Forum Post: Berkeley Faculty Votes to Condemn Chancellor for Police Violence

The Berkeley Academic Senate voted 336 to 34 on Monday afternoon to “condemn” Chancellor Robert Birgeneau for his administration’s “authorization of violent responses to nonviolent protests over the past two years,” culminating in the police attack on nonviolent Occupy Cal demonstrators on Nov. 9. A million people have seen the YouTube video of that attack.
The faculty also declared that it “opposes all violent police responses to non-violent protest, whether that protest is lawful or not.” And they demanded that the chancellor and his top staff “develop, follow and enforce university policy to respond non-violently to non-violent protests, to secure student welfare amidst these protests, and to minimize the deployment of force and foster free expression and assembly on campus.”

I salute the Berkeley Academic Senate for acting and voting like true American patriots. Our strength comes from omnihumanity (the entire human race) being connected through the Internet, our not-so-secret weapon. I have friends in Europe and Asia who follow every act of oppression against American citizens and others who love America and what it once stood for. Many of them have pledged never to visit America again unless the assault on protesters ends. They are among the million or so viewers of the YouTube video of the police attack on nonviolent Occupy Cal demonstrators on November 9th. No foreign visitor should set foot on American soil unless and until the violence against peaceful protesters ends.

This is good to hear. Will it be effective though? What if Chancellor Birgeneau and the police use violence again? Are there real repercussions? How much weight does a condemnation from this faculty carry?

Robert Brigeneau should authorize some police brutality on the Berkley Academic Senate for being so lame.
