We've heard about the government shutdown keeping would-be vacationers out of national parks, but it's also forcing some residents out of their own homes. Ralph and Joyce Spencer (who are 80 and 77 years old, respectively) have a home on Nevada's Lake Mead, but because it's on federal land, they've been kicked out until the government goes back to work. According to park rangers, the Spencers and other Lake Mead residents like them are only allowed into their homes to grab clothing and necessities and can't stay overnight.

The Spencers have been making do by staying with family, but they really just want to go home. "I had to … buy Ralph undershirts and jeans because I forgot his pants," Joyce told Channel 13 Action News. "We're not hurt in any way except it might cost me if I have to buy more pants."

Why are people allowed to live on federal land if they're going to be subject to such measures?
