Shooting death near Occupy Oakland prompts calls for camp to disband

By Scott Johnson, Angela Woodall, Matt Krupnick and Robert Salonga Posted: 11/11/2011 07:08:46 AM PST Updated: 11/11/2011 07:56:00 AM PST

The scene was relatively quiet early Friday morning around Occupy Oakland and a shrine has been erected near the spot where a man was shot and killed the previous night.

Officials have not yet released the man's name, pending notification of next of kin, and are only saying that he may have been in his 20s.

The shrine, however, names him as "Alex". Lit by about 100 candles, it carries messages pinned to poster board that say "We love you Alex," "You will not be forgotten," and "Go in light and love."

....

"Everyone is focusing on Occupy, but this guy has a family," said Todd Walker, a resident who works with troubled Oakland youth, "Everyone is worried about a patch of grass, but the problem is too many murders in Oakland."

Conservative logic:

Somebody was shot in Harlem, time to close down Manhattan.

Great Gatsby, the party's over

The downtown camp is quite shady and I don't think it'd be so bad to move it. They have 2 camps though, one is by the lake.

If the UC Berkeley protests really get underway, I think they will find another home here. (BTW, berkeley is next to oakland)

just a BART station or two away

yeah, a 15 minute ride to downtown berkeley, which is a 5-10 minute walk to both occupy berkeley (MLK park) and sproul plaza (location of UC protests). Berkeley knows protesting =)

A guy gets killed near an occupation and conservatives call for the elimination of the OWS movement.

The banking system crashes the economy and conservatives call for resolutions affirming the US motto "In God We Trust".

Go figure.

don't need to figure - with all of America's for the last 30 years, the R solution is gay marriage, flag burning, abortion, now one week vacation for every two weeks worked, DADT -
just tie up the government so it cant fix anything

The encampment should stay

But, it is time for the Oakland City Council to voluntarily leave. Downtown shootings have occurred long before Occupy Oakland. So, it seems that they are more a consequence of the Oakland City Council than the encampment.

Just how stupid do you have to be to think that turning off lights make things safer. The encampment has been there a month with no incidents, other than riots by riot police. Then after one day with the lights turned off and the City Council causes one death.

Occupy Oakland looks like a war zone of thugs with baggy pants on their bikes, on their cell phones. It's a joke. Of course someone got shot. It is just a big party.

So what do you say about the beating of young Berkeley students by their own town police? I mean, I didn't see too many thugs or a big party at Oakland either. I definitely didn't see one person who deserved to die no matter how they dress or what they ride or who they talk to.

That "beating" came after the sudents backed the police into a corner, outnumbering them 10 to 1. It came after protestors persisted in breaking the law and not dispersing from private property as ordered. It came after a very long insistence to back up and away from the cornered police that was constantly ignored and pushed against.

The police have a duty to uphold the law and that is what they did with non-lethal force in Berkeley. Same with the rubber bullets and tear gas in Oakland - that was after protestors attacked with bottles and rocks FIRST.

I don't condone violence from either side. But when a crowd of yelling, masked 20-year-olds disobey the law; the police have the responsibility to stop them. They have the responsibility to protect the property that is being destroyed. And kudos to them for not retaliating against bottles and rocks with bottles and rocks but dispersion methods.

What you describe is the opposite to SCLC standard protocols.

NOT non-violence.

The police looked a little aggressive in the Berkeley video, IMHO.

The Oakland shooting was one thug shooting some other thug that he was chasing around, and through the occupy camp. It's just people selling drugs and thugging around down there now, with a minority of serious protestors. Shutting it down would do a favor to Occupy at this point.

Hence my post this morning: The Beginning of the End of OWS. Now the authorities have an excuse to break it up and not look bad doing so.

Martin Luther's King's assassination led to a nationwide wave of race riots in Washington D.C., Chicago, Baltimore, Louisville, Kentucky, Kansas City, and dozens of other cities.[127] Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy was on his way to Indianapolis for a campaign rally when he was informed of King's death. He gave a short speech to the gathering of supporters informing them of the tragedy and urging them to continue King's ideal of non-violence.[128] James Farmer, Jr. and other civil rights leaders also called for non-violent action,[129] while the more militant Stokely Carmichael called for a more forceful response.[129]

OWS needs to commit to non-violence.

Call to this number for Southern Christian Leadership Conference:

404.522.1420 -- ask for Damien Conners

SCLC are ready to help with this -- seriously.
