

A) Are too lazy to actually read the post

B) Did not understand the post

C) Are using dirty tactics to try and make your opponents look bad

...I don't know which - but you're clearly guilty of one.

[-] 1 points by WFCapitalist07 (24) 12 years ago

I have no problem whatsoever with homosexuals but it seems a bit extreme to say that every species on the planet exhibits homoerotic behavior. Are there gay barnacles? What about bacteria that asexually reproduces?

[-] 1 points by Thinkdeer (250) 12 years ago

you're not off, though it does show up in non social organisms, it tends to exist to the greatest amount in social organisms with complex social relations. For the most part birds and mammals, with a few lizards joining the crew.

[-] 1 points by nikilister (109) 12 years ago

Miller is a Zionist. And he doesn't have the slightest clue who Spartans or Persians were. He sees everything in the context of Batman and Joker!!

Well he is the real Joker now.

Hollowood is a propaganda apparatus controlled by the jews to keep Americans in ignorance and make sure the HoloCash industry is up and running.

“I don’t care if Americans think we’re running the news media, Hollywood, Wall Street or the government,” Jewish columnist Joel Stein wrote in the Los Angeles Times in December 2008. “I just care that we get to keep running them.

There are greedy bankers, CEOs and plutocrats from all races, all cultures, all religions, all parts of the world and all skin colors.

Can we please stop blaming all of this on Jewish people?

If you want to argue for a free Palestine or oppose international pro-Zionist foreign-policy on ethical or humanitarian grounds... Right on.

But if you came here to promote racist ideas or talk some kind of Neo-Nazi jive, you came to the wrong place.

This antisemitism needs to stop.

If you want argue for the rights of Palestinians or to oppose Israel's foreign policy decisions on humanitarian grounds, that's just fine.

But you need to take all of this "global jewish banking conspiracy" crap elsewhere.

No one here is a racist and no one wants to hear that shit.

[-] 1 points by EXPOSED (222) 12 years ago

Yes, the overused, inappropriate antisemite card...

I didn't mentioned anything about "global jewish banking conspiracy"? LMAO

You did, not me. Next time save your stupid assumptions and BS excuses for a non-Jew that is ignorant about the CLEAR difference between anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist...

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

Very well.

Define: "Zionism" and lay-out your opposition to it, or provide a link to a place where you've done this and I will read it with open eyes.

There are a lot of antisemites trying to spread that message and a lot trolls trying to falsely accuse occupiers of neo-nazism.

This will not do.

[-] 1 points by EXPOSED (222) 12 years ago

I don't have to define anything myself, there are clear and different definitions of Zionism and Judaism in the dictionary, wikipedia and elsewhere. Perhaps you should familiarize yourself with them...

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

Zionism and Judaism are two completely different things.

I know what those words mean.

I want to know what YOUR position is.

[-] 1 points by EXPOSED (222) 12 years ago

I am Jewish by the way.

[-] -1 points by roloff (244) 12 years ago

I am sick of Facisct, I have no clue what the word means, but anyone I disagree with has to be a facist, I also believe in God, he is like Santa Claus and loves me no matter what.

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

Santa Claus is a Marxist.

That's why he wears red and why everyone LOVES HIM so much.

Don't believe Republicans... Red is the color of Socialism.

Didn't you know those elves were unionized?

You want Fascists to hate?

Look to Wall St., Tea Partiers and the Republican Party.

[-] -1 points by roloff (244) 12 years ago

I knew it that commie bastard, I wondered how he can give toys to all the children in the world for free. He obvioulsy must be taking the resources and livelihood of the elves and distributing it to the world in order for political gain. I have been deceived my whole life, here I thought he was this generous fat man, in reality he is this racist enslaver who robs and enslaves little people so he can convince the world he is some great benefactor.

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

Actually, Santa hasn't enslaved anyone.

The elves democratically elected him after evil US toy manufacturers who were exploiting them in various third world countries got too greedy and slashed the elves pensions whilst simultaneously tricking them into a bizarre housing fiasco.

After the Global Democratic Socialist Uprising of Elves (1910), democratically elected elf delegates were sent to the Conference on International Elf Affairs (CIEA) and Santa was unanimously elected as the best elf for the job - due mostly to his notoriety as a Catholic Saint.

Anyway, the rest (as they say) is history. Santa has been an effective leader ever since. Unfortunately, the elves got fucked in the end. With the help of advertising, the media, Madison Ave., Wall St., and the US Military/Industrial Complex, US toy manufacturers are making products that are as popular as ever. And using them to program kids for war. Kids don't want wooden horses made by elves any more. They want Transformers, etc...

Thus, as far back as the 1950's, Santa and the elves eventually were forced to turn to Corporate Interests to support there program of free toys for kids. Now they are basically a glorified distribution network and Santa's workshop more closely resembles UPS package handling warehouse than a quaint toy workshop.

Ever see an elf drive a forklift?

[-] 0 points by roloff (244) 12 years ago

Very interesting although I may be a stooge of the media's lies, but I am under the perception that Santa is not an "elf" so therefore how could he be the best elf for the job. Santa was born a man, as all catholic saints, so how could he be qualified as best elf, unless the elves concede that the best elf is not an elf at all. Maybe this doesn't matter in the Elven constitution as does the American one.

Still how do you know that the North Pole is not some propaganda state that lets out the lie to the rest of the world know the elves are happy with what they got. Considering the only time any elf leaves there they are always accompanied by Santa Claus to malls accross the world, it is impossible to get an honest assesment of the place. When is the last time humans were there, and when they were I am sure they were guest of the State's leader. I am not saying that the North Pole maybe worst than North Korea, but it is possible that these elves are not happy at all. It is very possible they are enslaved by the person we all loved as children. I loved carnivals too as a kid then I worked at one and found out that most of the guys working there were convicted pedophiles that were trying to score with 13 year olds.
Just a thought. you never know what is true.

[-] 1 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

Yeah... No, I don't believe any of that.

Sounds like McCarthy-era, witch-hunt, anti-Communist propaganda to me.

[-] -1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

In fact, Miller’s comments benefit Occupiers, because it shows that our political system “requires a mindless, propagandistic (or 'cryptofascist') storytelling medium to distract its citizenry.”

Is this true? If it is then it suggests that we toss the entire narrative of history in the dustbin. That 300 stood in defiance of tyranny and so gave their lives - is this not historically accurate? Is it not inspirational?

That their sacrifice shaped the minds of both friend and foe alike, is this not educational? Does this not tell us something about social systems of belief, and how these systems may be put to our use?

After Thermopylae Xerxes forces fell into gradual disarray, pressed by a hard winter and Greek resistance that denied them food at every opportunity. When the Greek and Persian armies did meet one year later, the Greeks were still vastly outnumbered. Yet the Persians remembered the skill and ferocity of the Spartan hoplite.

They remembered the strength of the Spartan shield, the length of the Spartan spear, and the commitment of the Spartan heart - and so they knew fear.

Within their own fear lay the seeds of their own destruction.

Are these not valuable lessons for us today?

Storytelling is an ancient practice, one that has a specific use, and that is to provide information about ourselves. It is a way to hang on to what is true, To take possession of what we have learned, and pass this information on to future generations.

Within any group of people there will be a divergence of opinion. This is as true of Hollywood as it is of any bureaucracy or corporation.

I say:

see what is true

use what is useful

. z

[-] 0 points by SmithGoesWashington (72) 12 years ago

"Storytelling is an ancient practice, one that has a specific use" Sir, stories should be told anew. The story you mentioned also has a specific use: To be a good fascist wolf-killer from your childhood. Be a soldier before you start to think independently. Sir, OWS movement means to wash your insight, to wash the words, to grow new roots. Hollywood has a statement of mission which is in contradiction, overall, with the interests of burgeoning civilisation we are witnessing right now: civilisation of human race. Why do you want to bring that big ape into your little tent, into your small rucksack? Sir, leave it behind to fly light.

[-] 0 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

First, don't call me sir. It makes me feel old.

Second, I don't like wolf killing - not as it pertains today. Those who advocate for the slaughter of wolves have no interest in understanding the relationship between wolves and the rest of the ecosystem they inhabit, let alone how vital that ecosystem is to the human species. Sara Palin advocates killing wolves, from helicopters. I am tempted to suggest a response to such behavior, one that would involve a 50 caliber rifle, but I will refrain, lest it be proven effective and somehow tied back to my own advocacy on behalf of a most majestic canine.

Instead, let me suggest the contradictory nature of life itself.

see what is true

use what is useful

z

[-] 0 points by SmithGoesWashington (72) 12 years ago

Sir, I mean there is no lesson in that story as narrated by Hollywood. There is no forgiveness; no affection no establishing a human relation. Most of the Hollywood works are infantilization of audience. It does not allow your adversary talks, lest he might convince you. Shows your environment as cynically hostile. Projects present times conflicts uniformly to all situations of history and re-writes the history to inflate Americans towards more hostility; it is the dominant feature of Hollywood. It is lacking form. All stories are similar regardless of their backgrounds. Its job is to mold the man, even when it is criticizing this very concept. There is no difference with what it produces for six years children or sixty years people. If you can find something among its junks it’s due to your own brightness or it is only 1% (here 1% is good).

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

Sir

?

Now what did I say about that?

As far as Hollywood goes, I think you vastly underrate the medium. It is perhaps an expression of your own system of belief or limitations on your own creativity.

[-] 0 points by SmithGoesWashington (72) 12 years ago

By the way, you may notice, my user name is taken from a movie, "Mr Smith Goes to Washington!"

[-] 0 points by SmithGoesWashington (72) 12 years ago

No sir, the medium has been used and created many pieces of excellent artistic visualisations of human being, but rarely. You can compare, say, works of Tom Stoppard with other printed materials that you can see on bookshelves of train stations; that ratio.

[-] 0 points by metapolitik (1110) 12 years ago

No one is suggesting we "toss the entire narrative of history in the dustbin"...

There are plenty of great independent comics out there and even leftists like me love Batman. It's a matter of seeing through the memes and hidden messages in these works and recognizing them for the bullshit that they are.

Example:

Batman is a 'good guy' (in-spite of his dark, anti-hero personage) and he is a rich white capitalist. Thus, capitalists (in-spite of their sometimes dark, anti-hero personages) are portrayed as 'good-guys' while virtually everyone else in their sphere of interaction is either a villain or a nobody, including government officials, policemen, fire-fighters, etc...

Reporters are important because they are hot women and they tend to sleep-with the rich, white, capitalist anti-hero.

As a life-long fan of comics, I think that comics serve to give artists and writers a unique medium of expression while at the same time, creating a middle-ground between film and literature that enables a sort-of cross-cultural pollination of ideas and a more effective public dialogue.

But it is important to remember (and this is no secret to students of graphic arts, advertising and media) that if you look at the history of comics in America, they've been traditionally used by Madison Avenue, Wall Street and the US Military/Industrial Complex to spread statist, pro-corporate propaganda.

Much like your comment.

As for all the jive about the glory and wonder of a bunch of ancient Greek cultures that have long-since died-out... It sounds like a jingoistic excuse for racist ideas about Muslims and various other "people-of-color" throughout the world. Which of course, always tends to serve as a pretext for building weapons, bombing the shit out of these people and then installing US corporations to govern the stealing of their resources.

Same old Capitalist Imperialism.

But don't worry: At night, the capitalists dress up in tights and go out fighting crime and putting away the dreadful evil-doers and super-villains. Who are generally cartoon pastiches that have no parallels in real life.

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

Your perception of the history of comics and their use may be accurate, but your following statement is simply ad hominem, which serves only to undo your own credibility and so shade the rest of your statement.

No worries. I see you have followers.

[-] 0 points by roloff (244) 12 years ago

Just because you watched the movie "300" doesn not make you an expert on Spartan history

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

What a stunning observation. The acuity of your perception is simply glaring.

 • I did not claim any historical credentials or expertize

 • You have not demonstrated a single point of historical inaccuracy in reference to my post

 • The story of the three hundred has not been a narrative unique to Frank Miller

 • Three of the battles waged by Greeks, in Greece, against Persia, were rated as among the top 20 most pivotal military contests in 2500 years of western history, by an Englishman c1850. The last of these 20 most pivotal battles occurred at Saratoga . . .

Did you have a point behind your comment? Or were you simply blowing off gas . . .

[-] 0 points by roloff (244) 12 years ago

Yes, you may use such big words such as "Acuity, perception, observation, and narrative" But your still a blowhard wannabe historian that has no point yourself except to try to impress with your exquisite vocabulary and your elitist knowledge of the classical world. History degrees don't pay my friend and they don't get you laid either

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

Are we friends? Time will tell . . .

In any case, you have not demonstrated inaccuracy in:

 • the historical facts as stated,
 • the analysis of those events
 • their practical application

As for the rest of your statement, which is certainly entertaining if not the least enlightening, all I can say is

this

z

[-] 0 points by roloff (244) 12 years ago

Historical facts as stated as inaccuracy, Thermopylae never happened it was a lie created by the Jews to pretend like the west created democracy, when in reality it is the Jews tool to control us. The analysis of those events is it never happened, Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates were really giraffes the Jew founder Moses rode out of Egypt as a kid. The practical application is The Jews stole our money and they got away with it. Damnit Z what the fuck are we going to do.

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 12 years ago

Why is it that fringe elements of both right and left seem to have such a hardon for the Jewish people . . .

I suspect that it must be deeply intertwined with what they themselves must perceive as a potentially overactive libido and a deep seated sense of disenfranchisement, a powerlessness, with which they cannot seem to come to grips

[-] 0 points by roloff (244) 12 years ago

Not what I heard a month ago, when Michael Moore was the godsend of the OWS movement. When he finally kept his mouth shut for once, he became the enemy of OWS.

[-] 0 points by agnosticnixie (17) from Laval, QC 12 years ago

Slight correction: Moore is not Hollywood; he's a documentarist (you can still be a documentarist and do blatant propaganda) from MI and by and large is still mostly in the Indie circuits. That's basically like saying Gus van Sant is Hollywood because he made movies that showed up in theaters.

Ah you're TOO subtle for me, "ronjj", keep your profundity for your pal Dubya...

Be back, got to google "profundity". You been watching FOX again?? Sounds like one of O'Rilleys's word of the day skits.

Ah, forget google, I'll just ask Obama to pronounce it for me and Dubya to explain it to me. Going to learn a lot today.

You cryptopig ronji!

We all know YOUR the one watching Faux News.

Also, according to the Cambridge Institute of Linguistic Analysis, "profundity" IS a word.

...But no one would ever expect you to know that ronji.

WOW - you had to go all the way to Cambridge to do that. I just went out on my back porch, gabbed the Funk and Wagnals and got my information . Then back to my easy chair.

You are such a darling and so much fun to be around. WE ALL KNOW that but NO ONE WOULD ever expect.

I'm fun to be around?

Are you insinuating that you know me personally offline?

If so, remind me next time I see you to give you a good kick in the balls.

Assuming you have any.
