Forum Post: Example of Corporate Influence in Politics

This is an example of a Corporation using campaign contributions to influence politics:

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2011/08/24/starbucks-ceo-pledge-to-halt-campaign-donations-gains-steam/

The intent is good, but the idea behind it should enrage every American regardless of their political lean. Our representatives should not be motivated to correct the deficit by campaign funds, but rather be motivated by the benefits of their constituents they are meant to represent! This needs to be corrected.

To fight corporate media influence we need the Fairness Doctrine back:

Here's my thought of Dean Skelos. He's an incumbent.

Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos said his Republican conference will continue its resistance to any new taxes in next year’s state budget, saying New York should start looking at cutting the tax burden and continue to rein in spending.

Appearing on Fred Dicker’s radio show on Talk 1300-AM in Albany, Skelos said Senate Republicans won’t be supportive of a tax on millionaires or anyone else despite an anticipated push from Assembly Democrats to reinstate a higher tax rate for the state’s top earners, which is set to expire at year’s end.

“No new taxes, Fred,” Skelos told Dicker. “I say this in all sincerity: We will not be supportive of any type of increase in income taxes. It doesn’t just affect the so-called wealthy, it also impacts small businesses, which is the heart of job creation in this state.

“No new taxes, absolutely not, and I don’t believe the governor will renege on his commitment of no new taxes.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has supported President Obama’s push to raise the tax rate for the nation’s highest earners, but said a tax on the state level would but New York at a competitive disadvantage with other states. Cuomo carried out a campaign pledge to not raise taxes or fees to balance the budget in his first year.

I must be missing something....how is any of this relevant to corporate campaign fund abuse?

who do you think is controlling the tax issue in nys? not the people. About 80% want a millionaires tax in nys and the whole usa

But Cuomo does make a point on resisting the tax on the state level which would place his state at a serious disadvantage to its neighbors. In fact Cuomo seems to be doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing which is protecting his constituents.

you mean the koch brothers and the rest of the special interests that are part of the Committee to Save NY?

[-] 1 points by daffyff (104) from Redwood City, CA 12 years ago

Without a doubt, campaign funding needs to be redressed, as do these committees taking advantage of voters' laziness in not investigating who is funding them. But in all fairness I don't blame the Koch bros. for using their influence to stop raising taxes in their state. They just want to save themselves the hassle of moving to New Jersey. Cuomo likewise wants to prevent the income generated by the Koch brothers from leaving his state, which is not only in his best interest but also that of the citizens of New York.

I have no interest in preventing politicians from doing their job. I just would like the koch brother's influence to be placed at the level of the people; in other words, to level the playing field.

Cuomo: On Obama’s tax thing, what I meant was …

He must have just looked at the specifics.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo just issued a statement on Barack Obama’s proposal to tax millionaires at a higher percentage, after declining to endorse the president’s plan at an event earlier today. He urged Congress to pass it.

“While I am against raising taxes in general, if taxes need to be raised to create jobs, balance the budget and lower the deficit then those increases need to be done at the federal level and on the wealthiest Americans, not the middle class,” Cuomo said.

Here’s his entire statement:

“As the President has rightly realized, the federal government is facing not only a fiscal and debt crisis but needs to take a strong action to create jobs and grow our economy.

I urge Congress to move quickly to pass the President’s plan so we can put New Yorkers and Americans back to work.

While I am against raising taxes in general, if taxes need to be raised to create jobs, balance the budget and lower the deficit then those increases need to be done at the federal level and on the wealthiest Americans, not the middle class.

New York State is one of the highest taxed states in the country. New York cannot have the people and businesses that create jobs and wealth in New York move to Connecticut or New Jersey which have lower taxes.”

Mark Hansen, spokesman for ny Senate Republicans, offered this response to the push for the millionaires’ tax.

“The republican Senate Majority agrees with Governor Cuomo that the state cannot raise taxes and we will not be supportive of any increase in any type of income tax increase. Increasing the personal income tax doesn’t just impact the wealthy, it impacts thousands of small businesses. We are just beginning to rebuild the state’s reputation and become more business-friendly. That’s why we must continue to reduce spending and taxes to help us create jobs,” Hansen said.

Per http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/list.php the MAJORITY of the money flowing into Congress has been from UNIONS giving to DEMOCRATS.

Do you think that MAYBE all that money from Realtors, laborers, electricians, carpenters, etc. had SOMETHING to do with the UNPRECEDENTED pace at which Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac kept lifting the CONFORMING LOAN limits thus FUELING the bubble ?

You DO KNOW, by the way that the LARGEST BAILOUTS when to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, RIGHT? We gave them $200 BILLION and ALSO absorbed LIABILITY for $5 TRILLION in loan guarantees.

[-] 1 points by daffyff (104) from Redwood City, CA 12 years ago

So you are agreeing that campaign funding needs to be reformed right?

Not only do I AGREE, I have created a proposal to that VERY end. See http://occupywallst.org/forum/we-the-people-in-order-to-a-proposal/
