Forum Post: Being Anonymous on FB, Twitter, Public Forums and Message Boards...

Posted 12 years ago on March 6, 2012, 2:41 p.m. EST by Marlow (1141)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

..is now being Challenged in Court.

I use my name.. so, i have no fear of the Law stopping everyone from using Alias ID's.. ( I have a Very Controversial Web Site.. received Many threats.. etc.,)

IF, they take the anonymity out of posting what damage does it Cause?

What Free Speech is Covered Anonymously? If you wanted to fight it., you would have to use your Real Name anyway.

It would Sure stop a lot of those Threats.. and the kind of 'Bashing' that goes on with impunity.

Having to use your real name.. .. well.. lets see how many Cowards would keep posting their garbage..!

Just my thoughts on what's happening.

Great idea, so not only will the government have authority to arrest anybody, but now they'll know exactly who to arrest too.

Idiot.

You are not as Anonymous as you might believe using Alias' and Cute Named IDs...

Your IP Address is your Identity.

What you publish everywhere with 'User Names' .. is Already in Data bases under your REAL Name IP address.. So , it's already a Joke that your 'Incognito' on any site..

What i am agreeing w/ for this Case is that there have been too many people harmed by the so called 'anonymous' poster and Bloggers.

Like yelling 'Fire' in a theater... and thinking they can get away with breaking the laws of Free Speech gone too far.

I have been an Activist for Human Rights my entire Adult life. A devout Liberal.. and Still working for Justice in the System..

But the Net has NOT been Elevated by any means of Honor well enough in this Society that still thinks like 9 year olds!

Being an Adult, is Hard for most. It's the Very Reason there are Trolls and Bashers that attack on personal levels with abandon for the Mere Joy of it.

Time we monitor ourselves and grow up!

Truth.

There is no hiding from those who know how to look.

So do not be afraid to contribute, those watching already know your here. Let them know exactly why your here.

To fight greed and corruption to make a better world for all. How better to go on record then that.

except no one believes they are in danger in a crowded room with few exits

rather most are in the safety of their home

true that about the ip, but there is still a blanket of anonymity because unless someone brings someones specific IP address to the Internet host attention. The poster will remain anonymous to the rest of us.

Free.. true THAT too..but there are Rules and there are Ethics of Standards.. and if We cant keep up Either.. then we need to be lead to do so. Rumors and out and out Lies sent out and published in posts and comments are Against the Rules and Standards.. Some, to a Very Harmful result.

I went around with someone a few years ago that asked for the same thing. Her son had been killed in an accident and she was reading the paper on line and there was a shlew of comments that was so derogatory in nature, and so far from the truth, that she was heartbroken. She firmly believed that the anonymity was destructive. I hadn't thought about it from her stand point (and I felt like shit for a good while) and I do agree with her.

I will often read the papers on line and there are also pieces of information that come to the front that might not if there was no anonymity because they could lose their job. I think that people need to realize that the other side of this spectrum will be used to silence people.

There has to be a happy medium here. There is a state that is trying to make it so that you cannot be fired for posting on FB. I don't use Twitter, people get fired all the time for using it.

GF.. A 'Medium' on whether you are anonymous or not.. is one THIN line!. ( u becha..) And your story seems to be echoed on this thread. I dare say that most of us are not afraid to speak out.. and those who are,.. are likely NOT part of any solution.

.. I wrote on my FB.. " If you cant say it with Humor or Reason.. i'm not listening."

You GF, use an alias.. I have no doubt in the World that if you used your First Name.. it would be of no consequence.. I would respect your efforts.

( i do NOW, so no difference, means no matter. )

Yep, I do use an alias. The World is not a kind and pretty place, Marlow.

Well, yeah. How many working teachers do you know of that post online regularly? Of those that I know, I can count on one hand.

[-] 2 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

my brother and my sister

[-] 0 points by GirlFriday (17435) 12 years ago

Most teachers are republican and cannot read.

There is no such thing as true anonymity on the Net, but as it exists here in casual conversation, I think it's a great tool; others would agree - just ask Franklin.

But in any case, the legislation is unenforceable.
