Forum Post: Costco or Walmart?

I have seen a lot of negative stuff about Wallmart as well as recommendations to protest them. Why nothing on Costco? Ok, I know all the stuff about Costco's better pay and benefits but how about the fact that Costco robs a community of 10 full time jobs for every 1 it creates. Costo creates 1 job per $967,000 of economic activity vs. 1 per $170,000 for Wallmart and 1 per $100,000 for a typical small business. Doesn't anyone care about that? Sure Costco is better to its employees, but they can afford to be since they hire so few of them relative to their total sales.

Maybe because one has to be a member of Costco so it's not worth speaking about. It's much smaller than Walmart so less employees.

I don't know.I don't go to either one L

I am an assistant manager at a Walmart supercenter. You do not envy me. I write about my experience at walmartianblog.com.

I did some research and all I find is possitive pieces on Costco and negative pieces on Wallmart. Comprisons between the two focus on pay and benifits rather than jobs lost in a community. While I fully get the pay and benefits argument, I don't understand why the Costco chearleaders and Walmart detractors ignore the fact that costco employs so few per retail dollar spent vs small business and even Walmart. I mean, you can afford to pay better if 1 employee replaces the job of 5 or 10.

Do Americans really care ? I've asked so many people why they use the automated cashier machines, that definitely destroy jobs. I've asked many demographics and it comes down to doing what's best for me, to hell with anything else. Same with Costco.

Automation is our future and the faster it happen the better. Monetary system is obsolete.

I think costco is not as widespread. I have never even seen a Costco but there are two Walmarts in my town. I know that Walmart gets like 90% of their stuff from China. Is Costco the same?

probably..

I have both in my town. The merchandise is similar and most appears to be from china. We just lost a lot of mom and pops when costco opened but I see nothing negative about them

Being so much smaller they've probably just been flying under the radar. Why don't you do some research on them and post any negative info on this site. OWS is a new movement and we've just started some of these ideas. Wal-Mart on the other hand has been investigated for years so their bad press is all over the net. Besides, we need as many people as possible investigating as many corporations as possible to separate the good guys from the bad, for potential boycott purposes.
