Admin Notice: The troll problem should be slightly better

Posted 12 years ago on Nov. 15, 2011, 12:43 a.m. EST by jart (1186) from New York, NY

Some people have literally been making a career out of trolling this forum. I took some time to help address this problem. Things should hopefully be at least a little better now.

You're welcome :)

Would you know make the website more user friendly. We all know important articles are hidden be the volume of this site.

Any chance you can make it searchable? Or have sub-forums? Because I have to say this was the worst designed forum I've ever seen.

Yes, thanks for the work you put into this. But I just freaked out myself about a kind of long delay after I made only one post, my first in about 10 hours.

But I think I'd rather wait than have the thread list littered with garbage so thanks again.

[-] 1 points by jart (1186) from New York, NY 12 years ago

No problem <3

I'm going to add a notice to the thread post thingy so people don't accidentally waste their posting privileges on worthless threads.

Thank you kind sir!

The trolls are relentless.

We need a movement with a quickness

You are the witness of change

And to counteract

We gotta take the power back!!

The 5 minute comment wait time is a bit much though. Maybe 2 minutes for fast readers? The long wait time has me skipping the comment section and I feel this blocks communication.

It's Ms and I changed the comment thing to 2 mins. The most important changes is the three hour limit on posting threads and my ruthless censorship of trolls as well as...

OH SHIT we're being evicted.

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

at this points, raids are like cutting heads off a hydra

stay safe

You're getting evicted? Make your move and plead the 5th because you can't plead the first. I feel so horrible for the brutality against protesters, as well as the "segregation" like feel put on the OWS crowd by some people who oppose. Which is weird. I don't know why more people care about the movement over the problems in America. I just want to tell all the trolls, if everything is really so great go make a sign that says "our government is perfect and I love inequality" and see how many people join you.

Good luck. I hope you're not really getting evicted.

Thanks.

The posting delay is a good idea but 4 minutes is a little long IMO. Just trying to respond to 5 notifications now takes +20 minutes. I just said screw it after waiting forever and gave up on a couple.

~sigh~ And now I had to wait again to post this. ; ) lol

[-] 1 points by jart (1186) from New York, NY 12 years ago

Ok I'll turn that down to 2 mins and see if the other stuff I changed solves the problem.

Please stay safe.

Maybe a better way might be to trigger the timer after N posts within some period of time. And/or have a separate timer for new threads versus posts within a thread. The reason being that the straight timer without some conditions makes it very difficult to have a conversation going back and forth with anyone within a thread.

Also what might be helpful along with the "↥like ↧dislike reply permalink" markers is a "spam" flag. After N flags, it gets dumped. Similar to the collapse that you do now after N dislikes but with a higher setting.

You're correct. I'll do that soon enough.

I'd rather have a report button. Comments collapse after the comment reaches -4

Whichever works on your end better. Don't know how much time you guys have to review things versus auto-dump.

Anyway, looks like you've got your hands full with more important stuff at the moment. lol Good luck!
