Big news this week about American company Blue Coat Systems Inc. After activists discovered that Blue Coat Internet "filtering" equipment somehow got into Syrian hands and is being used to censor communications in Syria's democracy movement, Blue Coat revealed that they have no idea how 14 filtering devices they sent to their Dubai distributor in 2010 -- a distributor they refuse to name -- wound up, illegally, in Syrian hands.
But activists revealed that Blue Coat equipment dating as far back as year 2000 has been used by Syria to censor its people.
It is illegal for American companies to trade with Syria. One of a few brakes our corporate friendly government places on commerce and yet it does not work.
An investigation is now ongoing, according to media reports, for something that apparently, according to some reports has been going on for over a decade, at least.
Blue Coat has experienced people at the helm, including professionals experienced in the Middle East. They aren't just out of the garage by any means. So, I want to congratulate Blue Coat, its Board of Directors, its CEO and senior officers and engineers for raking in profits on the backs of one of the most brutal crackdowns on democracy in the world today.
In the course of its crackdown, Syria has tortured and killed young teenagers, children basically. Kudos Blue Coat for exporting America's values to Syria.
It is appropos that this news breaks around the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Oh, what some have done with their liberty makes us hang our heads in shame.
For several stories on the Blue Coat news, just go to Google News or other news search engine and search Blue Coat Systems. And be thankful you can do that search. Thanks to Blue Coat, in Syria, you can't. .
Wow censoring speech sounds familiar. Here at OWS Forums they just delete your account if they disagree with you. Hense my new username with the number 2 added.
These aren't laughing matters. Let's assume for a moment that you are a "youth" since your handle might suggest you are.
In Syria a thirteen year old boy was tortured for hours by government forces. His organs were mutilated while he was alive and finally they killed him. Photos of his body, which have been verified, are difficult to even look at. He was just a kid.
I think it is inappropriate for you to make flip remarks from the comfort of our country. You too, choose to do little with the freedom we have. More Americans should appreciate our freedom and guard it more carefully.
No one is censoring you. You have no evidence that you have been censored by OWS. OWS is freezing their tushes in a concrete park on a cold day so you have the freedom to take pot shots at them and other people. So count your blessings
Well then I suggest you go to Syria and protest there, or to China when you want to protest environmental stewardship. We're the last country you should be railing against.
Blue Coat Systems has no right to sell equipment to Syria. They are an American company and democracy here needs Americans here fighting for it. You go to Syria if you like the alterantive so much
"MisguidedYouth2" ia a hate-filled, foul-mouthed, grammatically-challenged, rabidly Un-American TROLL. What is a TROLL? A troll is a TRAITOR, as he is against upholding the Constitution and American values. Most trolls are PAID, many of them are openly and cynically self-confessed.
Just like "RichardGates", "DoNotLoot", "Tednugent", "OccupyEverything", "brianobx", "Hilscher", "HilscherBanned", "blkflg", "gr57", "Badhornet', "Earnit", "thebeach", "Jonas", "Joeschmoe1000" "americanfreedom69", "uslynx81", "therealdeal2011", "1percenter4life", "superspiff", "suwata", "sudoname", "hahaha", "Momcalled", "justfactsallowed", "ArrestAllCEOS", "AntiCorp", "MikeyD", "MovingTwoChina", and "DukeNukem299", "dukeNukem347", "Moving8China", "MovingToReelection", "Rob","angelofmercy", RicoSuave", "AllThe Way", "MisguidedYouth" was outed as a TROLL ages ago. . All I can say, is if they are doing it at the request or on the payroll of someone else, they should all do an online search of something called "The Milgram Experiment" and think hard about what kind of person they want to be.
What are the experiments conclusions?
That all too often people will follow orders, or take a paycheck, even if they are convinced it violates someone's rights. Just musing on comments people have posted where they are suspicious there arepeople being paid to troll. All very silly.
I think it's time for every American to decide what kind of person they want to be. We all had to know deep down there was something wrong with what we were doing and it wasn't sustainable, but still we needlessly consumed and polluted our way into this mess. I hope this is not the last gasp of a moral people before we get the pillow of capitalism held to our face.
... In our sleep. :)
China is up to number 8???!!!
Is this China on unemployment or is someone paying this person? China has to be at it 24/seven to stay that active on this forum.
Well, Blue Coat is doing a fine job of being Turn Coats too. This is America.
Blue Coat and every other American corporation is an ambassador of America overseas. Thus, it is not hard to see how a country like ours gets into endless wars. Our history of wars coming out of our supposedly peaceful efforts over a century of promoting our business interests overseas is nothing short of a tragedy.
Lesson 1: Don't put your foreign policy in the hands of Wall Street.
This admittedly is an odd item, in that Blue Coat's equipment landed in Syria against one of the few laws prohibiting American businesses from interfering with self determination in other countries, but for that it is only more instructive. Even when we forbid something, it doesn't work
