The V for Vendetta mask and the Guy Fawkes mask has become the international symbol for the Occupy movement. Let's start spreading awareness about the protests by growing out Guy Fawkes' beard.

What a bad idea. It's like occupying an iron-maiden and letting the 1% shut the door. That's a lot worse than shooting oneself in the foot. Whatever happened to reading books and crafting proper arguments? Oh yeah, this is an anarchic/communist movement where looking and thinking all the same is one of the main building blocks.

I agree. I find the romanticism associated with the V for Vendetta movie somewhat annoying. Rebellion isn't a fashion statement dammit, it's a mechanism for change!

The arguments come when the co-workers ask you why you are growing out that strange beard and you have to explain your reasons for it.

Changing the world is not about grooming your facial hairs. You shouldn't waste precious time with such nonsense. Be active, and move forward with real actions that promote real change.

Spreading the word about inequality is real action and it will promote real change. Time isn't wasted, since most people are clean shaven, it will actually be time saved while shaving.

It's much faster to do a full shave, then do shave around sections to create anarchic looking designs. The main problem is that it makes the movement look ridiculous. It doesn't help at all.

You do justice to your name Thrasymachus, you argue like a sophist. It does not take longer to shave less area of your face than more, either you don't have a beard or you are willing to lie to make your point. Even if some of us look ridiculous, any publicity is good publicity.

Attempt the following experiment. Try to shave the entire head of a person, next try to shave a design in another person's head. Even though you are removing more hair in the former exercise, you will soon realize it doesn't take as long as the latter.

If you feel that looking ridiculous is a must for your movement's success, then so be it. I once believed you would have been able to generate enough marketing through your ideas, I now see this is not the case. I guess it's good time to use the proverb - "When one lacks a platform, shave like Guy Fawkes and hope that works."

Even though this is getting off topic, what I propose is not an intricate design. It is just shaving everything except the mustache and a line on the chin. That does not require extra time or trimming.

And "shaving like Guy Fawkes" is not the idea. It is bringing up OWS in conversation and letting people know what it is about.

OWS is already known across the country, and most of your supporters do not have an articulate discourse like Vendetta. Let the intellectuals in your movement talk to the media if you need some marketing, don't ask illiterate kids to do that job. The thin chin line will also make you all look like metro-sexuals which is already out of fashion. Don't do it.
