Senators Demand the Military Lock Up American Citizens in a “Battlefield” They Define as Being Right Outside Your Window
While nearly all Americans head to family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Senate is gearing up for a vote on Monday or Tuesday that goes to the very heart of who we are as Americans. The Senate will be voting on a bill that will direct American military resources not at an enemy shooting at our military in a war zone, but at American citizens and other civilians far from any battlefield — even people in the United States itself.
Senators need to hear from you, on whether you think your front yard is part of a “battlefield” and if any president can send the military anywhere in the world to imprison civilians without charge or trial.
The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Lawl (R-Texas) raised his concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself.
The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday. The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and passed in a closed-door committee meeting, without even a single hearing.
I know it sounds incredible. New powers to use the military worldwide, even within the United States? Hasn’t anyone told the Senate that Osama bin Laden is dead, that the president is pulling all of the combat troops out of Iraq and trying to figure out how to get combat troops out of Afghanistan too? And American citizens and people picked up on American or Canadian or British streets being sent to military prisons indefinitely without even being charged with a crime. Really? Does anyone think this is a good idea? And why now?
The answer on why now is nothing more than election season politics. The White House, the Secretary of Defense, and the Attorney General have all said that the indefinite detention provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act are harmful and counterproductive. The White House has even threatened a veto. But Senate politics has propelled this bad legislation to the Senate floor.
But there is a way to stop this dangerous legislation. Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) is offering the Udall Amendment that will delete the harmful provisions and replace them with a requirement for an orderly Congressional review of detention power. The Udall Amendment will make sure that the bill matches up with American values.
In support of this harmful bill, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) explained that the bill will “basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield” and people can be imprisoned without charge or trial “American citizen or not.” Another supporter, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) also declared that the bill is needed because “America is part of the battlefield.”
The solution is the Udall Amendment; a way for the Senate to say no to indefinite detention without charge or trial anywhere in the world where any president decides to use the military. Instead of simply going along with a bill that was drafted in secret and is being jammed through the Senate, the Udall Amendment deletes the provisions and sets up an orderly review of detention power. It tries to take the politics out and put American values back in.
In response to proponents of the indefinite detention legislation who contend that the bill “applies to American citizens and designates the world as the battlefield,” and that the “heart of the issue is whether or not the United States is part of the battlefield,” Sen. Udall disagrees, and says that we can win this fight without worldwide war and worldwide indefinite detention.
The senators pushing the indefinite detention proposal have made their goals very clear that they want an okay for a worldwide military battlefield, that even extends to your hometown. That is an extreme position that will forever change our country.
Now is the time to stop this bad idea. Please urge your senators to vote YES on the Udall Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.
When the allegiance of government officers are not to the country they hold office in and the people are too complacent to remove them, those traitors enjoy wealth, power and the control over the populace they have infiltrated. Any populace so docile and placid as to allow these parasites to flourish, deserves nothing less than the disease they are left with. So long as those loyal to another nation are not routed out, exposed and executed as traitors, the children of the host nation will succumb to even greater hardships.
All neocons (they're in both parties) should be tried for treason!
The entire Congress is worthless.
... except for a TINY handful : Sanders, Kucinich, etc.
Yes. Most presidential candidates, except maybe RonPaul, but he keeps beating around the bush instead of using his exposure and wake up the sheep.
A court system, not under the command of traitors, will be required. I see no such court system. Once it does manifest itself, it will certainly be a shrewd and efficient machine of justice. I hope.

Watch how they vote on this bill, anyone who votes for it, does not believe in the principles of freedom this country was founded upon, and must be voted out of office in 2012 (if a revolution does not occur before that).

Thank you for posting this.
Hi superomenna, Thank you for post. Everyone needs to see this. Best Regards, Nevada
Is that what these FEMA camps are for, that they've been building since the 1980's?

When this veteran hears stuff like thi I feel compelled to offer my services to schools to start teaching children in grade school about the Bill of Rights guarantees demanded by US Constitution in the contract with this artificial entity called government. Constructed so we would not as a people have to operate our country but had laws in a contract to protect that government from turning on us. Well since the Patriot Act came along the traitors like those who thought this up have been gaining numbers in the most important part of our government and they want to end elections and our ability to have a say in it's operation. Worst they are going to imprison, no doubt water board and murder those who do not fall in line. Well as Edward R. Morrow used to remind the sleazy right-wingers like Joe McCarthy Americans are not descendant from meek people, we are not easily scared nor silenced. This bill seems to indicate our elected officials, 3/4 who are bought-off by intern corps/foreign gov can arbitrarily change our fundamental tenets, it means we the people are threatened from within. E Pluribus Unum, who is the boss here must start preparing if this is real. This danger is everywhere now, Europe, Australia here and all by the same 1% of rich folks with no loyalty or respect for any of our laws. So legally or by any means necessary , that 1% must be disenfranchised completely, as americans will not tolerate being enslaved.
Okay. Tomorrow morning-- it is showtime (calling congress people). Thank you once again for drawing attention to this horrible bill. I have been on a number of forums tonight, including this one chatting with people, encouraging them to call their senators. It was a bit overwhelming, but I had to get the word out there.
I hope and pray that it doesn't pass. It a threat to this movement and to all Americans. Well, anyway it is going late for me. We shall see tomorrow what is going on. We must stay strong no matter what.
Peace.
Has anyone here actually read the bill? Did anyone notice that none of the ACLU links actually provide any real information, they just link to the ACLU petition? When you look at the language of bill, it actually says this does NOT apply to American citizens. I am really confused, and I'm not the only one. Here, read the language directly: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x2378124#2381909
You know I think that there should be a color coding system on posts:
Code RED--Something that is extremely urgent. It may not be OWS initial agenda, but it is something that warrants immediate attention. (Your thread would be a Code Red).
Code Orange. Threads that have to do with Occupy's demands and goal
Code Blue. Threads that have to do with new ideas that could help this movement.
I hate seeing critical posts such as this one slip through the cracks. Keeping posting these kinds of post. Everyone needs to know what is going on in Congress. We need to be in the know. Thank you for providing this service.
AGREE!
I would add Code WHITE for anything posted by known TROLLS... :)
Hehe. Thank you for your input. Sadly, there would be a lot of Code White posts on here because this site is infested with trolls. Still and all, we are able to get our ideas out there and share with others. Thank God!
Yes, this forum is indeed TROLL-INFESTED - in spite of the "moderating policies" against trolling. That's why it would be nice to have their useless scribblings in WHITE as opposed to black... :)
I can not believe that there is only 16 responses to this. What you posted here is absolutely alarming!!! This horrible bill is a complete rape of our constitution. If it passes, it will be taking one major step towards Fascism. Nucleus pointed this out below with the 14 defining characteristics of fascism. Someone else mentioned what had been labeled a conspiracy theory (the FEMA camps), but now is beginning to look more like a reality if this awful bill passes.
I looked on line and very few websites are posting info about this. The American people are completely uninformed about what is going on (and some stay in a state of willful ignorance). There should be millions of people demanding that this bill doesn't pass (calling/writing to their Congressman/woman, protesting and marching).
This keeping the American people uninformed is deliberately done through a mainstream media blackout (who won't speak about it) and through distraction. Here is something else I was trying to bring to light recently. Most Americans are not aware that this is going on as well. http://youtu.be/8XN_jlK27a0 http://americancensorship.org/ I am speaking of the SOPA/ Protect IP bill and it will change the way info and videos is shared on the internet. It makes me think of China's great firewall that blocks it's people from sites we Americans take for granted. It will shut down sites in the blink of an eye for copyright infringement violations. It is a threat to our internet freedom.
OWS is focusing on Wall Street (where the money trail leads to) but we cannot ignore what is going on in D.C. Big business is throwing lots of money at our Congressmen to pass such laws. Everyone we are in a critical time. Our freedoms are being taking away right before our very eyes. This will not be the United States of America, but the Fascist States of America if these kind of bills pass. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!
please substantiate that these two Senators are of dual citizenship. I'd like to see how many other congresspersons or senators are in similar ways of being.
Carl Levin , Israeli American? He was born in Detroit.
he's a dual citizen (holds Israel and US citizenship)....fact. Dual citizens cannot be relied on to make the best decisions for American citizens because loyalty may lie with Israel....
He does not hold dual citizen ship with Israel
I had dual citizenship up to the age of 16. I was told if I kept it I would not be allowed to vote and since voting and a driver's license are a 'right of passage' to adulthood I chose to 'fledge' by relinquishing the German half of my citizenship.
Now that the USA appears to be solidifying itself as a fascist nation even with designs on controlling what I view and share on the Internet If we as a nation fail to overturn the corruption in our government then we will have lost everything and I will have one less option than before in terms of escaping internment in a military camp for citizens who rightfully object.
Benjamin Franklin was right in replying at the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention. He was asked 'What have you wrought?' to which he replied:'A Republic if you can keep it.'
It is a huge senate appropriations bill.

We should see the exact text referenced here, [pertaining to indefinite detention] and all relating texts [as in the HR bill]
and seek ways to advocate the elimination of indefinite detention altogether.
On the face of it I would suggest this is an intrusion into law enforcement jurisdiction on behalf of the pentagon, and it should be killed completely.
The congress are trustees to the bankruptcy that has been going on since 1930. Since the slaves are misbehaving (OWS) they need to turn up the heat-especially as it seems likely that their homes may be occupied sooner than later. As we push the envelope, they push military rule. Who will get there first? Probably they will. Consider your tactics carefully.
