Forum Post: Control the Troll - Here's How

Posted 11 years ago on Feb. 23, 2013, 11:44 a.m. EST by oldJohn (-646)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

A arduous and lengthy sign in process would eliminate sock puppet trolling. After signing in, a user can only post once per day for two weeks after which he can post at will. Once a user is banned, he will have to wait a long time before starting again under a new username.

Also, proxy servers can be circumvented quite easily by having a moderator approving new users. With a Google search on the new user's IP a moderator can instantly tell if it's a proxy server. Those users are rejected. If a user's IP is banned, this means he would have to use someone else's computer to create a new user since a proxy server won't work.

Using these two methods, sock puppet based trolls will get tired very fast.

You should open your forum.

[+] -7 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

We need a community run forum, not one run by one or a few people.

[-] 5 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Open your own forum asswipe. You don't like it here ? Fine - Leave.

[+] -6 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

I like it here. It's fun. However, I think a community run forum would better serve Occupy and the revolution. This forum shouldn't be judged by whether we like it or not, but by asking if it is useful or not. There are many places where we can get entertained. What we need is a forum to make Occupy all that it can be.

[-] 4 points by beautifulworld (23771) 11 years ago

Truth is you don't care one way or the other about this forum. You are paid to post here by a pro-corporate group.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

1st sentence = absolute truth.

2nd sentence = ?

I mean who would pay such a boob?

Never Mind.

Answer = corpoRAT boobs

[-] 4 points by beautifulworld (23771) 11 years ago

He's definitely paid to post here. He has no interest in the movement, that is all pretend. His interest is to divide. He should be shunned.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

huh - I can see he/it/she (?) is using some of it's sockpuppets ( that it swears it does not use anymore ) to downvote your comment.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

I recommend that he be banned as soon as identified and do not disagree with your recommendation of shunning either. Let it start it's own forum like it keeps on harping about.

[-] 3 points by beautifulworld (23771) 11 years ago

I'm with you. I don't understand why oldJohn, aka Thrasymaque, has not been banned. It appears that he took the forum down for about 10 hours yesterday. I don't get it.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Me neither.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 11 years ago

The light dawns.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Every morning for everyone - of the normal life giver - but more sporadically to individuals for wisdom education awareness it seems.

[+] -4 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

I did not take the forum down, that's why I am not banned. Your fearful delusional mind is playing tricks on you. That's why you don't get much of anything.

[+] -4 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

You may believe what your fearful delusional mind dictates to you.

[-] 3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

If that is how you truly feel - then you should leave here and do it to it. But you have SFB - so you will stay here as a constant irritant - rather then try to do something useful somewhere else - of your own making.

[-] -3 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

A community run forum cannot be of my own making. It needs to be made by the community. That's the goal. And, like I said, I like it here. It's entertaining. Both forums could co-exist. One could come here for entertainment, then on the community run forum to really affect change on the ground.

[-] 3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

No you are here because all of the work has already been done by someone else. Also because your forum would likely just be you and your puppets.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

you are here because all of the work has already been done by someone else.

Exactly.

[-] 3 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

It is so f'n lazy.

[-] -3 points by whaddyathink (-89) from Millville, NJ 11 years ago

Isn't leeching off of other people's work what OWS is all about and advocating everyday???

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

No, Sweet Pea.

[+] -4 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

No, I think a community made forum with a connection to the ground (Occupy's reality) is a great idea. I'm sure it will happen in time.

Do you remember when Occupy stated that it wanted a general assembly on each street corner? Well, some people like you are sick and can't attend general assemblies. Some people are busy. Others might be on vacation. In the real world, many people cannot make it on the ground. Luckily, we live in the age of the Internet. This is why it's important to connect the forum to actual affinity groups. So that what you write here doesn't get forgotten in the database. So that what you write here actually has an impact on Occupy.

Why are you satisfied with a site that only let's you spit in the wind? Wouldn't you like a site that makes it so your words are heard by those on the ground.

Don't you want a Bridge To The Ground?

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

The bridge is fully in place and in operation - it is you that would deny this fact - in perpetuity and absurd-um.

If you truly believed what you spout - um - spew - er - say - Well then you would be gone and developing your site only to perhaps return to invite those you like to come and join you.

But you are a sham.

[-] 0 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

Where is this Bridge To The Ground? Do you meet users here who actually participate in Occupy event and activities. Apart from the only real user, Odin, there is none. You certainly have no connection to Occupy.

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Sure I do - but you can either not see that - or refuse to see it. Other social groups are advertising OWS events now - even as OWS advertises others events.

Don't bother responding with more of your lame BS - as it is old - repetitive - boring - and empty complaints - of yours.

[-] -2 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

Stop invading my page and I'll stop responding. Take a walk outside. Exercise will do you good. You really think you are the old chief priest in charge of this site don't you? You're completely addicted to this place. You never go out. You have no family. Just your bed and a computer, and this site. Sad.

[-] -1 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Even more insults?

I See Your True Colors and they aren't shining through.

Kind of drab actually.

Opaque, like your hypocrisy.

[-] -1 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

Are you to DKAtoday what Robin is to Batman?

[-] 0 points by shoozTroll (17632) 11 years ago

Only if you are lost in toonland.

Are you? Because that would seem to be the case.

I still want you to answer the question you've played eel not to answer.

That's all.

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Then put up or shut up.

[-] -3 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

I am putting up. I'm sharing my idea for a community run website. I'm also sharing my idea to stop stock puppets. Everything starts by sharing ideas. This is putting up. Two great ideas. Where are your ideas? You're just on the rag. Constantly. No ideas. Just anger. Frustration. Rag. Quick, change tampons.

[-] 4 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Your small penis is no excuse. Open your forum. You can do it.

[-] -2 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

The forum must be a community effort, unlike this one. That is the goal. FWIW, I don't have a penis.

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

That makes it even better. If you build it, they will come.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

lol - what the rest of "it's" own identities?

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Yep and all supporters.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

I don't know about them all being supporters - I mean - have you never seen it have an argument with itself? It is the only kind of argument it can win even while losing. {:-])

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Ya, that's pretty much what I am referring to. What a grand time that would be.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Yep.

It could stop being a pain in the ass here - and be productive (?) elsewhere - to it's own satisfaction.

On a site of it's own communities making.

Yayyyy

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (13725) 0 minutes ago

I firmly believe that if Thras is all that and a bag of chips then it would be a great opportunity to demonstrate this. It would be a "community" effort. All that bs could be useful. Finally. ↥twinkle ↧stinkle permalink

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Reality has never been it's strong suit. So. I guess that should not prove to be a problem for it - in convincing itself.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (13725) 4 minutes ago

Yep. Or proving itself to have the capacity to create a better forum. ↥twinkle ↧stinkle permalink

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Oh - I think "it" would have an absolutely lovely time arguing amongst it's self's. Somewhere far far away.

[-] -1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Yep. Or proving itself to have the capacity to create a better forum.

[-] -1 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

No, we must decide as a community how it should be built. That was the problem with this forum. On the ground, Occupy played it correctly. They started with a meeting on September 17th, 2011. They then made decisions as a community on how the protest would be run. Only then did it become practice. This is how the new site must be created. This is fundamental in creating a community website, it must be planned by the community as well.

[-] 2 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

We did as a community. Everyone has decided, you should get your own forum.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

Right-on this forum site community has decided that the perennial troll should leave this forum and try to do it's own thing.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

I support her efforts Really.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

In Total Agreement Then.

Keep up with the pep talks and I shall do the same.

[-] 1 points by GirlFriday (13671) 6 minutes ago

That's exactly what I mean,. ↥twinkle ↧stinkle permalink

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

OHHhhh - that that should not be named - is trying to claim it is female? I am so sorry - women already have enough attackers.

By supporting it's efforts - do you mean for it to leave and start it's own forum?

Cause I can get behind that!!!!!!!!!

[-] -1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

That's exactly what I mean,.

[-] -1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

jart? Me too - but how did she get in this conversation? I said the perennial troll ( that which should not be named ) should go.

[-] -1 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Thras is saying that she doesn't have a penis. Thus, I am taking that to mean that Thras is female.

[-] -2 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

I'm actually getting a lot of support for a community based forum.

[-] 3 points by GirlFriday (17435) 11 years ago

Again, I support your efforts. Really.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

So? Go away and do it then!

[-] -2 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

See - there is your problem again - this is an open forum - you post and individuals will comment - you have a hard time with dealing with that - how will you address that on your community forum - which I hope you will be leaving here soon to start.

I have no problem. You can keep commenting. It makes you happy to think you're the high priest of these woods. That's fine. You and your Twinkle Team can even upvote all your comments as usual. That's good too, it creates links to my postings. Keep bumping all you want.

[-] -2 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

Again you play (?) at being brain dead. Invite your community to join you in a chat-room somewhere ( far far away ) and get down to business.

Are you the high priest on this forum? I'll have you notice that you're invading my posting, I'm not invading yours. Perhaps you should leave. I reserve this page for adults and a good formal debate based on arguments, and not your so loved logical fallacies.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 11 years ago

A community forum must be planned by the community, made by the community, run by the community, and used by the community. It's not a question of doing it by myself. That's not how a community effort works.

You are a smart guy....I'll give you that.... especially so with the with your IT knowledge, and the physycological divional efforts you try to propagate on here

Even though I lack that IT knowledge that you have, I know that IP bans can be circumvented, and I know bullshit when i here it time and again

[-] -2 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

IP bans can be circumvented by using a proxy server. In the OP, I explained a way to stop users from using such a server. After a user signs up, a moderator first looks at the account to validate it. This strategy is used on many forum nowadays. The moderator can check the IP of the user and know if it came from a proxy server. If it did, he simply erases the user instantly, if not, then the user is granted access to the site. That means a user can only sign up with a real IP.

[-] 2 points by frovikleka (2563) from Island Heights, NJ 11 years ago

I believe that you are wrong about that, but my case with you does not fall or rise on that alone

We still have that nasty little problem of the divisiveness that you promote on here to deal with

Not to mention the irreparable lack of trust that many of us have for you now

I would say the best course for you to take is to concentrate on the issues, build some trust up, and then come back here in a year or so, and reintroduce your plan

And besides, I trust the radicals who run this site, but i also know they are stressed,

And it is not that they do not want to give up some power, it's just they want to be careful who they give it to

[-] -2 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

I believe that you are wrong about that, but my case with you does not fall or rise on that alone

Why believe? Why not do some fact checking. Then you'll know I'm right instead of believing that I'm not.

We still have that nasty little problem of the divisiveness that you promote on here to deal with

I have been promoting a community run website. That is the opposite of being divisive. You are trolling me using logical fallacies. You are unable to form a single argument against the idea of a community run website. You are the one who comes off as being divisive to people who read this page.

Not to mention the irreparable lack of trust that many of us have for you now

Appeal to motive. Judge the ideas, not the proposer. You're an adult. You should be able to do that by now.

I would say the best course for you to take is to concentrate on the issues, build some trust up, and then come back here in a year or so, and reintroduce your plan

I am concentrating on the issue, but you are trolling me with off-topic rants. I'd love to talk about the arguments for and against a community run website, but you're obsessed with logical fallacies and trolling my comments.

And besides, I trust the radicals who run this site, but i also know they are stressed,

They did ban you many times, so it seems they know a troll when they see one.

And it is not that they do not want to give up some power, it's just they want to be careful who they give it to

False. They are autocratic. They don't like to share power. They don't like to work as a community to solve problems, they like to dictate what solutions we should use.

[-] 1 points by frovikleka (2563) from Island Heights, NJ 11 years ago

At this point, i will never be able to separate the 'idea' from the person proposing it, you

Call it a... 'fault'.... of mine if you like, but defending and being able to put faces on the people that you criticize constantly....I call it LOYALTY,

Within the parameters of TRULY wanting a better Occupy, yes there is room for constuctive criticisms, but your's is more akin to running people into the dirt

Being there for each other, loyalty is an attribute we will all need in our struggle if we are going to succeed

~Odin~

[-] -3 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

It's a fault of yours. It's falling prey to logical fallacies instead of logic.

If only Forrester was back. He used arguments. He wasn't ranting furiously and uselessly all the time. He was smart enough to see the importance of a Bridge to the Ground.

You know Occupy no longer supports this forum right?

[-] 2 points by frovikleka (2563) from Island Heights, NJ 11 years ago

Yes Forrester was a likeable guy, wasn't he? lol

So was Tenacity;, and he had it too......eh?

No I did not know that Occupy does not support this forum,

But I could see there might have been a rift at one time in the past

And considering who is providing this news so gleefully, and what he has falsely accused me of

And considering he doesn't know what I know,

I would say that is patently false, and it is a sign of yet more of your mud-slinging divisiveness

~Odin~

[-] -1 points by oldJohn (-646) 11 years ago

Why limit yourself to guessing when you can check facts?

[-] 1 points by frovikleka (2563) from Island Heights, NJ 11 years ago

That's all,.... after the lies you have told?
