WASHINGTON (AP) — A different way of calculating America’s poor by taking into account medical costs and work-related expenses finds a higher total than the government’s official count.

This measure is aimed at providing a fuller picture of poverty. It found there are 49.7 million poor people in the country — or 16.1 percent of the population. That compares with the 46.2 million, or 15 percent, as reported in September in the Census Bureau’s official count.

According to the newly developed measure, those more likely to live in poverty are people 65 or older, urbanites and Hispanics — the result of medical expenses and higher living costs in cities.

California had the highest share of poor people, followed by Arizona and Florida. In the official tally, it’s Mississippi, New Mexico and Arizona.

Poverty in the US is massively under reported due to official indifference, under-employment, part-time employment, multiple-job holding, poverty wages as well as the 'cult of wealth' cultural factors. I append a couple of articles :

"Issues of class and economic inequality will only make it onto the nation's political agenda if people come together around their shared grievances to build a mass-based political movement. This means building bridges across the divides that have long been inflamed by right-wing rhetoric. Perhaps, following the lead of organizers in the Occupy movement, this solidarity can be expedited by making debt a centerpiece of organizing - bringing together those who bear the burdens of student debt, homeowner debt, credit card debt, medical debt, and even those populations who are losing out because local governing bodies are weighed down by municipal debt. That's a lot of people on whom the 1% has been profiteering."

"The reason for the drop in average tax rates is no secret: It’s the special 15% top rates for capital gains and dividends that President George W. Bush pushed through. In 2009, taxpayers with incomes exceeding $10 million reported 35.8% of their income as capital gains and dividends. That rose to 48.5% for 2010."

The immorality of 'carrot and stick' crapitalism, is increasingly plain for all to see and even the most jaundiced right-wing eye can see that there is something very wrong here.

Or in other words 83.9% of the people in this country are NOT poor/living in poverty.
