Here is a link to a well-written, thoroughly researched, an mostly unbiased article on the history of American police tactics used to disperse protests. It explains why modern American policemen use military style riot gear and violent tactics such as pepper spraying peaceful protesters. It compares different tactics used by the American police throughout US history. It's interesting and well worth the read.
