Fusion power (whether artificial or from the Sun's own natural fusion reactor) is the only answer for anybody:

Nothing else will prevent the collapse of advanced industrial-scale civilization.

I believe that the game changing technology that will be the beginning of the end for energy domination is the Ultra Capacitor or sometimes called the Super Capacitor. It can store electrical energy quickly and deliver it quickly. It is light, its capacity to be recharged almost unlimited. Its form factor can not only be the structure of a box but it can be built into the structure of the car.

The technology is just around the corner. It will give us the ability to drive say 300 miles on a single charge and be recharged in less than five minutes. It can be used to store solar power or any other power that can be generated from any source. When this comes about, there will be no different between driving a car powered by gasoline and it is mostly clean except when charged from dirty energy sources.

It gives us the ability to take control of power out of the hands of corporations. It makes the grid less necessary. It is safer than hydrogen being used in mobile situations. It is electronic so the price will come down tremendously over time. Hydrogen power is best used in stationary situations like homes and businesses.

With Fusion power, we will need a significant upgrade of our power grid. With capacitors we can get more people off the grid.
