Forum Post: CALL TO ACTION:  Please help recruit cyclists & fitness buffs to do winter training at Occupy Wall Street occupation.  They can easily power the generators needed to run the food and medical tents, the computers and some heat sources to prevent frostbite

CALL TO ACTION:

(Thanks to efschumacher for suggesting this idea).

Please help recruit cyclists and fitness buffs to do their winter training at Occupy Wall Street and Occupy DC or any of the other conveniently located occupations across the country.

Free spin class anyone? Any spin class instructors or participants out there want to get in superb shape, meet new friends and help the movement? Cyclists can easily power the generators needed to run the food and medical tents, the computers and some heat sources.

Serious cyclists need to keep riding through the winter, with limited safe opportunities due to weather and dark. It is certain that cyclists are of the 99%, in view of the gasoline-centric nature of current culture, and the current push in the Senate to squeeze Open Streets funding out of the Transportation bill.

Are you a cyclist or fitness buff or an engineer? Do you run fitness programs or trainer races?  Would you volunteer some regular hours to keep the occupations powered?  Just by doing your regular training, you'd be helping to provide a heat source to prevent frostbite, helping to provide heat source for cooking, helping to provide power to medical technicians and helping to provide power to communications and computer systems.

A great visual, dozens of bikes on trainers all hooked up to generators.  Picture these all lined up in a section of the park, cyclists signing up online and taking shifts.

Please help spread the word among the cycling and fitness community.  Encourage others to email friends who might participate.  Email bicycling websites / magazines. fitness magazines and newsletters, etc.  If you are a serious cyclist, please ask each of your friends if they'll take a shift and suggest they ask ten more to do the same.

Do your winter training and help power the heroes who are standing up for our rights.

the human body is an efficient and versatile machine

Absolutely. It can help power the movement...literally!

[-] 3 points by efschumacher (74) from Gaithersburg, MD 12 years ago

Well I'm also thinking of this as an inspiration for cyclists, and to encourage more people to ride bikes. We're not going to measure the virtue of this effort in 'miles ridden', but in Kilowatt hours generated. I'm thinking of this as having a competitive element, and a spectacle and entertainment too. If each bike/turbo generator has a big clock behind with the output wattage, and each participant is given a receipt at the end of his/her stint stating the number of watts generated then:

  • you can have a fun and very watchable competition, and
  • those with training logs can directly log the results as a contribution to their training for next season.

Look at http://www.rollapaluza.com for how this has been working for a couple of seasons now to generate the interest (though they aren't generating the watts yet).

Oh, and contact the cycling clubs. They will organize rotas of their members. The nationwide list of USA Cycling affiliated racing clubs is here: http://www.usacycling.org/clubs/.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

This is unbelievably cool. I love the way you're envisioning this. I totally agree with how this can be gratifying and entertaining for people doing the riding and people watching. The receipt idea is great as is measuring kilowatts rather than miles. I'm on it with spreading the word to the sources you mention.

Great idea!!

Really hope this works. Do your workout at OWS instead of the gym. Get yourself in shape and power the movement!!!

In Solidarity with 'OWS' & this thread, I re-post the following :

The Entire State & City Bureaucracy been co-opted by Bloomberg & his Cronies to try to oust 'OWS'. You can bet that there's a Fed. Task Force / 'OccupyCom.' there to try to stymie 'OWS' & The 99% Movement & it's NO accident that as the weather turns colder, Buttberg & Co. want to make OWS' life extra hard. The 1% Hate oWs & will do everything that THEY can to Close It. Thus, I post the following :

1) @ 'OWS' Tech-Heads : Maybe Wiring Up Groups Of 12v Car -Batteries into Battery Banks may be an idea + http://www.pedalpowergenerator.com/ etc.

2) 'OWS' will need to call up many more peddle powered generating rigs. Thus : http://www.windstreampower.com/Human_Power_Generator.php and http://tinyurl.com/yep4m7n .

3) Also a Very Interesting Link re. 'Peddle Power in NY': http://inhabitat.com/pedal-powered-generators-to-light-up-times-square-on-new-years-eve/ ! A Very 'Illuminating' Link ...

4) Further, re. Electricity Powered "BY NATURAL (x)", please see : http://katstoolbox.com/feedyourhealth/2011/09/bicycle-powered-concert-wtg-new-york/ ! A Rather 'Resounding' Link Pertaining to Past & Present Events in NYC!

5) For An Insight Into The Kind Of 'Off The Shelve' Unit That is Available : http://www.theselfsufficiencyshop.co.uk/181-gazelle-pedal-powered-generator.html .

Finally, there are NO Shortages of Willing Volunteers who'd happily devote time & effort so as to generate electricity for OWS + It's gr8 for keeping WARM & Staying Fit ! You Can't Get a more Virtuous Circle ! Indeed, a chat stream poster ('Timalmighty') has suggested a "I Peddled 99 miles (or 'kliks'!) For The 99%" pin/badge for those who wish to do so & would like their effort recognised.

Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[-] 2 points by Scout (729) 12 years ago

absolutely brilliant. You could have a tent full of people doing it simultaneously and all those people that currently pay exorbitant fees to go to " California WOW " can switch over to doing their fitness training with OWS through the winter.PLUS think of the positive publicity

[-] 2 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

It's a win-win-win-win-win

[-] 2 points by Scout (729) 12 years ago

but most of all is the thought of wiping off the smirks on the faces of the banksters and the authorities who probably thought the game was over with the arrival of snow

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Totally agree. And yes they really were counting on that weren't they? Poor saps. Do your workout at OWS instead of the gym. Get yourself in shape and power the movement!!!

Look, I can create a wind generator sensitive enough to work in as little as 2 - 5 mph winds... my issue.... If I do this, I cannot afford a patent, I would like to release it as a free open source project..... but I fear theft... I dont want corps to steal the design, patent it, and then screw the people! I will have to discuss it with the designer.... Any one know hot to release a product free for use?

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Release it open source like the guy who invented polio vaccine! Hero!!!!!! And launching it at occupy sites across the world would be perfect debut!!!!

[-] 2 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Let's power the occupations with a source of energy no may our can take away!

Please post here if you can volunteer tech skills to set up the calendar in a troll-proof way.

[-] 1 points by JumpStreet (70) 12 years ago

Yeah...and we can get all those fat asses on Wall Street to come down on their coffee latte breaks and lunch breaks and caviar breaks to help run the bikes. Jump on one. In their suits and ties. Uh huh. Sure they will. And where they gonna shower after they spend three-four hours sweating it up on the bikes in the cold? Keep thinking. The cold has already frozen what part of your brain was workin... logic. Think logic. It will come to ya. But it has to be YOUR idea...otherwise it won't be ANY good now will it?

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Are you on crack?

[-] 1 points by JumpStreet (70) 12 years ago

Yeah....I'm on ass crack...which is the power we are talking about here. WTF? You're kidding me right? And what do you plan on doing after that? Build a pyramid?

You do know that head sources draw a lot of amps, right?

More Amps = Harder to turn over generator.. Not saying that it cannot be done, but think about what you are asking.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

I think it's beginning to happen. See video half way down (video is about the new bikes, not vets). http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2011/11/02/veterans-join-occupy-wall-street_n_1071751.html

[-] 1 points by slinkeey (244) 12 years ago

A heating source will drain down a battery pretty fast. Even a deep cycle

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Necessity is the mother of invention. This occupation through the 2011-2012 winter may be ground zero for cold weather living innovation and power generation innovation. Time for the MIT men and women to kick it into gear and innovate. Google guys. Where are you?

[-] 1 points by slinkeey (244) 12 years ago

You know, something really usefull could come out of this and then some OWSers may market it..

The sad thing is that OWS is anti-business, so if something great came out of it, we would never see it come to market..

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Whoever said OWS was anti-business? I own a company that employs a large number of people and has been in business nearly 15 years. I'm not anti-business. I'm anti-rigged system. Rigged systems are bad for business in addition to being harmful in all sorts of ways to people and the environment. Sustainability is good for business. A lot of corporate leaders are good but many are shortsighted assholes who would run this country into a ditch if it bumped their 3 rd quarter earnings. It's those jerks that need guardrails and congress (a "new" or "renewed" congress fueled by OWS) is just the entity to erect those guardrails.

Most business people I know think this movement is the best thing that's happened to America and American business in a long time. Hell, even stockbrokers and investment advisors are excited for integrity to return to the marketplace. A regulated market is a fair healthy market.

[-] 1 points by mr5roses (2) 12 years ago

Can bike-generated electricity be efficiently stored in a battery? I'm picturing stations all over NYC where people can hop on for five minutes to an hour.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

I think it's beginning to happen. See video half way down (video is about the new bikes, not vets). http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2011/11/02/veterans-join-occupy-wall-street_n_1071751.html

[-] 1 points by dantes44 (431) from Alexandria, VA 12 years ago

Why do you need cyclists though? Admittedly, they would be more efficient, but regular OWS folks would be more than willing to contribute. At least I assume they would.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Good point. I think it's beginning to happen. See video half way down (video is about the new bikes, not vets). http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2011/11/02/veterans-join-occupy-wall-street_n_1071751.html

[-] 0 points by dantes44 (431) from Alexandria, VA 12 years ago

Really. That is pretty frickin' awesome. I would love to have that just to power my cell/laptop/tablet. Seriously, make devices that only can be regenerated using that. Help with American obesity.

And therising, I give people here a lot of sh*t about some insane ideas. But really, I would love to see this mainstream.

[-] 1 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

I totally agree. There are dozens of stand along full kits on Internet but no one has done the "i" version which is beautifully designed / wholly integrated / well-marketed and most of all super simple / no instructions needed. Invent that and you'll be rich AND save the world.

With the help of cyclists the occupations can defy conventional wisdom and not die out with the onset of winter.

[-] 1 points by rockyracoon (10) 12 years ago

YES! Wonderful idea! and about the wind generator, once it's in public domain, it's no longer novel, and not patentable. go for it, share idea and let chips fall where they will... who knoes maybe some corp will hire you to help with mass production :)

The average professional cyclist can sustain about 6 watts per kilogram of body mass. That means that a professional cyclist of reasonable size can power up to 7 (SEVEN!!!) 60 watt light bulbs for about 5 hours (before getting tired). It would take about 7 cyclists to run one space heater the size of a bowling ball. You might want to rethink this idea.

[-] 2 points by therising (6643) 12 years ago

Thanks but your figures are wrong. Nevertheless, you are doing some good.!  Since you are a troll, I just donated another dollar for Occupy Wall Street.  Trolldom has been monetized.  This is fun :) http://occupywallst.org/forum/we-have-monetized-trolldom-for-the-benefit-of-the-/#comment-223231 . Here is a document stating road-race average outputs of six professional cyclists: http://www.saris.com/aboutus/PTS/HowDoYouStackUpWithWorkout.pdf

Lance Armstrong could power ALMOST 8 light bulbs over 7 or so hours given the right amount of food: http://www.cio.com/article/29173/Lance_Armstrong_Cycling_Power

Are you disputing that a light bulb takes 60 watts to run?

If my math is wrong, please correct me. 420 watts / 60 watts = 7 light bulbs.
