Global Education Strike: Oct. 18 & Nov. 14-21

Global Education Strike!

via the International Student Movement:

We are calling for a Global Education Strike. It is the first time that an education strike is being coordinated worldwide. We will UNITE in solidarity, because no matter where we live, we face the same struggle against national state and profit driven interests, and their hold on education. Increasing tuition fees, budget cuts, outsourcing, school closures, as well as other phenomena are linked to an increasing commercialization and privatization of education. Only by uniting globally will we be able to overcome these and enable free emancipatory education for all.

We are all struggling against cuts in education. Most of us are drowning in student debt. The increasing pressure to perform just makes us sick and the restrictions on education and ever-increasing tuition fees, among other barriers, make us angry! Everyone must have access to education no matter their monetary or social status. We have had enough of the pressure to measure everything - even the unmeasurable! We are sick and tired of competitiveness being the only criteria dictating everything! It is about time that we do something about this together – UNITED!

We are all people affected by the increasing commodification and commercialization of education. This is vividly portrayed by the symptoms affecting us, such as schools and universities being de-democratized and the further implementation of more hierarchical structures. The education market and competition between institutions is being facilitated by governments around the world, which are increasingly privatizing education, health care, and all other social needs.

In June 2012 alone, we recorded 45 protests in more than 40 cities in connection with the struggle for free emancipatory education. Governments have chronically underfunded the institutions, often using the current economic crisis as a pretext. They promote 'solutions' such as: rankings encouraging competition; closing schools that 'underperform'; increasing student enrollment without increasing faculty, staff, and student resources; outsourcing everything that can be outsourced; promoting elite institutions. All these 'solutions' are steps towards an increasing commodification and privatization of education, which also has negative impacts on the conditions for teaching and learning.

The education market and national states require that profits take priority over developing the capabilities for emancipatory thinking. Both need obeying 'citizens', consumers and cheap labour, not emancipated individuals living self-determined lives.

We are being mechanized to function as cogs in the capitalist machine. We are socialized to compete with our fellows on every level. Our creativity, our energy and our free spirits are actively being crushed by the educational institution.

The education system within capitalism consists mainly of training factories which are supposed to produce human capital for the exploitation on the labour market as well as knowledge to be commodified. To point out these links and interrupt this mode of production we herewith call for the closing down of educational institutions worldwide during the Global Education Strike.

Fight back! Join in the GLOBAL EDUCATION STRIKE.

All justice begins with knowledge. Stand with us as one this October and November, and the whole world will hear our call to Reclaim Education.

I am from India and hence I am not much conversant with the modern USA. I never had been to USA and never expect to be. I am a semi-cripple, old and near-zero income and mostly out of touch with the outer world for the obvious reasons (India is not a developing country as they advertise; only the ancient India was spiritually developed; today we are as confused as USA). But I am trying to contribute whatever way I can.

I am well conversant with the old-world USA that modern USA people seem to have forgotten. My only contact with the 1930…1960 USA was mostly through some awesome magazines that existed at no other parts of this planet. Here are some names:

  1. Popular Science
  2. Popular Mechanics
  3. Mechanix Illustrated
  4. Science & Mechanics
  5. Few others, don’t remember the names

The magazines not only contained very interesting developments in various fields but also dedicated half the book for DIY projects—ranging from sewing buttons to scale modeling an ocean-liner complete with REAL steam turbine engine and radio control. Almost every USA home had a home-workshop or DIY hobby-room as they called it. They downloaded their dreams in miniature sizes in this way as father-and-son project. Even women were extremely deft in various handicrafts. This is how they Self-taught themselves how to dream and how to actualize the dream in scaled down sizes. When they reached perfection with the models as students, they entered profession and just expanded the scale-size to full-size. Simple protocol, yet perfect in practice.

I learnt this little secret of life almost from my birth—my father had a large collection of the above USA magazines. I was born in India but my education took place in USA—almost free of cost. Thanks to the magazines—they delivered tons of ever-green wisdom in our little home in India. I had demonic interest for science and engineering and I learnt a lot from the magazines of the highest order. To me, the books are sacred names; I still have some of the old magazines. Insects ate the rest. The magazines gave me the general aura of old-world USA—tons of peace in every home. That reminds me of an old movie—“How green is my valley” and the song—“There will be peace in the valley.”

I thought that the magazines would eventually turn all homes on this planet as ever-green life. I never had any idea that someday some madmen would strip down the hobby-rooms and ever-green minds. I wish you rediscover your own history and make it a living story in every home—just the way it was—once upon a time, so that people live happily ever after.

Why so few feedbacks and comments to such a noble mission for uprise? Did you notice that corporate houses "love" us as perpetual customers and hate us as defenders of human/social rights? Did you notice that syllabuses have changed gradually to become training programs to fill up spaces in corporate cubicles, showrooms, machine rooms? I imagine the global circumstance as a "balance sheet." Doing so, the two sides become poor side and rich side. The economists are trying to mend this social/national/international balance sheet by inventing clever formulas! They should first get the school education that says, "Nature seeks balance." Nature created life and Nature gives us natural rules and natural rights for life.

We need a highly organized and sustainable National Reform Movement. The poor design of our government is what is allowing corruption to take control of it, and causing many of the problems we are concerned about. The Demand of OWS should be a redesign of our government to embrace a comprehensively designed ethical governance system (CEGS). A CEGS will include the best of current, democratic governance, economic, and social systems, while introducing new ideas to redesign the governance structure to protect it against corruption and halt the oppression of the people.

Now for some education. There is a war against terror. So where is the armed force of justice out there fighting the economic terrorists. Why are not the fiscal terrorists who are killing whole societies and nations not brought to justice.NATO has to be engaged to see if these terrorist headquarters in the Caymans,Bern etc need bombing. The relentless attack upon the world by these terrorists has to be addressed.

Hi... On June 21, 2011, University of Phoenix stopped me from finishing my PhD program, while I am working on my doctoral dissertation, due to a balance of 3,800.00 $, the school collected over 45,000.00 $ from my financial aid. I am jobless since 2008, invested 167,000.00 $ in my schools, to get a job, ended with getting 3 master heavy student loans but no job. How I pay my loans. I wrote to Mr. B. H. Obama, it seems that he is busy with his election, he did not come back to me yet. He has not time to address the student loan issues which millions of American students trapped in to get education & find good jobs in US. They ended with heavy loans & no jobs.

when I left high school, I had no thought of any chance to go to college. that was for rich kids. It is drifting back in that direction, only the well off be able to get their children into higher education. The few at the top suck most of the money out by outsourcing, privatization to profit centers, etc. A lot of you get it exactly what is going on but you are losing the attention of the masses of people who either vote for a republican or a democrat, neither of which can resist the corruption of money in their lawmaking process. Even tea party people have their wealthy supporters. Simple fairness is now seen as some countryfied vision from the past that no longer matters. I think government for sale was partly what went wrong with the Roman Empire.

The hidden reality. In the clear light of day, nothing covered up, comprehension not lacking Many opposed the Absolute, before this birth In the foggy illusion, everything concealed, understandings tied to illusions Many will oppose the Absolute, before this death Leniency is the reason for time, choosing takes place in time Time is an illusion... Allowing for leniency… Which cannot exist, though it does! We are all God, how we treat each other, is how we treat God Once clear, but now blind, we feel our way, though we think we see The illusion has given us sight, blinding our feelings, though sight is an illusion Sight makes everything possible, though everything is not possible! What is right? What is wrong? What is good? What is bad? Is there a right? Is there a wrong? A good, or bad? Absolute truth, will juxtapose ours And if both the same, then both are One! Where both are One, One is all Greed, control, subjugation and superiority are the tools for separation Love, compassion, devotion and sacrifice is the power of One!

Education is free in the 3 world county, why it is Not in with the richest ones. It's the 1% who likes to enslave the educated people to run them they way they like & steel their resources. Education is a light, & educators are touches who hold that light to en-light the dark, evil practices, of the 1% in any society. When the occupies invade any poor country they do there best to bribe the educators to world for them, or force them to leave their home land or kill them & put them under the ground. The 1% practiced this skillfully in our front yard (home), they made the 99% slaves world to implement their devil pans to enslave the rest of the world......It's a wakening moment in the 5 Continents...Education should be free like air for everyone & everywhere ...Student debts, loans need to be cancelled immediately...

If I were an undergraduate student I would totally use up my allowed absences on this strike, but I teach and and I can't strike or I'll get fired. I can probably arrange to have someone cover my class on October 18th, but that still doesn't stop my class from being held, and someone else still has to do my work for me (and I have to make it up to them). The days from November 14-21 would be too hard to get someone to cover for me. Again if I were just a student I would strike (and sometimes did) but I can't see what I can do from my current position. Good luck guys.
