Forum Post: High paying jobs go wanting because Americans cant pass drug tests

3 out of 4 applicants fail drug tests for very high paying oil field jobs. In some parts of Wyoming, oil field roughnecks are getting $90/hr salary plus benefits. Some of these jobs are going to Romanians because young Americans cant pee in a cup.

I did. Couldn't find any wages close to $90 an hour. What is your source?

I was in Casper yesterday at a bar with a friend. Just asked the local roughnecks.

Unfortunately, a lot of the workers get strung out on crystal meth. Again, first hand from several roughnecks born and raised in Casper.

Uh... so these people are workers and they get strung out on meth? How does that relate to applicants?

Does it also not say something that people who are working these jobs feel the need to use meth?

How many jobs are available though? I read an article saying there are about 4000 oil rig workers in that area total, this was some years ago (2007) so lets say the industry has grown by 100% over 5 years, 8000 workers now. (Link: http://www.hcn.org/issues/343/16915/article_view?b_start:int=3&-C= )

Article also has interesting coverage of the safety (lack of it) at those sites. Granted its a bit dated, but there have been incidents in recent year as well.

They require people to be willing to take the risk of being caught in a blowout. They also require people who would want to live and work in Wyoming.

Now out of that subset of people (already a small number) 3/4 are failing drug tests.

Personally I don't feel a pressing need for $90 an hour if I have to move to Wyoming to get it, worry about being blown to bits when the owners try to cut corners, all this while working in an industry which I don't really care about beyond the prices which I have to pay for gas.

Come on, peeing in a cup with a spike in your vein is easy enough to get past...... I ain't buying the entire premise.

Have you ever done oil or iron type of rough neck work?

If them boys wanna toke a joint, so what?
