Voter suppression doesn't get much more obvious than this

"Voter ID law to allow Mitt Romney to win Pennsylvania... DONE!" - PA Republican House Leader Mike Turzai

Under a new voter ID law that may primarily affect minorities and elderly Americans, 43 percent of Philadelphia city voters may find themselves ineligible to vote when they try to cast their ballots this November. Data obtained by the Philadelphia City Paper found that 1,636,168 PA voters might not have valid IDs to partake in the 2012 presidential election.

The new law requires voters to show an ID issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, which includes licenses, driver’s permits and state IDs. While the exact number of voters who lack the proper identification to vote is impossible to determine, the number is higher than 9 per cent in PA and 18 per cent in Philadelphia – numbers that the Pennsylvania Secretary of State announced in July. Initially, the state claimed that only 1 per cent lacked valid ID.

“The reality is that thousands more Philadelphians will be impacted by the voter ID law than was originally maintained by the State Department,”said Ellen Kalplan of the Committee of Seventy, which is working towards equipping citizens with valid IDs.“Even taking the lowest possible number, it’s a huge hurdle to overcome.”

Some voters may have inactive PennDOT IDs, or have federal or student identification cards that the state now considers insufficient. Regardless of whether or not they have registered to vote, Pennsylvanians whose licenses have been expired for one year will be ineligible to cast their ballots.

Although state lawmakers claim that the new law would help prevent voter fraud and keep non-citizens from voting, recent court filings show that the state has not investigated or prosecuted a single vote fraud case.

Former President Bill Clinton expressed outrage regarding what he calls vote suppression efforts. “There has never been in my lifetime, since we got rid of the poll tax and all the Jim Crow burdens on voting, the determined effort to limit the franchise that we see today,”he said at a Campus Progress conference in Washington.

Pennsylvania is now facing trial for the controversial voter identification law. Civil and voting rights groups claim that the law discriminates against minority voters, who are less likely to have a valid ID. As a result, the 2012 election could be severely affected by leaving out the votes of such a large percentage of Pennsylvanians.

The state’s law is also under investigation by the US Justice Department, which is analyzing Pennsylvania data to see if those lacking ID are disproportionately African-American or Hispanic.

But the state’s constitution says all elections should be free and equal, and preventing just one person from voting would violate the constitution. Attending Wednesday’s court session was Vivian Applewhite, 92, of Philadelphia. The woman is a regular voter, but does not have a valid photo ID. She was adopted and does not have a birth certificate. She has never had a driver’s license. Four years ago, her purse was stolen with her only copy of her Social Security card. If this law is upheld, Applewhite will be denied her right to vote for the first time since she first voted in 1960.

The federal government is investigating the state to determine if the law violates the Voting Rights Act, passed in 1965 to prohibit rules that make it more difficult for minorities to vote.

Of registered PA voters, 98 per cent believe they have a sufficient ID to vote, and only 35 per cent are aware of the new law. If the law is not deemed unconstitutional or in violation of the Voting Rights Act, more than 1.6 million Pennsylvanians may be shocked to find themselves turned away from voting booths on election day.

On the matter of 'Voter Suppression' and for some insights into who is doing the 'fraud' and how and why, I append a link to a very illuminating if not disturbing documentary film & three other relevant links :

Hey, what happened? You are making sense! RepubliCons are suppressing the Vote again because they can't win without cheating!!

President proposes and Congress disposes: Obama should have asked for more and I believe he did, but Congress only spent what they did to plug the giant gaping hole Republicon Bush left in our economy! Probably the most important thing the stimulus did was save millions of lives (we know you Cons don't give a shit about that) from the devastation of abject poverty and the mutilation of military action conducted on the starving masses attacking the rich!!

People, do you want to get your way from government for a change??? GET OUT THE VOTE!!! Turn out a 90% and watch what happens!!! We will get the government that the 1% is enjoying by design!! Quit being manipulated!! VOTE!!!

[-] 0 points by TrevorMnemonic (5827) 8 years ago

Obama also believes killing American citizens without charge, trial, or evidence is acceptable.

Fuck Romney... but fuck Obama too.

Quit being manipulated by propaganda. Who the TV says to vote for means they're financed by the 1%

The best options usually don't have tv ads flooding the airwaves 24/7

Your incessant "both parties same" whine is nothing but anti-progressive sabotage!!

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good! Cuz we'll get stuck with the really fucking RepubliCon ~ Teabag AWFUL!!!

Get out the Vote! Watch the legislatures!!

or people could just vote for the real progressives. In the 2008 primaries money in politics got the democrats to vote for a pro-war and pro-patriot act democrat over the only democrat running that actually tried to impeach Bush.

In 2012 money in politics created Mitt Romney a pro-war/pro-black water/pro-being terrible and again the same democrat that is pro-war/pro-black water. In my state I am a registered democrat and Obama ran unopposed in the democrat primaries. That was bullshit. Money in politics destroyed the primary process and ever since then whoever has the most money almost always wins. It's bullshit. And you can't deny that.

"or people could just vote for the real progressives."

That's absolutely right and my whole point! People need to Vote!!

We People have the lowest voter turnout in the universe!! Big $ has the greatest! That's what is wrong!! Big $ is getting all the grease, while nitwits are complaining that nothing is going their way!! When We the People are a no-show, what do you EXPECT??

2012 political money didn't "create" Twit, he was just the next feasible hitter on team RepubliCon owned and controlled by Big $. He is simply one of a bevy of loyal puppets, like Bush was. They simply hold a post (the WH in this instance) and do what they're told. The Dem Party (or rogue Dems) rarely does anything that does not harm or hinder itself, but it is standard procedure for political parties to not contest an incumbent, especially one that is doing as well as Obama, despite unprecedented Con sabotage and even treason. Your lack of political experience and knowledge is glaring. And no one could deny that.

Get out the Vote so we can kick out the Cons (from from both parties), then we can repeal CU and establish Instant Runoff Elections, so we can get more radical Progs, Libs, Leftists and even Atheists in our People's government!!!

But the Vote comes first!!!!

[-] -2 points by TrevorMnemonic (5827) 8 years ago

So you disagree with me and agree with me at the same time?

You said "2012 political money didn't "create" Twit, he was just the next feasible hitter on team RepubliCon owned and controlled by Big $"

You said "Get out the Vote so we can kick out the Cons (from from both parties)"

That's my entire point.

So why the argument?

I believe we have saboteurs, agent provocateurs. I also believe this whole bubbleheaded, OWS=Anarchy Not Political Action thing is part of it. Plants inciting infighting and inaction leading into an important election. Reports are out that NY "law enforcement" is monitoring protestors in new ways: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/07/25/us-newyork-occupy-report-idUSBRE86O1PA20120725

"They" want to continue what happened in WI, and repeat 2010!!

What you normally advocate would do this and render OWS impotent!

Are you a Plant??

are you a crazy conspiracy theorist?

[-] -1 points by rpc972 (628) from Portland, OR 8 years ago

Seasoned political analyst/activist/strategist.

Are you a plant or not?

I don't have a problem with mandating people show a State issued ID in order to vote. Voter fraud is rampant with people even voting on behalf of the dead. The fact is there is more then enough time for people to obtain said ID before the election. Those likely to be affected include illegal aliens and law breaking individuals that would vote more then once.

[-] -1 points by TrevorMnemonic (5827) 8 years ago

i don't think you read the link or watched the video

[-] -1 points by commonsense11 (195) 8 years ago

Why don't you tell us how you propose people be identified and their citizenship verified that they are eligible to vote? You can't buy alcohol without a state issued ID so I'm not sure why you think a person should be able to do something as important as voting without a state issued ID. The potential for voter fraud dictates there must be a way to properly identify someone. So please tell me how you propose this be done?

[-] -1 points by TrevorMnemonic (5827) 8 years ago

the 2012 election is incredibly disappointing

Yes! Kill those horrible republicans! Only the democrat party is the true savior of this country!

Are you saying there is no process available that will allow people to obtain photo IDs?
