Forum Post: As Trump Surges, New Polls Underscore Corporate Media’s ‘Bernie Blackout’

By Lauren McCauley / Common Dreams

New Wall Street Journal/ NBC News polling numbers out Sunday showed that Donald Trump continues to lead the wide and varied Republican presidential field and—despite increasingly inflammatory rhetoric—reached a new high with 27 percent support.

The latest survey comes on the heels of an analysis by the Tyndall Report which that showed that media coverage of Donald Trump eclipses that of all his rivals from both parties.

According to the study of nightly news programs on NBC, CBS and ABC, Trump has received more network coverage than all the Democratic candidates combined and accounts for 27 percent of all campaign coverage thus far.

What’s more, there appears to be a concerted “blackout” of news about Bernie Sanders, despite similar voter support.

As Eric Boehlert at Media Matters for America pointed out this week, “The network newscasts are wildly overplaying Trump, who regularly attracts between 20-30 percent of primary voter support, while at the same time wildly underplaying Sanders, who regularly attracts between 20-30 percent of primary voter support.”

In fact, ABC World News Tonight devoted a total 81 minutes this year to Donald Trump’s campaign and just about 20 seconds to Sanders’ candidacy—a ratio of 81:1 which Boehlert calls a “stunning revelation.“This comes despite the fact that a recent poll found that Sanders would beat Trump by eight points in the general election.

In a campaign statement, Sanders’ campaign manager Jeff Weavers said that media channels were ignoring the progressive candidate because his campaign is an affront to the corporate-dominated system.

“The corporately-owned media may not like Bernie’s anti-establishment views but for the sake of American democracy they must allow for a fair debate in this presidential campaign,” Weavers said. “Bernie must receive the same level of coverage on the nightly news as other leading candidates.”

The campaign has even begun a petition calling on corporate-owned channels to “start covering Bernie.”

Commenting on the stark divide on Sunday, columnist Juan Cole suggests that with Trump’s anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant messaging propelling some followers to take drastic action, the corporate media may be posing a “danger to society.”

Cole writes:

What better for corporate news. You pretend there isn’t a candidate in the race addressing growing economic inequality or the woes of the working class. You put all the spotlight on someone who insults and even incites against Mexican-Americans, African-Americans and Muslim-Americans. It is a tried and true tactic of the American business class to keep the workers and middle class divided by playing up minor ethnic issues. The end result, however, is fire-bombing of mosques and attacks on minorities and other white hood phenomena familiar from past epochs of American history.

For his part, the Senator from Vermont continues to lead Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire with 50 percent of likely Democratic voters in the state, compared with her 40 percent, according to the latest CNN/WMUR tally. Meanwhile, a Fox News survey released on Sunday found Clinton beats Sanders in Iowa 50 to 36 percent.

Does this help to point out GOP insanity?

According to corp(se)oRATion snews media squawking heads - it is not a snews blackout - Bernie just needs to get hateful and vomit blood while spewing vitriol at groups of people to pour massive amounts of fuel onto hatred - and then - he will be snews worthy!

Corp(se)oRATion snews media squawking heads say that Donald the woman hating racist is relevant in his insane hatred (ratings with the haters - and those who are in need of seeing soap opera crap 24 7 365)) - so they just want Bernie to get insanely hateful and then they will be happy to give him limitless coverage. Snews Media - a public service . . . sorry . . . . I meant disservice!

Wouldn't hurt for him to punch the GOP line-up either - just sayin - it bleeds in a horrible train wreck fashion - and - it leads with the spews media.

The entire concept that the media is liberal has always been insane, no poor people own TV stations.

[-] 1 points by ImNotMe (1488) 8 years ago

Consider:''What the Mainstream Media Won't Tell You About Bernie Sanders' Economic Plan''

''Leading economist's study shows the plan would create a stimulus, but the mainstream media isn't covering it.'' .. and thus, in compliment I think that this following link - is of great importance here too:

''The Myth of the Liberal Media'' ...

''Edward Herman & Noam Chomsky demolish one of the central tenets of our political culture - the idea of the "liberal media." Instead, utilizing a systematic model based on massive empirical research, they reveal the manner in which The News Media, are so subordinated to corporate and conservative interests that their function can only be described as that of "elite propaganda."

So ... "If you want to understand the way a system works, you look at its institutional structure. How it is organized, how it is controlled, how it is funded." [Noam Chomsky]

"The Mainstream Media really represent elite interests, and what the propaganda model tries to do is stipulate a set of institutional variables ... reflecting this elite power, that very powerfully influence the media'' [Edward Herman]

The reason the people say the media is liberal is because the media is always pushing the envelope, it's certainly not conservative.

Compare anything now to 40 years ago.

[-] 2 points by ImNotMe (1488) 8 years ago

Are you really suggesting that the US-MSM is somehow anything other than Corporate, Right Wing and Pro-Neoliberal/Neocon?!!! Forget ''Liberal / Conservative''; it's a HUGE smokescreen!! Further,I've no idea what ''always pushing the envelope'' means! If the whole hour video above was a li'l too much .. here is a much shorter version:

It's easy to insult others and drop key words like the Twinkle Team did. The question is, can you play the game of scholars? Can you play with the big boys of intellect, or are you stuck posting garbage comments and posts indefinitely?

Can you get your head out of your ass?!!! Probably not but have you been sat there all day waiting for attention?!! Why don't you fk off back to Bali and make it up to your wife, Jean? Silly ass! The DNC is going to give it to Hillary, they could care less what you think or vote. These people drop bombs on women and children dude, time to wake up.

[-] 0 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 8 years ago

You are a stupid fool that believes the people have no power, it is a self fulfilling prophecy of course.

You should wake up and understand that someone will win and if you want to have a choice you should make one.

[-] 0 points by turbocharger (1756) 8 years ago

Oh no, the people have a shit ton of power. They always have. They just usually fail to realize it.

Pandering to war criminals and the companies they operate under is not a good use of that power.

When someone slaps the shit out of you for years on end, and then gives you the choice of who you want to smack you around next, you should probably tell them to fuck off as opposed to punking out and giving them what they want.

This isn't difficult to figure out. Its why OWS always said change comes from outside, not from within.

You arent going to change a 100 year old company that changes the rules as they go if you try.

[-] 0 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 8 years ago

First off you are a greedy little piggy that hopes for a GOP win so you can get a tax cut.

As far as the 100 year crap people can take their heads from their asses any time they want and take control, but there will always be con artists like you trying to stop them.

[-] 0 points by turbocharger (1756) 8 years ago

So are you saying the political theme of OWS was wrong or right?

[-] 0 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 8 years ago

The fact that the rich are too damn rich is a fact that OWS did get into the forefront in itself that was a good thing unfortunately it has become an accepted norm in America and the actual wealth inequality has risen a good deal since 2011, I think the failure of many within OWS to acknowledge the obvious fact that the GOP work to make the rich richer prevented it from actually doing anything about the problem they highlighted.

You of course are a greedy little pig that is very happy the rich are getting richer.

[-] 0 points by Shule (2638) 8 years ago

I'm voting for Trump! The way I see it, is that a vote for Trump is a vote for getting a really good looking super-model into the white house. Now that would be fun.

[-] 1 points by Viking (417) 8 years ago

"Fun", how so? Will you be entering the annual White House Easter egg hunt in the hopes that she will be running it? ;)

[-] 1 points by Shule (2638) 8 years ago

I wish they'd invite me. But reality is I won't get to hunt Easter eggs on the White house lawn with a super model. But I'll enjoy just seeing the photos of the event in the news.

[-] 2 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

I invite you to have eyes' cream and watch fireworks in the "haunted" Lincoln bedroom as advertised on AirBnB. Major contributors must be rewarded.

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

Shule may be thinking about a midnight skinny-dipping party with reception in the "haunted" Lincoln bedroom afterwards. Kryptonite type-1 would be very sad missing out on the triangulation action because he got an A+ from political geometry by ramping up the mass incaceration of shady dopey people and the moving of their families to workfare success. Maybe type-1 will just settle for a liaison with the GOOP Pump for business.

I think Shule will surely find the bunny and the eggs in the Civil-War arena. Libertine or death! Eat your heart out, type-1(, or type-2).

[-] 0 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

Trump has great power to elicit disgust from apathetic potential general election voters. That is why he is the Greatest for GOOP nomination!

If he can get Mexico to pay for the Southern Wall to stop drugs, that wouldn't be too bad, either. We should defend the potential caucasian addicts in suburbia and affluencia, too. As for stopping illegal immigrants of the economic type, the wall will be pathetically ineffective because they mostly fly in and overstay their visas. If they are so very poor that they have to walk in, maybe we should have some mercy or discretion for them and their families but breaking our laws absolutely requires penalties (one idea is to have the caught employer pay for the lifetime healthcare and unemployment living expenses of the illegal immigrants and their dependents who will henceforth become registered immigrants). Assess penalties first and dispense Grace later. Terrorists have not infiltrated much from the Mexican border. I thank Mexico for that. They have mostly come in through the Canadian border so the Southern Wall will be in the wrong place.

The Southern Wall is his ploy to steer public money, whether from Mexico or not, into his real estate construction business. It's no different from the pharma-lawyer-prison complex instigating drug addiction and incarceration or the military-industrial-con-gressional complex instigating worldwide war games to sell deaths, disabilities, and disintegrations. Trump supporters probably don't get this point.

He plans to cut tax rates and he will benefit much more than most average proles. It's the same old GOOP plot to loot the treasury. Dumb people rob banks. Smart people loot banks through ownership buyouts. Now our treasury/government are far more valuable than banks. What's the best way to loot them? By being put in charge of them as the President!

[-] 1 points by Shule (2638) 8 years ago

I know all that. Trump isn't going to do anything sensible for the people if made President, but neither will anyone else. So, then what does it really matter. At least we will get some beautiful people to look at on the eavning news.

As far as Bernie goes, after all his nice rhetoric, which I do favor by the way, he is going to go the way Obama did should he get elected. Somebody is going to pull him into a room, sit him down, and tell him "look you overaged hippie pinko, you do what we tell you to do, or you and your grandkids are getting bullets, and he'll do what he's told. Trump will most likely get the same speech too.

As to the Hag, Hillary, there is no need to give her a speech 'cause she is already on board with the .1% program. Voting for that reptile is a vote for WWIII. Watch the bombs start dropping the day she gets in.

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

I am with you on Trump's supermodel beautiful family. If he wins the Presidency, I hope that he would not pull into government the ilk of Edwin Meese who became the Secretary of the Interior for Ronnie. Guess when I started to suspect dementia in Ronnie? When he appointed the fox to guard the hen house.

Bernie speaks with sincerity - he is the only one amongst the major candidates who seems genuine right now. I, following what I consider reason and love, go for his agenda with some reservations. I absolutely want a major overhaul of our government. If his revolution can do that, I support it. I just don't want the overhaul to gum up the machinery of our government too much. I want to see the transitioning plan for changing car tires and performing engine tune-ups while racing around in our clunker in the Indiana-500 race.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 8 years ago

Question tRump's opponents in the GOP should throw at him (?) = does tRump get his wives off the white slavery market. I mean really it is a disgusting question - but then - tRump has no problem with being disgusting to the extreme at everyone - opponents or not.

Or should the question be a little less disgusting and ask tRUMP if his wife is legal to become 1st lady - ya know - considering foreign birth and all.

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

The GOOP Pump will probably be delighted and very much entertained by the thoughtfulness and inquisitiveness of his opponents.

Like Shule, I love to have a super model "bimbo" First Lady, the more foreign-born and white-slaved, the better. It only goes to show the great social mobility of America. I am sure that she will be absolutely charming to foreign dignitaries and advance the agenda of the U.S. better than a wily prune. Men think with big nuts, small nuts, upper nuts, lower nuts, go nuts, hazard nuts, nuts, nuts, nuts, and most foreign leaders are men with not just power, money, but ... nuts. Great!

Don't forget to enjoy the annual Christmas offering of "The Nutcracker."

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 8 years ago

I was thinking......................as tRump is basically a protest candidate of people who have come to realize that the GOP is never gonna represent them...............and that people are supporting him as basically a way to give the GOP the finger.................as the people are not gonna actually vote for him in a general election............so support for him is kinda like a final nail in the GOP coffin.............considering the rest of the candidates in the GOP are about as popular as the plague...............if HRC does not get the dem nomination for president...............will the GOP ask her to continue her run as the GOP candidate against Bernie and so bail out the GOP? I mean she is more of a republican than she is anything else.

[-] 2 points by turbocharger (1756) 8 years ago

Most likely yes. The two parties work together to maintain the divide and conquer strategy, they're ran by the same people. Everyone knows the Bushs and Clintons are pals, along with the rest of them.

Sanders vs. Trump will be just fine because they are not bought and paid for by either of the establishments, in spite of the Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission decision.

If Trump haters do not materialize with votes for Sanders, the legacy will last at least a generation due to the upcoming Supreme Court nominations. It is never easy to be an "Instrument of God." I admit that we are all in the "Hand of God" whether the alien cow pie hits or not. I suspect that not drinking the prune juice will help.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 8 years ago

Sanders v tRump should be a landslide Bernie win. tRump "is" everything bad about the GOP personified (he is actually no better than Marco Polo or Ted Crud or any of the rest of the insane clown car candidates of the GOP) - but he has the popular support there because he is not a professional politician. People are sick un to death of professional establishment politics.

Still - if support for tRump is real - it just goes to show how insane some people are.

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

With the super-delegates, the Dumbass party may well show how corrupt it is. "Insane" people may have a logic of their own.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 8 years ago

GOP F's with voting process as matter of normal daily operations to remain in office and to get majorities.

Insane supporters of GOP get what they want = self hating abuse!

The election process is totally f"ed up with this BS of super delegates as well as the electoral college etc.

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

The GOOP is full of white-cow (E!mer's perhaps) goo to gum up the voting qualifications of shady people who cannot keep track of identification cards, to remain in office and to manufacture so-called majorities. Gerrymandering maps show how depraved the partisans have been.

I am actually very amazed by what the GOOP has got itself into by fostering racial divisions, religious bigotry, class hatred, etc. The GOOP Pump is just the planted seed of wrath germinating after much persistent watering.

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 8 years ago

hmmmmmm . . . . . long way round to saying tRump is toxic and the haters love it?

[-] 1 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

Exactly for the GOOP Pump but where else could the haters go? Drink lots of prune juice and occupy the outhouse for years? No way! However toxic in the long run, the GOOP Pump offers immediate catharsis, like a good wind of relief. The haters are being held up at schlong-point, long and short - so sad.

[-] 1 points by Shule (2638) 8 years ago

Sanders vs Trump. That would be a debate I'd look forward to. I've watched Trump and one must admit, at talking he is good; real good. I've also seen Bernie cut loose. When unscripted he can sling words as good as Trump. As I see it, viper tongues being equal, it comes down to philosophy. The Ying and yang of American social-politico will meet in the ultimate grudge match. Bernie the socialist vs Trump the capitalist. Who wins I don't know, but I'd love to have a ring side seat.

[-] 0 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 8 years ago

haHAAA = Crisp Crispie drops out of GOP race. WTF took so long? Will He now go back and soothe his soul with some highway shutdowns?

[-] 4 points by Viking (417) 8 years ago

And now Christie can get his "mop" out and try cleaning up New Jersey!

[-] 2 points by grapes (5232) 8 years ago

Absolutely. Any raising of presidential campaign funding through harassment bribes can stop. Bridgegate happened due to Chris Christie's instigating an overly partisan political culture in his cronies to squeeze political support from constituents. There is an ethical and fiduciary line that must never be crossed by those exercising power - political resentments and governance don't mix.

[-] 0 points by factsrfun (8310) from Phoenix, AZ 8 years ago

bye bye Bush, I will miss Jeb! I think people are assuming trump too soon i think Rubio could still pull it off and him and Niki Hartly would be a tough ticket....

[-] 1 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 8 years ago

I don't know - tRump should be everything the average working person hates - but then again he isn't a professional politician that has been driving their faces into the mud for decades either.

Sanity would suggest that every sane individual ran as fast as they can away from anything that has to do with the GOP - but - there we go again - for some awful reason many are not - though many have and so what is left are some pretty sick individuals - note the haters just glowing in their glory.

Ordinarily I would say that none of em has a snowballs chance in hell of getting into the presidency. But then we got wealthy catering to wealthy establishment politics to smack down on the dem side and Bernie can't do it by himself no matter how much the public likes him there have got to be plenty of others in office to support him and the people. But if the dem establishment has it's way Bernie will not get the nomination and a whole hell of a lot of people that would have shown up for Bernie are likely to opt out in pure disgust rather than vote for establishment HRC.

F'n ugly UGLY mess!

Pray for a good showing for Bernie in SC on the 27th - he needs a win to slap down the establishment toadies as well as the corp(se)oRAT media!

Furthermore: ''And — get this — polls also show Bernie trouncing The Donald if they face each other in November’s presidential showdown. So surely he’s getting a proportional level of media coverage by the networks on our public airwaves, right?

''Ha - just kidding! The big networks’ devotion of 234 minutes to all-things-Trump was “balanced” by less than 10 minutes for Sanders. Most egregious was ABC, the Disney-owned network. ABC’s World News Tonight awarded 81 minutes of national showtime to Trump last year — and for Bernie: 20 seconds.''
