Having decided to participate in a (farmer's) market, you must first create a product which can be packaged for sale. This is called commodification. In order to figure out what commodity you are going to offer for sale, you must do a number of recon missions to see what other vendors are selling. It is best to try to produce a commodity that is in demand, but in short supply. You can now see the market providing information so that a vendor can help with the clearance of surplus and shortages. This is very important-the other vendors in the Farmer's market are NOT a form of competition you can't deal with-you can talk to them and try to offer products which customers are asking for,but vendors at the market do not have. The Walmarts, supermarkets and roadside stands are competing with you,and if the idea of taking on Walmart to battle for market share-down to a single potato-scares you,well-you should be scared because fear is a rational reaction to facing battle in the Fields of the Lord with a rival such as they are.You can bust loose market share out of Walmart and the supermarkets if you are willing to do whatever it takes to take away their customers and attract them to your market. It will take some work, and you will have to struggle with blockheads,to organize, but it's doable. .A Farmer's Market where the vendors have organised to build up a good business is a wonderful place with music, and food and laughter, kids running around screaming, and all that. Most of all,the vendors will be able to provide high quality products and a meeting of community that is a great benefit to the customers, while making the kind of money that can end up being more than sufficient to do what needs to get done, with money left over to begin the process of capital formation and accumulation.Walmart and the supermarkets can't match quality, freshness,or the romantic atmosphere of the Farmer's Market, and small producers have more and better information from customers.Small producers can also compete effectively on prices as well.To be continued-Capitalist Imperative and price discovery next.
