Forum Post: Helping determine a platform.

How do you decide what the 99% supports? It is hard to determine simply by looking at a forum or listening to a group of protesters. I believe I have a means that might be of assistance. I am founding a lobbying organization designed to represent the interests of the majority. To determine what those interests are we will be polling our membership on the issues to decide what arguments to make to Capitol Hill. The organization has no preset view points or perspectives. We are simply here to give a voice to the masses on Capitol Hill. Not only can we help determine a direction, we can collect information that will make a powerful argument. As opposed to simply saying that the group stands for something we will be able to contact a congressperson and tell them that 83% of our members from his congressional district and 81% nationally support a given issue. We will give the elected leaders the opportunity to write back to their constituents via our website and help moderate the discussion. If you are interested please check out www.lobbydemocracy.com for more information. We are currently working with a web designer to build the member login, security and database to hold and sift through all of the data. Our full launch will be on November 6th, but the website is already up and I think we can help turn a collection of voices into a powerful lobbying force.

What issues do you think that we should poll on to help determine what matters to the organization?

My argument is that no one can put together a list of goals or a set of solutions until we create a means to gather the data about the 99%. To do so without gathering the data would be to ignore the very concept of supporting the 99%.

I understand that, and to a great extent agree. It does not currently have the focus to make real formative change. The momentum of the movement is significant and simply needs to formalize in some manner to help it develop. As opposed to creating a governing body or a leader, I am recommending that we simply focus on collecting data on the desires of the many in relation to issues that are being debated on Capitol Hill.

"Supports" isn't enough. We have that from the NYC General Assembly - a list of greivances.

Put forth the solutions so we can know if this cause if rational or psychotic.

The goals stated so far of "end corporate influence and bail outs and end the corruption of the government" are great but they are missing the action item. It is like a goal of "lose weight" without having "by running 3 miles a day". It is empty rhetoric and directionless so far.
