Forum Post: forget protesting and start campaigning!!!!

I've been following the events going on in the different occupy demonstrations, mainly wall street and boston. Its my opinion that the protests arent going to work at all (read further before ya start flaming me). they worked in the middle east but at the same time look at what happened at libya, the leaders of that part of the world know that the people can and will resort to violence if necessary. here in the US, its not an option. sure the 150 million potentially armed americans could overwhelm even our military but the good luck starting that, and no matter what it'd be a bloodbath.

but here's my solution: organize a political party

me personally I'm tired of our government, congress only has to work 3 days per week and they usually dont even show up, our president's dont know what it's like to be apart of the people, not to mention their job is put on hold for the last year of their terms for elections, they accept lobby money (aka legal bribes) and throw their votes in session to help the minority groups in the country on subjects that the vast majority of americans couldnt care less about.

I've asked my coworkers and its unanimous with us, if someone took a bluecollar worker, a man or woman who has had problems paying bills or buying food, lives pay check to paycheck, ect. and put them on a ballot with some decent ideas on how things need to change, we'd vote for them. might not be able to get into the whitehouse right away but even getting a few people from the 99% into state legislators or congress can have a positive impact and help get the ball rolling

so start up an occupation party and the key issues are simple:

end tax cuts for big business, except a cut for keeping/moving jobs back into the US. we need the jobs, so give them an incentive.

eliminate the retirement's for our politicians, a soldier needs to spend 20 years in the military to get retirement our politicians need 1 term and they get round 170,000 a year for life (senate)

speaking of the military, cut back if you need to but dont mess with military retirement or benefits. a man/woman risking their lives for their country shouldnt havta worry about their family loosing health benefits back home. so cut back the quantity of soldiers and not the quality of their perks.

give grants to innovative thinkers. big corporations have had their shot, if their business is failing its unavoidable, either they mismanage their money, or there isnt a market for them anymore because of the times we live in. instead the small businesses are where its at, we need entrepreneurs that know what its like to earn a buck instead of just inherit it.

there's alotta other issues that can be covered. but some that are pointless, like gay marriage, i've met a couple people who are gay and want it and alot of people who just dont care, so why is it such a big issue in washington. abortions the same way, we have bigger problems than trying to decide that, if nothing else pass those decisions off to the state governments where they belong.

so what do ya think?

Hello all START A REAL CAMPAIGN PLATFORM

I do feel similarly i.e. that many efforts although well-intentioned will be wasted unless there is concerted action.

I signed up today to express non-violent support and was immediately overwhelmed by the myriad of postings and arguments, with little apparent coherence. I am not even sure I understand the current goals, since there seem to be several factions with differing degrees of "revolution" or "change". Talk of "revolution" is always of concern, since it often connotes violence - something I cannot condone and will have no part in.

CREATE POLITICAL CLOUT To be an effective movement, we need to develop political clout. This clout would not be acheived by lobbying existing politicans, because in reality we would be feeding into the very system we are trying to change.(Almost everyone I talk to seems to feel in some way that the existing system provides only the illusion of democracy -one person one vote- but that the parts "by the people" and "for the people" are conveniently lost.)

I offer the following suggestion:

Create of a political platform, with the following initial targets (not in any particular order):

1) Ask for volunteers amongst our members to stand as candidates in the various state and federal level elections. 2) Use contributions to this movement to front the candiate registration fees and other unavoidable election costs 3) Use the huge power of the internet, rather than multi-million dollar campaign funds, to develop awareness of the candidates at very little cost. There are many flavors of internet communications: posts to this or affiliated sites, emails, twitter, facebook, webinars etc.

4) Use this site to agree a uniifed agenda on which all candidates will stand. 5) As elections become pending, provide local voting information to allow voters to easily identify who they are voting for and why.

This is just a start.

I welcome any feedback/comments

I think this is absolutely right. Rather than an "Occupation Party", I would love to see a "People's Party" on the ballot.

Rather than emphasizing Positions on certain Issues, I would suggest a party platform dedicated to taking American Democracy back from corporations and the 1%. In other words, I would suggest that candidates stand almost exclusively on their commitment to reforming government in ways that cultivate the empowerment and direct decision-making of citizens.

If you are working for democracy, then the ultimate democratic power is something you should be posting about. Article 5 of the US constitution. It has ALL the authority needed to make any change that protects rights and freedoms.

Congress is very afraid of an Article 5.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_to_propose_amendments_to_the_United_States_Constitution "Congress acted preemptively to propose the amendments instead. At least four amendments (the Seventeenth, Twenty-First, Twenty-Second, and Twenty-Fifth Amendments) have been identified as being proposed by Congress at least partly in response to the threat of an Article V convention."

Our first right in our contract is Article V, the right to have congress convene delgates when 2/3 of the states have applied for an amendatory convention.

Article. V.

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate.-------
