@rainxdog

agreed we need ground level support and grassroots canidates but some big names would definitely help the cause get the media attention it so sorely needs

A few celebrity faces certainly wouldn't hurt. I know Roseanne Barr was on location giving speeches a few days ago, and the rapper Lupe Fiasco was promoting the movement at his concerts over the weekend. I'd love to see a few more popular ones speak for us.

You need to do categories and "sticky" where certain key posts will stay at the top in each category. Sticky example, "Celebrities and public figures connect here" is urgently needed, so that this movement can grow some teeth (safe and secure public mediator, middleman). Principals needed... Alphas needed... or it's not going to fly.
Can you use free SMF forum software? Why re-invent the wheel?

I've definitely thought about making categories with moderated sticky threads. I'll probably get on that as soon as I get a chance.

I'd rather not use vBulliten or any of its clones because:

  1. vBulliten is sooo 2003
  2. vBulliten requires too much clicking and waiting for pages to load in order read content or leave comments.
  3. PHP is a huge security liability
  4. This site is written in Python. Interweaving code from another language introduces so much maintenance work and confusion.
  5. I wouldn't be able to have article comments.
  6. It wouldn't integrate with our geographic data.
  7. It doesn't have hierarchical comments
  8. People would have to have a second login for the forum because you can't integrate Django and vBulliten's authentication systems.

I believe the forum software on this site is excellent, mostly because I stole every good idea Reddit had ;) and it only took me a week to "reinvent" this particular wheel. Please give more thought to your criticisms before recommending that I "dump" my software ._.

Please also add search engines for both site and forum. Urgent, please; and many thanks for your contributions.

[-] 1 points by jart (1186) from New York, NY 12 years ago

What exactly do you mean by adding search engines? Please elaborate because I want to do whatever I can to help make this forum better for organizers <3

How do I search the forum for keywords "alpha" "principal" "mediator"? Categories and stickies would help.

[-] 1 points by jart (1186) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Here's a google trick. Try searching for:

site:occupywallst.org/forum/ alpha principal mediator

Category+Sticky will help the victims of police brutality to find evidence (pics/videos) to support their case; and so you need to get off of your ass, get some help; and add the google site search tools for both site and forum. Sorry, but ...

I did not deserve this sort of treatment. How about you get off your rear and help us find Django/Python programmers willing to help out. Are you in the square? Do you have any idea how much work we are all doing?

[-] 2 points by Eastoc (26) from New Orleans, LA 12 years ago

I posted your request for help on sitepoint and majorgeeks, looking for programmers, and pointed them to your profile page. What other sites can I contact for help?

[-] 1 points by jart (1186) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Thanks, you're a real gentleman (or lady) for helping <3

Some other ideas are maybe the programming related subs on reddit, IRC channels on Freenode, etc. I'll see if I can't get some Django core developers to help out too since I've been working with them on developing some security enhancements. Anyone who wants to help can message me on github or email justine@occupywallst.org

It can be so difficult at times, you know! Django developers are hard to recruit for anything, mostly I think because the people who use Django tend to be really, really good programmers and always seem to busy with some new startup... or helping to start the revolution :3 I know a few here in NYC who are offering me other forms of support, but are too busy to get involved in a new project sadly.

Main forum index page has SEVERAL posts demanding forum categories and stickies. When I open the occupywallst main page in Opera, I get this strange security warning that everything is being forwarded to another site called "engine.qik.com"...

[-] 2 points by Eastoc (26) from New Orleans, LA 12 years ago

I'll see what I can do.

If you want leadership on the movement. Its easy. Get a speaker phone. Anyone holds the speaker phone is the leader at that given moment. Each person give a speech using the speaker phone.

So you have an "anonymous" leader

I was taught in corporate marketing, the one who holds the pen, controls the room.

Also ,once you stay there a while get to know people, naturally , some sort of leader would be emerge naturally. This is build into human instinct. Man hunt in packs before.

This movement needs elected leadership, mediator, diplomat. Someone who the law can't crush/destroy. Ron Paul? Michael Moore?

If anything we need to choose one of the protestors at ground zero and promote them. We don't need ANY sort of party hijacking; that's how the Tea Party went down hill.
