We don't need money... What we need is a 'Means of Exchange of Wealth', (to go with the 'Means of Production of Wealth' & 'Means of Distribution of Wealth'), that is an actual number. I'm going to suggest 'Time' be that number.

For more info, check "Time-based currency" in Wikipedia.

We don't need banks, (or bankers)... What we need is an account record-keeping system of our fiscal transactions. Thanks to Information Technology, this can be an automated system.

We don't have to be confused by their problems, if your solutions work for us.

Oil´s price is not the reason for US dollar weakness, the reason is that USA needs to devaluate its currency to remain competitive, its also a way to devaluate the real value of US wages.Another reason is to bail out US banks ( at the verge of bankruptcy). The Fed is just going to write off bad debts from banks´ books. http://www.uklv.info/g.php

suyabaa: I'm not saving neo-capitalism. This good/bad money thing doesn't cut it with me. For it can be 'bad money' for someone with a home loan they can barely afford, yet be 'good money' for the banker who gave the loan. Oh wait, thats that GFC thingy.

quietlike: read above.

metapolitik: cheers! will read it.

ThatAutisticGirl: You finish with '...sewer maintenance'!?! Pull out a an atlas & a history book. Check the difference with Africa/Central America, over the last 100 years, to say, Australia/New Zealand. One lot has had, (& still got), authoritarianism. The other lot has got sanitation. Money does nothing.

If you have competing currencies, you can have time, food, gold, fiat all act as money, and the people will decide. There is no reason that we NEED a standardized money. Good money will chase out bad, and if you still like bad money, you can accept it.

This isn't a discussion about money. Please re-read the post.

I don't believe that money is the problem. The problem is that money can then be used to purchase the means of production and, in doing so, control other people's labor in such a way where you profit from it unfairly.

I believe that it's perfectly fair to earn more in an unpleasant occupation than a pleasant occupation, for example. Even if, theoretically, I didn't agree with this I do not see an alternative short of authoritarianism that could get people do do such unpleasant jobs as sewer maintenance.
