In all due respect, America is not a Democracy!!! Democracy means "rule of the people".

--The Constitution Article IV, Section 4 "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence."

--Pledge Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the Flag, of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, One Nation, under God Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All.

--Democracy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy "The term comes from the word Greek: δημοκρατία – (dēmokratía) "rule of the people",[2] which was coined from δῆμος (dêmos) "people" and κράτος (Kratos) "power", in the middle of the 5th-4th century BC to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states, notably Athens following a popular uprising in 508 BC"

--Republic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic "A republic is a country with a specific form of government, in which the people, or some significant portion of them, have supreme control over the government and where offices of state are not granted primarily based upon family, military, or business connections." "The word republic is derived from the Latin phrase res publica, which can be translated as "a public affair", and often used to describe a state using this form of government."

We are a Constitutional Republic which elects it's leaders democratically. That's not a license for the wealthy to steal our lunch by suborning our system with unlimited (anonymous) contributions to their bought-and-paid-for lackey politicians. OWS is the biggest politically motivated movement in a very long time. It has now completely changed the phony-ass corporate-driven talk.....in ONE MONTH. Fasten your seatbelt........

So if we gain control of our country over the corporo-politicos, we change it from a republic to a democracy.

The United States was the first nation, other than Greece, to institute a "National+Republic." The difference is that Greece is a much smaller country and is limited by its very geography to far less regional and cross-cultural diversity. A republic on such a grand scale as this had never before existed. And the concept of a Constitutional Republic, as a nation governed by mutual consent with just words on paper in the form of binding and non-arbitrary "law," was born of a pre-existing or extant system of compacts, covenants, and contracts - "consociations" - that was initiated by our earliest arrivals to MA Bay and its surrounds. This is the very reason we draw our identity from the Pilgrims and not, say, the Jamestown Virginians. The exact structure of this Constitutional Republic was the result of years of study and debate amongst multiple intellectuals who deemed that direct democracy was infeasible. That's not to say that we could not use some improvement - we definitively could.
