Forum Post: A New Political Party: OWS & The Tea Party... Together at last... (A match made in heaven!)

HOW'S THIS FOR THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX... JUST THINKING OUT LOUD HERE....

As the Tea Party and OWS are both grassroots movements that actually have many common interests albeit with extremely different viewpoints. They both are movements of the PEOPLE!

What if OWS and the Tea Party were to come together and unite on issues of common interest!? What better example of unity and what America is truly about than to have two polar opposite movements come together for the common good on the most important issues of the country; while all the while acknowledging our extreme differences, but at the same time showing Congress and the world how opposites can work together for the common good of the masses...

THE TWO MOVEMENTS TOGETHER WOULD ACCOUNT FOR A LARGE SEGMENT OF THE POPULATION AND COULD POSSIBLY YIELD POLITICAL FORCE.

Just like the traditional politic parties, the party would have a Conservative and Liberal faction. The movements could come together with the Tea Party representing the Right Wing of the party and OWS forming the Left Wing of the party, but both representing the PEOPLE of the UNITED States of America... The new party name? The TPOWS Party (Pronounced T-Pows). ! Any thoughts?

this would be a real danger to the corrupt establishment in Washington, however the danger I sense is that the Tea party has been largely hijacked by the corporations.

I agree about the dimwitted nature of some of the TP crowd. The TP movement has also been hijacked by the Republican Party for their own benefit.

However, if OWS formed a rock solid agenda of a few simple platform items with a few key issues of agreement, and then openly invited and welcomed TP members who are in agreement with those specific issues, I think inroads could be made. Regardless of whether the TP movement has been hijacked, there are many moderate voices in the TP movement that have been drowned out by the media's need to create an extreme story. Toothless illiterates do not represent the entire TP movement.

It's all in how it is marketed and presented to TP members and the media. In short, it's not about any political party label, name, and whether it's called a left or right ring movement, etc... Focus should be maintained on the issues at hand that both movements want to solve and NOT the differences of each party.

We already have quite a few TP members. However the current TP we do not want to be associated with because it was completely co-opted by politicians for personal political gain. However, We regularly get former TP members join this movement, most in the hopes,as they have told me, it doesnt get co-opt too.

The tea party was never a grass roots movement. It was started with cororate dollars to push a corporate agenda, and the followers were basically just duped into going along. Sorry to say this but that's just the truth of the matter.

This is very interesting indeed. If you read MikeK's post, his short list of items is not altogether different from what many core tea party members believe. I think you could be on to something here, however, I think the big challenge would be that both groups (at least from the perspective of an outside observer) appear to be dominated by a subset who are both die-hard and totally unrealistic. How to get them on board?

Interesting, it's something to talk about and consider anyway.

I posted this days ago. The differences are too far apart.

There's one thing about a religious nut that the TP will tolerate in their party.

But its like Lennon said, "When you go about showing off pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain;t gonna make with anyone anyhow!

Leave your loons at home, so will the TP and the rest of the GOP and DEMS will follow.

Only problem is your so called movement is in fact radical left wing.

prome me wrong!

I've been talking to people in the Tea Party and emailing prominent figures in their organization. Where have you been? ;)

Great! Keep it up!

True the tea party is already in bed with corporate republicans

[-] 1 points by OpenSky (217) 12 years ago

This is possibly the most disastrous thing OWS could do. Look where the funding for the tea party comes from, look at who supports it, look at how republicans treat it! There is WAY too much influence by the corporations in the Tea Party. Our movement wants to get away from corporate power.

Yes, there will be multiple differences in the mindsets, funding sources, platforms, etc, that will never be changed... However, this is the beauty of combining the two movements.

The point of TPOWS Party would not be to try and win over, change, or homogenize with the other side. The focus is to come together on common issues in which both sides agree.

The media is so busy highlighting the differences of everyone and everything, but if you look at the core issues of each movement, they both essentially boil down to giving both movements a voice to the people; which is what government is suppose to safeguard.

Who cares about their funding? We need to build bridges with their membership. We're all interested in the same basic cause of ending corruption and corporate bribes in our government.

If you reject people from the Tea Party then you've already lost. We need to be as inclusive as possible, otherwise our will just end up fighting amongst themselves and nothing will be accomplished.

Imagine if the Protestants and Catholics united on common goals in Ireland early on. So much bloodshed would have been spared.

I'm sorry, I've seen the tea party rallies. They scare me. They remind me of the wild mobs of the old south. Not to say that there aren't rational thinkers in the tea party... It's just that the "fringe" elements are VERY loud.

[-] 1 points by imrational (527) 12 years ago

and that differs from here HOW? ;)

[-] 1 points by OpenSky (217) 12 years ago

46% (in a recent poll) of Tea Partiers still think that Obama wasn't born in the US. That in and of itself speaks volumes.

[-] 1 points by imrational (527) 12 years ago

ouch.

Regardless, we still need their support for now.

[-] 1 points by ComplexMissy (291) 12 years ago

But that means that the majority don't think that. Maybe this is an idea to keep batting around....
